HTTPS & Redirects
-
Hi
We're moving to https imminently & I wondered if anyone has advice on redirects.
Obviously we'll be redirecting all http versions to https - but should I be checking how many redirects are in each chain and amending accordingly?
If there's 4-5 in a chain, remove the middle unnecessary URLS ?
Advice please

Hi, We are on Magento and moving to https for all URLS soon as well. We have just had them on customer pages, checkout and admin but time to move on.
Interesting to read about those database redirects also. We have thousands in place over years as we've tidied up the catalogue and they get automatically created.A few years back I deleted them on a site upgrade and we seemed to take a knock in rankings... but it could have been the new site source code contributing to this also. Things have settled and we have good seo ... but ive concerns over changing to full https...eekkk.
What htaccess codes did you use to redirect all existing http urls to the https versions?
Was it just something like?RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

The https migration will have the same URLS but I'm trying to tidy up the redirects we currently have
So each time a title is updated on the site, a new redirect is added to the database but the others are not removed.
Shall I just delete from the database? I just want to make sure I'm not deleting those old URLs with authority in the chain
-
Delete those one that do not have content.
Keep in mind that https migration is intended to hace almost the same URLs, only changing http for https.
Cant imagine why having those extra URLs in the middle of the chain. Is there something that Im missing?

I think each time they get a redirect request they just update all the existing URLs in the file.
My question is which ones do I delete? I need to update the first URL & the last & remove the middle but from the file I can't determine which URL was first in the chain...

Try to convince your dev team that those redirects are not needed.
If those middle pages dont exist, why the redirect?I'd settle in max 2 hops, that is 2 redirects. This is just my maximum.
The best for google: 1 redirect.
Max tolerated by google: 4-5. -
Hi
Yes, I am just trying to work out how our dev team manage the redirects.
I'm not sure whether they actually go through a redirect chain.. this is an example of the data pulled from the redirect export:
-
sloping-top-for-ekwo-industrial-1-tier-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers
-
sloping-top-for-industrial-1-tier-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers
-
sloping-top-for-industrial-lockers redirect > sloping-top-for-manutan-industrial-lockers

Hello Becky!
If possible, lower down the number of redirects even though Google understands well up to 4-5 hops. Matt Cutts said it in these videos:
Can too many redirects from a single URL have a negative effect on crawling? Is there a limit to how many 301 (Permanent) redirects I can do on a site?Best Luck.
GR.

Multistore 302 Redirects
I noticed that every link on my site is being flagged up as a 302 temp redirect in Moz. The reason is because we have a multi store and use GeoIP to redirect anyone coming from their respective country. I'm guessing a 302 is the wrong way to do this - can anyone shed advice on the best practice for redirecting customers to geo-specific stores?

Huge httaccess with old 301 redirects. Is it safe to delete all redirects with no traffic in last 2 months?
We have a huge httaccess file over several MB which seems to be the cause for slow server response time. There are lots of 301 redirects related to site migration from 9 months ago where all old URLs were redirected to new URL and also lots of 301 redirects from URL changes accumulated over the last 15 years. Is it safe to delete all 301 redirects which did not receive any traffic in last 2 months ? Or would you apply another criteria for identifying those 301 that can be safely deleted? Any way to get in google analytics or webmaster tools all 301 that received traffic in the last 2 months or any other easy way to identify those, apart from checking the apache log files ?

How long should I keep the 301 redirect file
We've setup an new site and many pages don't exist anymore (clean up done). But for many of them we have new pages with new url's. We've monitored the 404 and have now many URL's redirected with 301 (apache file). How long should we keep this in place? Checking all links manually to see of new url is in place of the old url (in google) is too much work. tx!

301 Redirects?
We have an e-commerce website with about 4500 products for sale. About 1200 of these items were not showing up in the Google PLA ads because they were $0 dollar items, so we made those products invisible. Then Set 301 Redirects for each of the 1200 items. My question is this; we want to turn back on the 1200 items, should we delete the 301 redirects that are in place for them.? Will it hurt SEO performance by having them?

301 Redirecting an Entire Site
I have a question which has had me thinking for hours..... If SITE A is ranking well on a number of search phrases and you 301 that site to another (SITE B). The site will change on the Google SERPs to the site which you've re-directed to... In this case SITE B. But how do you maintain the rankings of SITE A?. Do you keep the rankings of SITE A forever? Or will your rankings of SITE A (now SITE B) gradually slip as other sites rank higher? As you can no longer edit SITE A does Google take into consideration the content on SITE B and no longer take anything that SITE A had to offer into consideration? SITE B has simply replaced it in the SERPs??...... Please can anybody help? Thanks,
