Should this site be using Rel=Canonical VS No Index
-
I'm currently working on this site
https://www.visitliverpool.com/accommodation
I've been watching this video by Rand - https://moz.com/blog/rel-canonical but it's still unclear in this scenario.
if you use the search facility "check availability" half way down the page the results page (urlparams) are no indexed. Would it be better to index and canonicalise?
There is no similar content but I'm concerned that no index will remove the ability for semantic content to be visible to google.
-
Thanks for this. I will set up the canonicalisation accordingly.
In regards to the internal clicks. I guess I was hoping that all the clicks would essentially be added together. As in - All of the actual page clicks and all the clicks variations with URL parameters.
But as internal clicks are not a ranking factor it doesn't matter.
Are the links to the page with parameters the only way the 'source' page benefits through using a cannnonical?
-
This is a classic case where rel-canonical should be applied. The two URLs are identical except one has had a query string added. By including a self-referential canonical tag on the main URL, it will automatically catch the same URLs with query strings added.
This will help avoid a situation where someone gets to the guest house page via the internal search tool and links to it, but the link is wasted because the page is no-indexed.
As far as internal links - they are reported in Google Search Console in the Search Traffic section and are a general way to assess whether your internal link scheme is appropriately linking to the most important pages, but it doesn't measure clicks.
Internal link clicks are not a ranking factor - but should that matter? You should be optimising them to generate more engagement with your site's content regardless, yea?

Hi Paul
Yes that is most helpful. I have a sub-question. I hope that's ok. You've been very helpful. Please see below.
I've also reposted it here - https://moz.com/community/q/internal-clicks-and-ctr-is-rel-canonical-better-than-noindex-in-this-case

Thanks Paul that's helpful.
I will keep the results no indexed.
When you click one of the results it takes you to a product. But the product also has URL Params and is also no indexed.
The product also exists as this which is indexed
https://www.visitliverpool.com/accommodation/albion-guest-house-p305431
Should I canonicalise is this instance?
Does CTR apply to internal links? i.e. Does search console consider internal clicks? Are internal clicks a ranking factor?
-
Search results pages should pretty well always be no-indexed. Definitely the case in this instance.
Which makes sense if you think about it. What value would there be in a search result in the SERPS for every variation of date, time, number of beds etc? None. And your site would have a literally infinite number of those pages for the search engine to try to index, as every combination of variables creates orders of magnitude of page variations.
So long story short - keep 'em no-indexed.
Hope that helps?
Paul

Should ebook content be a download or hosted on site for SEO?
We have written ebook(s) on subjects of interest to our prospects (B-C market). We have taken many recurring questions asked over the years plus helpful graphics and put into short 12+ page ebooks. After filling out form to receive ebook- (first name & email on form) for any option below- Should we: a) send them to Landing page to download ebook to their desktop? b) send them e-mail with link to download ebook? c) send them directly to page on our site with the ebook content? d) something else? My thoughts are to do c) which will put content on site, though 'protected' via gate. This way the search engines can crawl the content. However, if that content is not directly reachable through menu will that degrade the importance of that content? Obviously we want to provide good, helpful information to prospects. We would also love to benefit from that content from a Search point of view if possible. Anyone have experience with this through A/B test or otherwise? Thanks, Steve

Site Architecture
I came across some good reading on Moz re: how deep your structure should go (ex: how many clicks does it take to get to the bottom.) It's from 2011, but I assume the info still applies today? Successful Site Architecture for SEO [SES London 2011]

Link juice retained when using nofollows?
Is it still true that when linking to other sites with nofollow links, the juice is retained on your page? Or is the juice lost, but just not passed on to the other site? I found this whiteboard friday, but it's pretty old (2007): http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-juice-is-loose Looking forward to your thoughts!

Will the link back to my site be worth building them one for free?
To clarify, I am in the running to be awarded a project by a college in my area. They want to pay NOTHING for me to have my designers and developers build a site for them. If I don't want it several other companies will do it (or so they say). This site will be used to promote an event that is held annually in different major cities around the world. (online registration, pay online, etc) The weird part to me is the governing body of this event has the hosting city build their own website and promote the event on their own so every year they reinvent the wheel with a whole new website (not smart I know). **Is this worth it for me? ** The attendees will be almost exclusively from colleges and all have edu. websites and emails they will be using to register. There will be about 1,000 attendees I do get a link giving my company credit for building the site at the bottom of every page BUT..... I realize any love my site gets from the search engines will be next to nothing, right? (its a BRAND new domain and by the time it start getting any recognition the event will be over and it will be abandoned plus it will be watered down bcs they can tell its a site I built). Is it possible that when one of the attendees tweets or links to the page my site could get a little love? If I impress my contact that is sending me this 'business' I know it will turn into more paying work.............. **Thoughts? Opinion? Is there a silver lining i'm missing? Is this a dumb move? ** Thank you for your time and any response! Matthew

E-Book Versus Whitepaper - Which Term to Use?
So I have read several articles about the use of terms e-books versus whitepapers. Both pros and cons to use for each. Do you have any experience on which has worked better for you - converted more traffic, gotten more interest, etc? Would love to hear your experience on these terms. Thanks.

Some questions on Multilingual sites with domain strategy
hi seomoz addicted, i need your help.... did you see the webinar last friday? i totally agree with randfish,
Whiteboard Friday | | guidoboem
especially when he talks about redirection; To create my multilanguage site i inserted a php redirection on my site homepage that redirects visitors to the right domains. everything it was working fine when i realized that googlebot was no more able to index both sites becouse it was redirected only to one.... i think that i'll create an home page where visitor could select their language and then by setting a cookie that redirects only the returning visitors ... what do you think? I've just one doubt, shall i put this home page on both domain, and what will be the new url adress of my current home page? How the new home page have to look like ( in terms of seo )? i mean there will be only an image and two links for the .com and .it domain, isnn't it? and how to put the cookie for returning visitors? hope to have been clear thanks,

Is submitting a single piece of video content to a lot of different video sites spam?
In the past I have been told that you can use tools like Tube Mogul to auto submit a single piece of video content to lots of different video sites and that it is not considered spam. After watching Rand's Whiteboard Friday I am more skeptical of this tactic. Here are my list of reasons why doing this would and wouldn't be considered spam. This is not spam because: These video sites are individual sites with an individual user base. This is spam because: Google does not want duplicate content of any kind in the SERPs. I leaning towards spam but have seen this be very effective in the local space. So I'm torn.

Why does SEOMoz use Wistia? Why would you not use YouTube as well? Does Vimeo factor into the equation at all?
I am wondering what the best options are for video hosting websites (YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, etc.). Which host has the best interface that you would want to use to embed into your site? Any advice you have in regards to optimizing the videos on our site, then that would be much appreciated. Thanks! And our YouTube channel is here http://www.youtube.com/user/gooverseas
