Temporary Domain Changes
-
Hi All,
Our development team needs to do a temporary site name change from www.sitename.com to new.sitename.com and then wants to return to www.sitename.com. They need to do this for the whole site due to how it's built with single sign on (SSO) and how certain post login pages utilize pre login pages and need to keep people logged in. This process is changing with a CMS upgrade and website and post login pages will be independent of the pre login pages moving forward.
My question is what is the best way to manage this transition? Right now it seems like the best solution I've been able to work out with development is to reduce the domain shift down to one week and use 302 Redirects, don't index the new.sitename.com site, and for that week and take my lumps as they come from search. Looking for any other suggestion that may help marketing work with dev without casting blame on any teams for drops in organic traffic.

Hi everyone
I'm in the same boat too. If either Tim or Dan (or anyone else) have any learnings besides the advice shared here please do.Thanks, Kayley

Hi Dan,
I was wondering how this all turned out for you? I'm in a similar boat right now. Any advice you can share?
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks Paul,
I'll try to make sure to keep an eye on this site move as it's much different than any other site moves i've implemented and it's incredibly tricky.

I suspect your idea for 302ing to the temp new URL is probably the best you can do given the circumstances, Jeff. The alternative would be to leave the domain the same and have all pages return a 503 header with a Retry After header indicating a time span after the return to the normal site. But this is more invasive and probably more prone to errors. If the 302 redirect stays in place for too long, search indexers may start to consider it permanent despite the 302 status, but keeping it to one week likely shouldn't cause this.
My suggestion from a marketing perspective - I would make the temp site be something like www2.sitename.com instead of "new". This way, most visitors are unlikely to even notice. If they see the "new.sitename.com" site for a week, then are put back on what they now consider the "old" site - they may think they're getting shortchanged or something is wrong that they're no longer getting the "right" version of the site.
The other thing to make sure you've checked on - what other 3rd-party integrations/tools/advertising networks/analytics etc will need to be addressed while the redirect is in place? (For example, Adwords and many ad platforms don't look kindly on ads that redirect from their display URL to a new URL.) So make sure you've checked out and adjusted for any of those. Your SSL certificate and SMTP/site notification email sending functionality are other examples.
And yea, communication and setting expectations will be key here. If the devs truly can't accomplish what they need to any other way than such a major upheaval, everyone needs to be clear that all steps will be taken, there is a plan for the move, for the return, and for monitoring and trying to compensate afterwards (like maybe some extra PPC ready to go if a significant traffic drop will require recovery time?). But there are significant unknowns and while every effort will be made to minimise impact, things beyond your control will have possible negative effects and it's impossible to know in advance how severe they might be. You'll want a clear communication plan for all stakeholders of each of these steps in advance. You don't want to be trying to come up with the communications while in the middle of the process.
Sounds like an opportunity for an interesting case study - be sure to let us know how it goes. Good luck!
Paul
[Edited to add - verifying a new GSC property for the new subdomain(but not submitting any sitemap or fetch) would be a good idea. That would let you monitor whether any of the site was getting indexed. Then as soon as the site goes back to normal and the temp site is 301-redirected back, you could use it to declare a change of address back to the main site to help get any of the temp URLs out of the index faster, (assuming any get indexed) ]

If I redirect a subdomain, does this affect the parent domain?
Hi I have a company for example: abc.com and they have a subdomain def.abc.com with a lot of errors. These errors i believe affect the parent domain abc.com. So my company would like to redirect the subdomain to another domain altogther ex: xyz.com Can i redirect the subdomain def.abc.com to another website domain? Would this affect the parent domain in a good or bad way? Or should i be using an external links to point to a new domain for the subdomain? Trying to think what's best for SEO and the parent domain. Thanks!

Linking from & to in domains and sub-domains
What's the best optimised linking between sub-domains and domains? And every time we'll give website link at top with logo...do we need to link sub-domain also with all it's pages? If example.com is domain and example.com/blog is sub-domain or sub-folder... Do we need to link to example.com from /blog? Do we need to give /blog link in all pages of /blog? Is there any difference in connecting domains with sub-domains and sub-folders?

Need to update Google Search Console profile for http to https change. Will a "change of address" option suffice or do we need to create a new GSC profile?
In the past I have seen most clients create new Google Search Profile when they update to a https URL. However a colleague of mine asked if just updating the change of address option will suffice https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106. Would it be best to just update the change of address for the Google Search Console profile to keep the data seamless? Thanks

Changing Domain Host and Potential SEO Effects
Hi Community, We are currently thinking of changing our domain hosting package and I am wondering if that could have any effects on rankings, SEO, etc. The thing here is that we aren't changing the hosting provider, we are only changing the package from the same provider. Most of the info I have found on the internet has been mostly about changing actual hosting providers versus packages from the same provider (if the makes sense). If anyone knows if this might affect our SEO and what steps we can take to safe guard against any potential pitfalls, please let us know. Thanks

Need advice on 301 domain redirection
Hello friends, We have two sites namely spiderman-example.com & avengers-example.com which sells the same product listed out under similar categories, since we are about to stop or put down the site “avengers-example.com” because we just want to concentrate in bringing up a single brand called spiderman-example.com. “Spiderman-example” has comparatively more visitors and conversion rates than ''avengers-example'' ie. 90 % more traffic and conversion. Avengers-example has a small fraction of loyal customers who still search for the brand-name & there are a hand-full of potential keywords those ranking on its own. So is it advisable to redirect Avengers-example to spiderman-example using 301-redirect? Will this help to gain any link-juice from Avengers-example? If so how can we effectively redirect between two domain’s with minimal loss in page authority & linkjuice to enhance ''spiderman-example''? Off beat:These names "Avengers" and "Spiderman" were just used as an example but the actual site names has no relation to the ones mentioned above.

Website change of address
Hi Everyone, I apologize if the answer to this questions is obvious, but I wanted some input on how changing our web address of our site will affect our SERP. We are looking to change our website address from a.com to b.com due to rebranding of our company (primarly to expand our product line as our current url and company name are restricting). I understand that this can be done using 301 direct and via webmaster tools with google. My question is how does this work exactly? Will our old website address show in SERP rankings, and when a user clicks on the listing are they redirected to our new address? With regards to building new links from press releases etc, do we have links point to our new web address or the old one in order to increase SERP? Does google see our old address and new address as the same website and therefor it does not matter where inbound links point to and both will increase our ranking positions? It took 6 years of in house seo to get our website to rank on the first page of all the major search engines for our keywords, so we am being very cautious before we do anything. Thanks everyone for your input, it is greatly appreciated 🙂

What to do with keyword specific domains
I have a few domain names with the keywords I'm trying to target for my website. My website currently has been in operations for a couple years, and while not hugely authoritative, has built some value. Now, are these domain names with keywords any use to me? Is there any point to forward them to my site? Do I try to build up a page (or a few of content) and then have a link to my main site? Any insight would be mucho appreciated! Thanks!

Multiple domains, which does Google like better?
From a business perspective It seems a better idea to have one site and multiple domains pointing to that one site. Is there any benefit as far as ranking well in Google to having a site set up on each domain with links to the main site? Does you have any success from a business point of view in using this strategy? P.S. This is my 4th question in Beta testing, just want to make sure I'm not taking advantage of your generosity and if it is fine to keep asking questions here.
