Best Keyword Strategy for Lower-Authority-Ranked Domain
-
Hi,
What should a lower-authority-ranked blog (DA - 21) who is trying to increase general traffic focus on above all when selecting keywords: difficulty, monthly volume, opportunity, or priority? I know that all are important factors to consider, but I fear that without an already consistent following our new content will just get hidden behind more established domains if we select too difficult of keywords. I'd love to hear from someone who's built up a blog audience as to what strategy they used here.
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion (and the initial response). This was a really helpful explanation of what quality content entails!

Ross Hudgens has a good article that describes what it takes to be competitive.
-
What exactly did you mean by 'ability to compete' though?
Ability to compete is the ability to create spectacular content, promote it with titles and headlines that people will respond to and spontaneously share, and have a tribe that will do that for you, or an ability to ask for and get valuable links.
Most people can't do this.
Most who can do this only achieve it with a fraction of their articles - even though they work hard at every one of them.
A lot of people think that they have "good content". Perhaps an English professor would have given the writing and the presentation a "good grade" but that isn't enough. You need writing and images that people see and say... Wow!... then they share it because they want their friends to know what they have found. For that to happen you must have content that is at least one clear step above all other competition.

Thanks for the response! At this point we're primarily going to be doing informational. Our tribe is about 15,000 spread across various social media platforms (not so much email yet, unfortunately).
It's encouraging to hear someone say that it is indeed possible to rank for difficult keywords with good content--which I'm confident we can create--when there are already juggernauts out there. What exactly did you mean by 'ability to compete' though? And is there a difficulty score that would be considered too high right now for a beginner? I'm looking at publishing an article this week focusing on a keyword with a difficulty score of 39 and a priority of 46 (the highest score I've found for the topic). the competition for which would be some fairly established websites, including NBCNews. I've also looked at similar keywords with with lower difficulty scores, but they also have somewhat lower priority scores.
I look forward to your response.

I believe that the strategy is better determined by 1) the type of site you are working on (transactional vs informational); 2) the quality of content that you are best able to produce; 3) the investment that you are willing to put into the content; and, 4) the strength of your tribe.
For informational, you can pick and choose the keywords to where you have the ability and resources to defeat the best content on the web, or at least compete with it. If you don't have the content-producing ability or the ability to pay for it, your chances of success are greatly diminished. If you can compete with the best content of the difficult keywords then you should attack the biggest keywords where you have the ability to compete. Don't fear competition because where there is a lot of competition, there is usually a lot of traffic and a lot of money changing hands.
If you don't have the ability to produce or pay for highest quality content and intend to attack with prattle, then your chances of success are greatly diminished. Just sayin'.
In transactional, a good method is to publish content that is highly useful for the people who are about to make a transaction or have made a transaction and now need information. How to select the product, how to use it, how to fix it, how to enjoy it are very good fields for transactional websites. They earn respect of shoppers and earn respect of people with an interest in the products you are offering. They pull links, traffic, social engagement and make your site a "go to place" on the web.
Your tribal resource might be current traffic who will share your content or current social strength that will enable you to share and that sharing be spread. Here, again is where highest quality content succeeds and prattle is not worth much.
It's not about the authority that you have today... its the authority where your content can take you.

Domain name migration
I have purchased a new domain name (b), shorter and more cool than the one I'm actually using (a). Also I'm planning to use wordpress on (b), since my actual site was build entirely on html. So lets say making a migration so slowly. In the meantime I finish (b), I would like to include the name on my cards, and other promos, as well as actualize the new name in all my social profiles. I thinked on doing a 302 on (b) pointing to (a), till the day it will be finished. That day I'll do the opposite, so pointing (a), this time with a 301, to (b). Is this the best way of doing it, in terms os SEO? Thanks

Tools for Monitoring Hundreds to Thousands of Keywords and Rankings
Hi All, I am in process of doing and SEO overhaul for our five global sites in: US, UK, Canada, Sweden, France I'd like to track hundreds of keywords and rankings per site - I'm talking at least 300-400 keywords each site. Each site has its own country domain with both www and www2 domains. So, I need a keyword tool that will let me track massive amounts of keywords. I know that the Moz Pro tool helps, but we only have 350 keywords on this account. I think on this. Any suggestions on something reliable that will provide good data? I'm sure I can get some budget to purchase something, but I also can't spend too too much money. I'm not looking for a massive analytics package. Right now, I'm concerned mainly with our keyword rankings Thanks in advance!

Page authority questions?
I've been analyzing some IT communities ...in order to check how relevant is the page authority vs PageRank. I found one main site which is organized by "communities'..and every community is a sub-domain. The root domain has an authority of 90/100 which it should be great......so the sub-domains "inherit" part of this authority.... Until here everything seems to be perfect. However, I went deeper and I picked one of these communities. Analyzing the "Linking Root Domain" I discovered it only has only 5 root domains pointing to its home page. Those 5 Root Domains have generated more than 134k links. That doesn't seem to be "natural". Checking those 5 Root Domains I discovered that they have been registered by the same Root Domain site. Ex: Main domain: Domain.com Community1.domain.com Community2.domain.com.... Linking Root Domains: DomainXY.com DomainABC.com DomainRST.com DomainFGH.com DomainOPQ.com It seems to me that it is easy to cheat the authority domain score. Just creating others sites developing the same topic and generating back links to your main domain

Local Rankings Drop?
G'morning! I got a disturbing report this morning that showed seven of our big keywords drop from high on the first page to not in the top 50. After further research I have found that we are now in Google's local cluster, but no longer on the traditional organic results. My question is this, has Google changed something that doesn't allow results in the local cluster AND in the traditional organic listings? I'm assuming that this is the case because we're doing smart SEO and have built these rankings up nicely over time, but then just fell off the face of the earth. I have attached a snapshot of Moz's Ranking History for a few of the keywords, as I assume this will help explain the story. (We're in green). Any insight would be much appreciated. Proportion of branded keywords vs targeted keywords in anchor text distribution
Hello, I have a question about the proportion (in %) of branded keywords vs targeted keywords in the anchor text distribution of a website. Suppose if I have a website with 3 targeted keywords and 2 branded keywords in the anchor text distribution that looks like this: 1 main targeted keyword 20% 2 targeted keyword 15 % 3 targeted keyword 15 % 4 branded keyword 10 % 5 branded keyword 5 % 6 more keywords 35% The question is: What would be the best distribution in percentages to aim for the main and other keywords? Should the branded keyword % increase and (main) targeted decrease? Or something else? (I have "Opensite Explorer" and Cognitive SEO" as tools to measure.) Thank you for your answers!

Why isn't my Domain Authority much higher than my competitors'?
Looking at the Competitive Link Analysis report shows my domain outperforming my competitors on Domain MozRank, Domain MozTrust, total links, linking root domains, followed linking root domains, and linking c-blocks. But Domain Authority scores are very similar across all four sites with one competitor actually scoring higher than my domain. How should I unpick this result? I'm assuming that there must a problem with my link profile. Is that a valid assumption? Thanks, Tom fc7Ez.png
