Number of internal links and passing 'link juice' down to key pages.
-
Howdy Moz friends.
I've just been checking out this post on Moz from 2011 and wanted to know how relevant it is today?
I'm particularly interested in a number of links we have on our HP potentially harming important landing page rankings because not enough 'link juice is getting to them i.e) are they are being diluted by all the many other links on the page? (deeper pages, faqs, etc etc)
It seems strange to me that as Google as has got more sophisticated this would still be that relevant (thus the reason for posting). Anyway, I thought I was definitely worth asking. If we can leverage more out of our on-page efforts then great

Hi Issac,
To your 1st point:
"Google says it does not use GA as a way of measuring user behavior. Regarding GA, do you just mean we should use it provide **us **insight that Google will 'pick up' in others ways?"
Yes, this is a more succinct way of putting it. While GA metrics are not the be-all, end-all of algorithmic rankings, they do go a long way in explaining why certain sites/pages/content outperform others in SERP's. I know that improving my "time on page" or "bounce rate" has resulted in higher rankings for various pieces of content I have created, although with so many factors in play it can be hard to narrow it down that far.
To your 2nd point:
That's how I choose to operate. I have found that reducing internal links is a good start when it comes to improving user experience assuming that each link provides value or answers a question. The simplest way I can explain my process is that I sit on a page, look at the links and think,
"If I were one of my customers on this page, what questions/needs would I want answered?"
Based on the answer to that question, I have an idea of how many links I should have on the page. The "magic number" of 100 isn't something I pay attention to, although it is a good place to start - if you have more than 100 questions (see: links) coming from 1 page, you are probably not condensing your pages enough.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Robert. Thank you so much for your detailed response, extremely useful.
A couple of quick clarifications if I may?
Google says it does not use GA as a way of measuring user behavior. Regarding GA, do you just mean we should use it provide **us **insight that Google will 'pick up' in others ways?
Regarding the specific point of diluting 'link-juice'...
So this is still relevent, but make sure we reduce links alongside imporving user experience?

Hi Isaac,
In terms of relevance, this article is still pretty good. As it says, it is oversimplified but the lesson still holds true:
If you have useless links on your pages (i.e. they lead to irrelevant information/pages) and this creates poor user signals (higher drop-off rates, poorer user metrics), then your rankings will suffer.
To be clear, it's not a penalty situation, you just aren't benefiting from your site's content as much as you might if your internal structure were clean, simple and relevant to user queries. E-commerce sites typically struggle with this problem but Amazon still does extremely well with respect to organic rankings because it is a trusted brand.
This leads me to a point I have seen proven with my clients:
Positive user metrics can overcome "issues" that have traditionally plagued on-page SEO. If you can create a good user experience (shown in Analytics through good user metrics) then your link structure is probably pretty good, and having a ton of links on the page is less problematic than if it leads to huge drop-offs because people are getting confused and lost on your site.
A specific point to your question: Diluted links and FAQ's
I'd strongly suggest that you retain FAQ's on sales pages or ranking pages. They answer user questions and require your visitors to jump pages far less frequently while keeping them on-site for longer periods of time, cushioning your metrics. I don't know if this is accurate in your case, but try to consolidate your "info" (i.e. FAQ pages) into your sales/ranking pages to simplify your user experience. This will help you in 3 ways:
- Keep folks on your site longer
- Satisfy their needs
- Reduce the number of internal links on your pages
Hope this helps! If you want clarification or just want to talk shop feel free to reach out!
Cheers,
Rob

Should you do on-page optimization for a page with rel=canonical tag?
If you ad a rel=canonical tag to a page, should you still optimize that page? I'm talking meta description, page title, etc.

Wrong page ranking on SERP, above more relevant page
Often I will see the wrong page, something less relevant to a particular search, appear higher on the SERP than a more relevant page. Why does this happen and how can it be remedied? I found this Moz article, has anything been written on this topic more recently. Thanks! https://moz.com/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions

Product Landing page- Key Words used too often.
Hi There to everyone. I'm very new at SEO so I appreciate all the help I can get! Question: on my e-commerce website, one heading is "USB KEYS", then when you click on that, you get a page full of products with the word "USB KEYS" on the title, such as "4gig black USB KEY".. So then I do the MOZ Page grader and get a low score because on the product landing page it thinks I've used the word "USB KEYS" too much, like 72 times,.. But I have to use it- Cause it has to be in the product title! Is this ok!? thanks

Which pages on my site should I back link to
The majority of the back links I have been creating link directly to our home page and to the store page. Is this the best approach or should I be trying to spread the links throughout our site to include product categories and subcategories etc?

Is reported duplication on the pages or their canonical pages?
There are several sections getting flagged for duplication on one of our sites: http://mysite.com/section-1/?something=X&confirmed=true
On-Page Optimization | | Safelincs
http://mysite.com/section-2/?something=X&confirmed=true
http://mysite.com/section-3/?something=X&confirmed=true Each of the above are showing as having duplicates of the other sections. Indeed, these pages are exactly the same (it's just an SMS confirmation page you enter your code in), however, they all have canonical links back to the section (without the query string), i.e. section-1, section-2 and section-3 respectively. These three sections have unique content and aren't flagged up for duplications themselves, so my questions are: Are the pages with the query strings the duplicates, and if so why are the canonical links being ignored? or Are the canonical pages without the query strings the duplicates, and if so why don't they appear as URLs in their own right in the duplicate content report? I am guessing it's the former, but I can't figure out why it would ignore the canonical links. Any ideas? Thanks0 -
Links to Product pages
Hello all, I am still rather new to SEO and learning a lot every day. I do have a question. On our product search result pages (example http://shop.ferguson.com/search/bathroom-lighting)
On-Page Optimization | | Ferguson
It is currently set up so the image, text, price etc of a product is linking to that product page. Our question is, if we were to link the image and the product name - will this be seen as two links to the same page? Is this a bad thing having multiple links to the same page? I searched around to see how other ecommerce sites have similar pages setup and it seems they link the image and also the product name, and the description is not click-able, which allows a user to "Highlight" the text (this is not possible on ours) Which would be to correct approach for SEO as well as User Interface, the way we have it set up, or by going with the method of the question I asked, Thank you for any information on this! Nofollow on these internal links?
On an x-cart ecommerce website we have, seomoz has picked up a lot of duplicate content, based on URLs that are different, but are essentially the same page. These come from Fitlers, that allow a page to show only certain colours and styles, reordering page by price etc, and also the page 2, page 3 etc of a category: All the below are '4ft-bedding.html' http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?filter=1&value=Pink http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?page=2 http://www.textilesdirect.co.uk/store/4ft-Bedding.html?sort=price&view_all=Y I've now changed all these internal links to rel="nofollow" on the a tag. Is that the correct and best way to sort? I might be mistaken on when I did this update and when the last report was ran, but on the SEOmoz crawling report, it still has the above as problem pages. thanks!

Where does link juice flow on a cloaked link?
Hello, I use a wordpress plug in that allows me to display tot he user any link I want from my domain, so it might be like: www.domain.com/gift-card, but the actual link is www.someaffiliatelink/w09fjai;owfoienw <--- and then a bunch of crap after the domain for the affiliate link. It uses the common technique of an iframe to hide the actual url from the user and show the one that I want them to see. What I am wondering is, does link juice in this case flow to my site, or to their site? And also, do you have any comments regarding this type of link cloaking? Thanks. Thanks
