Is there a sweet spot for compressing images for load speed?
-
i am looking to improve the load speed on my site (it's very poor at the moment) but I am trying to figure out how much I should compress the images on my page by. Is there a sweet spot between making the images as small as possible without losing image quality. I know that this might differ depending on a number of factors by any advice would be very helpful. Thanks

I cannot speak to a 'sweet spot' specifically but I would recommend Google's Pagespeed Insights tool for this, you can export optimized/compressed images (as well as CSS and Javascript files) for the page you are analyzing.
I've used this method for many clients and have seen improvements in page load time and have never noticed a difference in image quality.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Doing it in bulk, I would use: http://nikkhokkho.sourceforge.net/static.php?page=FileOptimizer
Unless you're on wordpress, where I would use something like https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/ or https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/wp-smushit/
On most of these, you can select "Lossless" or "Lossy". One doesn't lose any quality of the image and lossy loses slight image quality.

Agree with George above. Also http://pixlr.com/editor/ is a great free tool for compressing images. To answer your question of a "sweet spot", you want to compress them as much as possible while still looking ok on your website. You may just have to test out uploading it on your website and make sure it looks good as a header image is going to be different from a logo image, etc.

I use https://tinypng.com/ it is a great tool for image compression.
alternatively I would use CTR+ALT+SHIFT+S on photoshop to save as png/jpeg for web. It does a hell of a compression (no quality damage).

Do the clickable images on pages are bad that they will increase bounce rate and distract users?
Hi Moz community, I'm trying to get some helpful answers on this. We are planning to employ clickable images on our website pages which opens in new tab if users click on them. This is to make sure that they can see the large screenshots of our product. I wonder will this increase the bounce rate and drop the rankings. Please share your experience and guidance on this. Thanks

Should I link from an optimised product image to the product page from a blog post?
If I am writing a blog post about a product, or a number of products, and I'm including optimised images of the product, should I link from the images to the product page in the shop? Usually I remove links from images as they lead visitors to a simple image page but could it be worth linking from an optimised image to a product? Thanks in advance.

Google Merchant/ Googlebase Images at top of SERPS
Hi We are based in the UK and the new merchant rules have recently been applied here. We offer free shipping but now most of our click throughs come from the images at the top of the SERPS that simply give an image and a price. The prices do not include shipping and there's no indication to the user that shipping is included. Hence our conversion rate from PPC is way down. Is there any way to counter this or do we just need to go back to charging for shipping? Thanks!

Page Speed & SERPS
What impact does page speed have on rankings in the search engine? If I have a Site that is heavy with Pictures, Onsite videos and various scripts that would ultimately be of good use to a viewer but takes time to load. VS A Site that has pictures that are fully optimized for the web or eliminated to save on load time, Videos that are hosted on Sites like VIMEO or You Tube and eliminate scripts where possible and use css3. Note the site loads faster and is better for mobil but doesn't have the same feel of the first site but is useful to the user. Now let's say that both sites are virtual twins in terms of their link profile, age, content quality, location and citations. Will one rank better because of load time? It's the quest for creating the ultimate site for users while delivering it within the fastest time possible.

Image hosting, afraid it will be viewed as doorway
I take lots of picture of product on my fancy new (well, used) dslr camera. My ecommerce platform charges by the amount of data transfer, so I want to host the full-size images on another site. So if Example.com is my e-commerce site full of 400px-wide images, I'm thinking of using Example.net as a sister site to store the 2400px by 3200px pictures, avoiding giant overage charges from volusion. Is there any likelihood of Google viewing this as a doorway or mirror or anything bad? Thanks for your thoughts and time.

How to improve Time to First Byte? Page Load Speed
I am working with a ecommerce site that is having major issues with their load speed. The ttfb is...wait for it...7911 ms. I am not even sure where to start with this issue. If you have any recommendations, it would be appreciated. Is it the clients servers that are slow? They have went through multiple redesigns and have some code that could probably be deleted but I don't think it would make it that slow.
