Need advice on internal links
-
I run a couple of gadget/technology based blogs, which essentially has news based articles and long form articles such as reviews, tutorials, and tips. Looking for some advice on the strategy for internal links:
We have been using internal links in the following ways in articles so far:
- Links to the category pages at the end of the article (we call it related topics)
- Links to category pages wherever relevant preferably in the first paragraph. The logic here was that if we can add the link to a category in the first paragraph, which appears on the home page and category page, it will pass the link juice to the category page.
- Link to relevant articles, mostly by using the full title of the post as we thought that it stands out.
Issues with the current strategy:
-
In the case of the 1st strategy, it doesn't seem that natural, so we are not sure if people actually end up clicking them.
-
In case of the 2nd, we have couple of concerns:
-
it could result in linking to a category page twice. One within the article, and the second at the end of the article because of strategy 1.
-
Because the first paragraph also appears on the category pages, it would mean that in some cases we will be linking to the same category page (recursive).
-
In the case of the 3rd strategy, the problem is it does not appear natural so we are sure if it increases the value of the content.
I was wondering if we should adopt the following strategy:
- Get rid of category links at the end of the article.
- Avoid linking to the category pages in the first paragraph, instead link to the category pages after the first paragraph, so we don't end up with the issue mentioned in b. i. Alternatively, we could remove the excerpts from the category pages so we don't hit the issue of linking to the category page from the category page.
- Add links more naturally. So have a sentence which talks about the related article and link to it using partial match (keyword phrase) or exact match.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi James,
Thanks for the response. I am looking for the best practices. Actually, I was thinking of adopting strategy mentioned towards the end of the article, which includes 1 and 2 as well.

Advice on how to handle Guest Blogging between multiple brands
How to you manage your guest blogging efforts between companies. I blog for 4 different companies, and just started….I am confused if I should blog as myself, or should each company have an "author" set up, and then guest blog under each author? I want their website to get better rankings, and the brand to get more engagement. I am not concerned about myself and my authorship rating….but should I be? Would that be more beneficial to have all blogs tied to me, to help with engagement. Or am I shooting myself in the foot by not increasing my authorship. What's more important? Authorship or blogging about the relevant content from the author that makes the most sense? Just looking for tips from anyone that has to blog under different brands. How do you do it?!?! (also, looking into myguestblog plugin)

I need to hire writers.
Hi, I have a lot of websites that I am currently developing. Does anybody know of a website to find writers that are for hire. For example, I have websites that are focused on home related content, websites focused on the printing industry, websites focused on bugs...etc. Is there a website that I can post or hire writers that have various focuses and expertise? Any information or advice with this will be appreciated. Sincerely, Garret

SEO advice needed regarding Bookmark Sites
Hi all We have recently employed a SEO company. They have written some blogs and promoted the blogs on up to 20 bookmark sites. On each bookmark site the text is the same. Will Google class this as duplicate content? Is this a good idea? Any advise would be appreciated, thanks.

Blog and keyword advice
Hi, i am going to add a blog to my site to encourage more visitors as well as encourage google to visit the site more often but i am concerned on a couple of things. The blogs will be on weight loss hypnotherapy, anger management therapy and also gastric band hypnotherapy and i am concerned that by writing a number of articles on this topic that by using the keywords it will lower my rankings for the following keywords, gastric band hypnotherapy, anger management therapy, weight loss hypnotherapy. To help you understand more, i have three sections which are gastric band hypnotherapy, anger management therapy, weight loss hypnotherapy, which rank well with google and i am worried that if i write about these subjects in my blog that it will reduce my rankings. Should i reduce the number of times i use the word gastric band hypnotherapy in my new blog articles and say only say the word once or twice so google does not thing that is my main page on the subject. any help would be great.

Need help deciding how to display directory listings in way Google will like best
My blog site currently has maybe 100 posts and I do about 7-8 new a week. I am creating a directory for an this site, which will end up eventually being a few hundred or more entries eventually. In the directory browse/search listing, each directory listing will have a title and a short description (one or two lines) and will show about 10-20 per page. And then the user can click an entry to see more details for the particular directory listing. This is where I have a choice, and I want to know what is the best for my site, in Google's eyes of course. Options: 1. The listing detail is displayed on a separate page. 2. The listing detail is displayed below the entry that was clicked, on the same page, by use of jquery to slide down the other content blow it to make room for it. (It actually looks slick, I've tried it). If I were writing full, unique pages for each listing detail, I'd choose option #1. But the vendors are submitting the content. It's possible they might just copy and paste their site's About page into it, or they might not even add any more detail other than their address. I can't control it. So, if going with option #1, let's say a third of the vendors add nice unique content, a third paste in some dup content, and a third just leave it blank (there would still be an address, couple line short description, and a title on the page). Would this situation be good, not good or neutral for my site? I'm not sure if adding additional pages, maybe half to two-thirds of which could be somewhat duped or of minimal word length would be bad or neutral for my site overall. As for my existing and ongoing blog pages--they are all unique, long and Google seems to love them.

2,500 Word blog post? What's your advice?
Most of my blog posts end up being 400-600 words, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have written one that is 2,500 words this time. If it were you, would you make one huge post, or split it into two or three? Or would you say it wholly depends on my site and the type of content? As far as link bait goes, one page is better . . . I guess. But would anyone ever read a 2,500 word blog post, even it it's about a subject he/she is interested in? Additionally, what's better for SEO? Just wants some second opinions. Thanks!

Should You Allow Off-Topic Links in Guest Posts
Hi Mozzers! Suppose you accept guest posts on your blog about marketing and a guest blogger wants to use the anchor text "outdoor clothing" in their bio. Is there a risk to my blog if I allow off-topic links in guest posts? Is there a risk that Google would consider guest post links as paid and apply a penalty? Thanks!

How important is linking out to relevant, authoritative sites?
As I write blog articles for my site I often come across a situation where I'm quoting something from another site, or using a piece of data from that other site to make a point. I know it's nice and courteous to link to the source when I do this but from a pure SEO point of view, does it matter? Is there any benefit to linking from my site to other sites that are related and authoritative on the subject I'm discussing? I know I'll bleed off a little link juice to that external site that would otherwise go towards my internal links on the same page, but are there other benefits to linking out to known good sites? Is that any kind of signal to Google that I'm playing in a good neighborhood?
