How will canonicalizing an https page affect the SERP-ranked http version of that page?
-
Hey guys,
Until recently, my site has been serving traffic over both http and https depending on the user request. Because I only want to serve traffic over https, I've begun redirecting http traffic to https.
Reviewing my SEO performance in Moz, I see that for some search terms, an http page shows up on the SERP, and for other search terms, an https page shows. (There aren't really any duplicate pages, just the same pages being served on either http or https.)
My question is about canonical tags in this context. Suppose I canonicalize the https version of a page which is already ranked on the SERP as http. Will the link juice from the SERP-ranked http version of that page immediately flow to the now-canonical https version? Will the https version of the page immediately replace the http version on the SERP, with the same ranking?
Thank you for your time!

"I have the option of choosing either www.example.com or example.com, but no option for https://www.example.com or https://example.com."
Go in to the https & pick the same format use what ever your site retain the www. if you had it drop it if you did not.
"I have Search Console verified for both HTTP and https pages"
- On the Search Console Home page, click the site you want.
- Click the gear icon, and then click Site Settings.
- In the Preferred domain section, select the option you want.
Nice! So you have 4 URLs? pick the same format as you had but from # 3 or 4 below.
- HTTP://
- HTTP://www.
- HTTPS:// if you did NOT have www use this
- HTTPS://www. if you had www use this

**Next, **
Make certain that you force https:// on your hosting environment or WAF/CDN
**Check it using a **Redirect mapper

Add HSTS once everything is definitely working.
Make sure everything is working correctly before Google crawls it use
all the best,

Thanks, Thomas. This is a comprehensive and clear answer. Your help is much appreciated.
I have a question about Search Console. In the Moz question you linked to, the instructions given are to go to Search Console > Site Settings and to choose the preferred domain.
In Search Console I can find Site Settings, and I see that you can set a preferred domain. However, in the Site Settings for both the http and https sites, I have the option of choosing either www.example.com or example.com, but no option for https://www.example.com or https://example.com. I have Search Console verified for both http and https pages.
Do you have insight on this issue?
The htaccess file has been updated. My plan is to add self-referencing canonical tags to https, http > https canonical tags, and 301 redirects, in addition to Search Console changes. Have I missed anything?
Thank you again!

Yes, it will as long as you set it in Google Webmaster tools and create the proper 301 redirects please look at this reply.
Okay you have been creating duplicate content for Google I would decide to use HTTPS and point your self-referencing canonical as well as your 301 redirect to HTTPS
you need to correct everything in Webmaster tools/Google search console these things are essential in order to maintain your traffic. Please look at my post here and make sure your canonical is self referencing to HTTPS://

<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]</ifmodule>here is an updated article on using HTTPS the browsers alone are forcing people to do it.

Does having a different sub domain for your Landing Page and Blog affect your overall SEO benefits and Ranking?
We have a domain www.spintadigital.com that is hosted with dreamhost and we also have a seperate subdomain blog.spintadigital.com which is hosted in the Ghost platform and we are also using Unbounce landing pages with the sub domain get.spintadigital.com. I wanted to know whether having subdomain like this would affect the traffic metric and ineffect affect the SEO and Rankings of our site. I think it does not affect the increase in domain authority, but in places like similar web i get different traffic metrics for the different domains. As far as i can see in many of the metrics these are considered as seperate websites. We are currently concentrating more on our blogs and wanted to make sure that it does help in the overall domain. We do not have the bandwidth to promote three different websites, and hence need the community's help to understand what is the best option to take this forward.

HTTP Pages Indexed as HTTPS
My site used to be entirely HTTPS. I switched months ago so that all links in the pages that the public has access to are now http only. But I see now that when I do a site:www.qjamba.com, the results include many pages with https in the beginning (including the home page!), which is not what I want. I can redirect to http but that doesn't remove https from the indexing, right? Weird Page switch for a keyword in Google Rankings
Over this past weekend Google switched the page which usually showed in search results for keyword benchmarking. It went from from http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking to http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking-portal/osb. Also on Google the Rankings for the keyword 'benchmarking' sank from 15 to 47 for http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking Just looking for some theories or ideas or anyone that has had this happen to them.

Updated Wordpress version and installed SEO plugin, ranking went down
Last week, we updated our Wordpress version to the most recent version, and installed the SEO plugin. Our rankings immediately went down from #9 to #19. Is this normal? Will our rankings improve once the search engines crawl our site in the next couple weeks? Any feedback is helpful!

Home Page Got Indexed as httpS and Rankings Went Down.
Hello fellow SEO's About 3 weeks ago all of a sudden the home page on our Magento based website went down in rankings (from top 10 to page 3-4 Google) and was showing as httpS - instead of usual http. It first happened with just a few keywords and a week later any search phrase was returning the httpS result for the home page. When I view cache for the home page now it (both http and httpS versions) it gives me this http://clip2net.com/s/2OtPS We are not blocking anything in robots.txt Robots tags are set to index, follow There are hardly any external links pointing at the home pages as httpS This only affected the home page - all other pages rank where they used to and appear as http Has anybody ever had a similar problem? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and help

Multiple Versions of Pages on One Website
Hi! My name is Sarah and I work for a brand design firm in Los Angeles. Currently we're working on a website redesign for our company. We have three pages of content that we want to add to the site, but are unsure if we will get penalized by Google if we add all of them since they may come off as too similar? The pages are: Branding

Personal Branding
Corporate Branding Does anyone know if our SEO will be penalized for having all three of these pages separately, or should we just focus on Branding, and include Personal Branding and Corporate Branding as sub categories on the page? Thanks! Sarah P.S. I should also say, we will have more than just the three aforementioned pages. It's going to be a big site with around 200+ pages. (Half of them being services, which is where the Branding, PB and CB pages will be located.)0 -
Why do SERP Results ( Rankings ) differ from country to country ?
Hi, I have been doing seo for this client based in Sri lanka for almost 8 months now. Since we started SEO we had set up geographic target setting to UK through google webmaster tools. At the moment Site is completely ranking higher on google uk & other countries except Sri Lanka . On Google.lk site doesn't even come within 1st 5 pages for keywords which are ranked on1st page in other countries ? What do you think about this ? How does it happen ?

Additional Pages in SERP
Hi Mozers, Can anybody help me with this. For "keyword phrase" SERP looks like this: 1. keyword.com/page1 2. keyword.com/page2 3. Mysite.com/page1 4. mysite.com/page2 ... 13. Mysite.com/page3 14. Mysite.com/page4 Is it possible to include Mysite.com/page3-4 both to the top 4th-5th, or better merge this pages and promote only one? Thanks.
