Domain Change Post Mortem
-
Hello, my company changed our domain 2 weeks ago and we are just starting to see traffic level back out, except for Organic.
The site is on shopify so it made switching the domain pretty easy, as well as the 301 redirects (no url structure changes). We've taken all the proper steps with google/bing webmaster tools as well as monitoring 404's and 301 testing and don't see any red flags.
Does anyone roughly know how long it takes for 301's to re-index and domain authority to start building back up for our new domain? Our old domain was about 13 years old and the new one was parked for quite awhile.
p.s. I also noticed a lot of our traffic ending up as referral from our old url. I was able to wipe the sessions from analytics which cut it down, but will this persist for the foreseeable future?
Thanks!

This was pretty spot on, we've seen nearly everything come back up to normal levels now. Traffic Source #'s are still a little messed up, but certainly due to all the redirects.

2-3 weeks sounds right.. depends on how many pages you have. the old site is probably still ranking in serps and then redirecting (referral traffic) to the new domain.
once new domain replaces old in serps, the organic should go up and referral go down.

Changes to cookies, August 24 or 25? (organic search not being cookied?)
Hi folks. We've seen a precipitous change in the referral data that we're able to gather from cookies. Specifically: On August 24 or 25, traffic to our site that was cookied as coming from organic search dropped by ~25%, and traffic coming in with no referrer data at all (i.e., it appears to be "direct") rose by roughly the same amount. As far as we can see, we haven't changed anything in our systems that would have caused this (we're not just mis-reading the cookie info), so I'm looking for external reasons. Has anyone else seen this? Or have any ideas why it would happen?

GWT Change of Address not working
I work at a .jsp site where we have vanity urls that 301 to the www,domainname.com/index.jsp?c_id. Now when I do a change of address in GWT it tells me that it can't fulfill the change of address cause the redirect goes to www.domainname.com/index.jsp instead of www.domainname.com. I could create a GWT account for www.domainname.com/index.jsp/ but that is a 404 (it needs the c_id). How would I do my change of address?

E Commerce and cross domain tracking on universal analytics?
Hi Mozzers, I am running into an issue where my client's website ( can refer to domain.com) uses a third party checkout site called rezovation that we can refer to checkout.rezovation.com: I went through this doc here https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/cross-domain and https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/ecommerce (for universal analytics) and I still find it confusing so here are my questions: According to my understanding I need a customized GATC to link both domains checkout.rezovation.com and domain.com? If yes(above), do we setup one customized GATC for cross domain tracking on all pages from checkout.rezovation.com and domain.com? if it is the case can someone provide detail steps on how to set it up ( I am not a coder so the easier the guideline, the better) Once cross domain tracking is set up, e commerce tracking code should be only on thank you page should be looking like the image below? Should i add manually all the extra code for the ecommerce tracking code or I can get it done via a third party website? Thank you guys! oPgn8P4.png

We have detected that the root domain is not a live URL.
I'm trying to add a URL that is having some obvious issues so I can further investigate. When trying to add this site to a campaign in SEOmoz i get the following: Roger has detected a problem: We have detected that the root domain theurbandater.com is not a live URL. Using this domain, we will be unable to crawl your site or present accurate SERP information. == What does that error mean? Where should I be looking to begin troubleshooting? The initial issue was that back on 9/1 according to Google Webmaster Tools this site began getting a high number of 500 erros and that number continued to rise up to 3200 of the same type of error. So something screwy is going on and I'm not sure where to start looking.

URL-structure change - former long-tail traffic gone
Hey people, I'm sure many of you applied changes to the URL structure of a client's or your own website before. So did I for obvious reason: The structure before was like www.domain.com/brand_page/_22-key-word-translatedkeyword.php (ranked 20). This was changed to www.domain.com/key-word.html.

Edit: Also on-page it was optimized, but only taking out worthless links like "keyword-link to other page" and adding a relevant SEO text (also valuable for the user) Now, for the targeted short-tail keyword, the outcome was great - ranking increased by 17 landing the page on the first SERP. But: Before this page garnered a wide range of long-tail keyword traffic.To be exact: 2600 different keywords generated traffic for that page in a period of 1 month. Now the newly structured site (also on-page optimized) only receives traffic from around 100 keywords. You can imagine that the absolute amount of visits also dropped. So I'd like to know if you observed similar results. Another question that's coming up in this context: How regularly does Google refresh the keywords associated with a page? Like: Is this page really relevant for this one keyword we associated it with 5 years ago? Because it is clear, when I'm looking at the aforementioned 2600 KW in detail, most don't have anything to do with the site, i.e. are not mentioned at all. Still they generated valuable traffic though. All of this is really crucial to this project, because soon the whole website's supposed to be relaunched with optimized URL structure and of course everything else that's need SEO wise... I'd love to hear your experiences. Thanks!!0 -
Google Analtyics Cross Domain Tracking - in a form
I have a 3rd party booking engine that is causing my own domain to show up as a top referreral in google analytics. The vendor is on my very last nerve 🙂 So they're not helping. Would anyone be interested in helping a newbie out with a frustrating problem? Code: Reservations Page - function SubmitReservationForm() {. . . .

pageTracker._link(ResLink);
return true;
} On Every page: Any thoughts would be appreciated! I believe the problem is pageTracker._link(ResLink); but I'm clueless on fixing it.1
