Sale-a-day websites massive unused seo power, where's their marketing?
-
How do these companies market themselves so well? Is it 90% social media?
I'm curious to how they initially got off the ground and it seems like I need to be exploring these marketing techniques as well.
-
Agreed. These sites are big on referrals. If you invite a friend and they make a purchase you receive a kick-back. Your friend also receives a discount on their first purchase on some of these, etc.
This promotes passing on the message and is a huge marketing tool.

If you truly provide an exceptional value for customers or if you fill a niche need in an exceptional way, all you have to do is let a few people know about it and the marketing will take off on it's own. Do something better then anyone else to where people want to tell their friends about it.
When you can walk into a large office environment and notice employees in their cubicles talking about your site or company with their co-workers, you are probably doing something very well or, as EGOL would say, kick-ass

hehe..things I can tell you about hautelook and gilt. Let me put this in simple terms so you will understand better.
These sites work on closeout items from brand stores (think about groupon) except much larger picture with product to clear out - seasonal clearances. In one day for example products from company I work with cleared products on haute for 45K..That is just one day.
Marketing. Very simple. Email Lists. Extremely large email lists and referrals. We are talking about millions. What you need to know that each one of those stores is not started by an average guy. These are huge chains like nordstrom, macy's that use their mrkt initially to start it and then it is all about friend referrals. Super cool idea. Be big to become big. Stay tuned though - these are little fish still. In spring you will see what zappos is doing with it as well.

What is a good forum or resource to contact fellow SEO professionals for SEO partnership opportunities i.e. link trades?
While Moz is an excellent resource, i get the impression that it is for community-based SEO questions that can serve as a knowledge database. I am looking for a forum or resource where I can contact other SEO workers to explore link exchange opportunities. For example, i want to reach out to those who do SEO for audio/visual, technology, and event-planning companies so i can offer them links in exchange for some recommended links to my site. Before anyone dogs on link trading as being spammy and not best practice, it would only be done in a useful, relevant, and non-spammy fashion with other high authority sites. Thanks! Ryan

Universal Local Results & Venice Update - What's what?
There is some buzz in the community regarding the Venice Update of the Google Algorithm. Google has said the following about this: "Improvements to ranking for local search results. [launch codename “Venice”] This improvement improves the triggering of Local Universal results by relying more on the ranking of our main search results as a signal."

source:http://insidesearch.blogspot.com/2012/02/search-quality-highlights-40-changes.html A lot of Blog posts refer to this update and discuss the effect of the location of the googler on the ranking of "standard/traditional results". My question is: Does the term 'Local Universal Results' include "standard/traditional" results or is it used by Google to refer to 'Google Places' Results in the standard SERP? So, are the results that are impacted by Venice recognizable as 'Local Results' (by the teardrop and google Maps and so on), or does it influence 'standard/traditiona results' as well, other than simply pushing them down by inserting Google Places results in the SERP? Thanks a lot! 1WWBV.jpg0 -
Google's weighting of Page Load speed
Hey, we recently optimised our website page load speed as part of our overall optimisation. Page load speed according to the Google Developers Page Speed test was previously 51 out of 100 and is now 92 out of 100 and this was improved within the last seven days gradually, cached half way through the improvement process. I appreciate this is regarded as only a small part of the whole process, however, I’d be interested to know if anyone has a concrete opinion/proof on whether such a big improvement would actually make a difference to our rankings in the SERPs.

Doing SEO when using location is not an option
When doing SEO for a company that does not have a specific location (they are an online-only retailer), and doesn't want their manufacturing location given, what is some advice on other great SEO tactics that will help counter the disadvantages of not using anything location-related (Google Places, directory submissions, etc). Obviously backlinking and on-page optimization, but in regards to the fact that Google is becoming more and more encouraging of sites that are location-optimized and listed in many records such as Places, Yelp, directories, etc., does anyone have any advice?

What SEO conferences do you recommend?
I need your recommendations for which SEO conference I should attend to during 2011-2012. I've been working with SEO since 2002 so I'm not a beginner. I want the good stuff! 🙂 However I havn't been to that many conferences before, only PubCon Las Vegas several times. I would therefore appreciate some help from you guys who have tried them all (or at least several of them) 🙂 Thank's a lot!
