How do I best optimize my on-page SEO for a magazine-style wordpress theme?

My Wordpress website is set up with a magazine style theme (Newspaper). Maybe that's the issue overall here. Questions:
1) Pages vs Categories vs Posts
I currently have a category with a few dozen posts under it. The category page itself has a ~1000 word article on it. It paginates every 10 posts or so at the bottom, but most of the page is duplicate because it's only swapping out a few links.
Should I instead make the "category" a page with the posts childed under it? What's the best way to go about that?
2) Canonical and Pagination
I get errors about a ton of duplicate content for paginated categories and my author page (all posts are under the admin account, which has ~40 pages or so. Every page is just a list of posts and it bitches about duplicate Titles and Descriptions on every one of the paginated posts). Should I canonical these back to the root author? Same question regarding pagination for categories, assuming I'm not going to be switching them to Pages.
3) Home Page Links
Right now my home page just shows a few links to the top posts of all time. After that, it shows the 5 newest posts. On the sidebar it lists a few random pages/posts. There are also a few "category listings" which just shows random posts relevant to that category. Do I want something more static/structured? The navbar does list most main content pages under their appropriate category, but the home page itself is pretty much dynamic.

Thank you for the response. I ended up disabling pagination on the category pages (as there aren't more than 20-30 posts per category) to fix the duplicate content issues caused by paginating each page 5-10 times with the same 1000 word article on each page.
I then fixed the author page Titles and Description issue by adding some dynamic tags provided by Yoast in the Author page. Simply changing it from "All Posts by (Author) - Site Name" to "All Posts by (Author) - Page 2 of 36 - Site Name" dynamically, it fixed the duplicate titles completely. Same with the meta description..
As for the home page links, I changed the linking structure entirely. Instead of random posts per category, it now has a link to each category page with the 5 most recently added articles per category under them with a link, image, and text snippet so the page will be more "static" for a while and provide some link flow to my new content, but still update as i add content. I then moved the top 5 posts of all time in the sidebar followed by the most trending article from the last 7 days (by view count).
Finally, I customized my 404 page to show the top 3 articles from my top 3 categories after reading an article about keeping your 404 page relevant and helpful to your viewers just in case I have a bad link come in.
I made all of these changes about a week ago and am waiting to see any changes in rankings, but I think, at least from a reader's viewpoint, the site looks much cleaner and easier to navigate. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to just randomly display whatever the theme felt like every refresh.

Best Web-site Structure/ SEO Strategy for an online travel agency?
Dear Experts! I need your help with pointing me in the right direction. So far I have found scattered tips around the Internet but it's hard to make a full picture with all these bits and pieces of information without a professional advice. My primary goal is to understand how I should build my online travel agency web-site’s (https://qualistay.com) structure, so that I target my keywords on correct pages and do not create a duplicate content. In my particular case I have very similar properties in similar locations in Tenerife. Many of them are located in the same villa or apartment complex, thus, it is very hard to come up with the unique description for each of them. Not speaking of amenities and pricing blocks, which are standard and almost identical (I don’t know if Google sees it as a duplicate content). From what I have read so far, it’s better to target archive pages rather than every single property. At the moment my archive pages are: all properties (includes all property types and locations), a page for each location (includes all property types). Does it make sense adding archive pages by property type in addition OR in stead of the location ones if I, for instance, target separate keywords like 'villas costa adeje' and 'apartments costa adeje'? At the moment, the title of the respective archive page "Properties to rent in costa adeje: villas, apartments" in principle targets both keywords... Does using the same keyword in a single property listing cannibalize archive page ranking it is linking back to? Or not, unless Google specifically identifies this as a duplicate content, which one can see in Google Search Console under HTML Improvements and/or archive page has more incoming links than a single property? If targeting only archive pages, how should I optimize them in such a way that they stay user-friendly. I have created (though, not yet fully optimized) descriptions for each archive page just below the main header. But I have them partially hidden (collapsible) using a JS in order to keep visitors’ focus on the properties. I know that Google does not rank hidden content high, at least at the moment, but since there is a new algorithm Mobile First coming up in the near future, they promise not to punish mobile sites for a collapsible content and will use mobile version to rate desktop one. Does this mean I should not worry about hidden content anymore or should I move the descirption to the bottom of the page and make it fully visible? Your feedback will be highly appreciated! Best on-line tool for checking indexed pages (or just for a Mac)
Hey guys, I'm on a Mac and that's why I can't use the usual PC software for checking if my links have been indexed. Here's the deal. I ordered some guest posts. The guest poster did it for me and put my back links. Now, I want to quickly check which pages (with my backlinks) have been indexed. I have a lot of guest posts. So, I need something that can check if those pages have been indexed by Google. I need an online tool or something that will work for my Mac. Help. 🙂

Best way to handle indexed pages you don't want indexed
We've had a lot of pages indexed by google which we didn't want indexed. They relate to a ajax category filter module that works ok for front end customers but under the bonnet google has been following all of the links. I've put a rule in the robots.txt file to stop google from following any dynamic pages (with a ?) and also any ajax pages but the pages are still indexed on google. At the moment there is over 5000 pages which have been indexed which I don't want on there and I'm worried is causing issues with my rankings. Handling 301s: Multiple pages to a single page (consolidation)
Been scouring the interwebs and haven't found much information on redirecting two serparate pages to a single new page. Here is what it boils down to: Let's say a website has two pages, both with good page authority of products that are becoming fazed out. The products, Widget A and Widget B, are still popular search terms, but they are being combined into ONE product, Widget C. While Widget A and Widget B STILL have plenty to do with Widget C, Widget C is now the new page, the main focus page, and the page you want everyone to see and Google to recognize. Now, do I 301 Widget A and Widget B pages to Widget C, ALTHOUGH Widgets A and B previously had nothing to do with one another? (Remember, we want to try and keep some of that authority the two page have had.) OR do we keep Widget A and Widget B pages "alive", take them off the main navigation, and then put a "disclaimer" on the pages announcing they are now part of Widget C and link to Widget C? OR Should Widgets A and B page be canonicalized to Widget C? Again, keep in mind, widgets A and B previously were not similar, but NOW they are and result in Widget C. (If you are confused, we can provide a REAL work example of what we are talkinga about, but decided to not be specific to our industry for this.) Appreciate any and all thoughts on this.
