Question on Indexing, Hreflang tag, Canonical
-
Dear All,
Have a question.
We've a client (pharma), who has a prescription medicine approved only in the US, and has only one global site at .com which is accessed by all their target audience all over the world.
For the rest of the US, we can create a replica of the home page (which actually features that drug), minus the existence of the medicine, and set IP filter so that non-US traffic see the duplicate of the home page.Question is, how best to tackle this semi-duplicate page. Possibly no-index won't do because that will block the site from the non-US geography. Hreflang won't work here possibly, because we are not dealing different languages, we are dealing same language (En) but different Geographies.
Canonical might be the best way to go?
Wanted to have an insight from the experts.
Thanks,
Suparno (for Jeff) -
Any time always happy to help me let me know if I can be of any service in the future.

Thanks Tom for all the insights and details.

Hi Suparno,
Yes you can by using the /x/ page to list Languages that you offer you can utilize it to tell users what language's you offer. But keep your site the way it is (for the USA) so it would look like this. One lang page & then making "/" the US site/folder.
Does that make sense?
Let me know if you have any other questions.
all the best,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Sorry, one more question, trying to narrow down.
So, we can use:for the rest of the world page
and
for the US site.
Am I correct?

Hi Suparno,
Happy to be of help.
PS.
I know one thing that has made a very big difference for me. If you are going to use one domain to rank all over the world using subfolders. By matching a server near users with a web-based load balancer like (GSLB) global server load balancer you can keep users very happy.
I have seen the best from Fastly & Incapsula
- https://www.fastly.com/products/load-balancing

All the best,

Thanks Tom, this should be good enough, many thanks.

"So, the question is how do we tackle that .../ex-us home page, which will be an almost duplicate of example.com"
Make the x page /x & tell people that what types of English you have with it.
Then on /en-us/ use the USA based content you have now you can even skip the
hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/
&
Use
I would use
The bottom four to start going after the rest of the world if you add hreflang the page is not thought of a duplicate page.
Try making tags using https://www.sistrix.com/hreflang-guide/hreflang-generator/
Wach this video by Google https://youtu.be/8ce9jv91beQ
This tell's you everything https://www.sistrix.com/hreflang-guide/ about duplicate content & hreflang
Hope this helps,

Hi David and Tom,
Many thanks for all the details and references and combining my reply. And BTW, I'm Suparno, our agency account is in Jeff's name, anyways.I thought of hreflang tags, but here is the point. We can force EN-US for US site, but how can we tackle the rest of the world. They won't be willing to go for all (major) country specific pages and tags, because So in practical scenario, it will be example.com for the US and and example.com/ex-us for the rest of the world. So, the question is how do we tackle that .../ex-us home page, which will be an almost duplicate of example.com
LMK your thoughts.

Hi Jeff,
I agree with what David said. I think the only way to do it you're talking about is with Hreflang ideally you would use that technology to accomplish dealing the same language (En) but different geographies you will need to put pricing everything in the native countries correct format. Great Britain and Canada spell color differently than the United States take that into account as well as it's extremely important.
Take a look at this tool and if you can create the country you wish to specify and keep English as the language which you can and you can create hreflang tags ( I left a good amount of references below to get you started)
- A tool to make the URLs: https://www.aleydasolis.com/english/international-seo-tools/hreflang-tags-generator/
now keep in mind this is nowhere near perfect but this would be something you could easily do remember English is written differently all over the world and you want to take advantage of that when you write the content for Great Britain or for Canada.
or
Usage: The markup for the part of the HTML document:
-
example.com/en-gb: For English-speaking users in the UK
-
example.com/en-us: For English-speaking users in the USA
-
example.com/en-au: For English-speaking users in Australia
-
example.com/: The homepage may, for example, display a list of countries to chose from and is defined as the default page for users worldwide

Hi Jeff,
You can use hreflang to target the same language in different regions.
Google provide a good example of this about halfway down this page: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en
Like in the example here, you may want to use the US version of the site as the English default and specify regions for the rest.
Cheers,
David

Syntax: 'canonical' vs "canonical" (Apostrophes or Quotes) does it matter?
I have been working on a site and through all the tools (Screaming Frog & Moz Bar) I've used it recognizes the canonical, but does Google? This is the only site I've worked on that has apostrophes. rel='canonical' href='https://www.example.com'/> It's apostrophes vs quotes. Could this error in syntax be causing the canonical not to be recognized? rel="canonical"href="https://www.example.com"/>

Changing Canonical Tags on Indexed Pages that are Ranking Well
Hi Guys, I recently rolled out a domain wide canonical tag change. Previously the website had canonical tags without the www, however the website was setup to redirect to www on page load. I noticed that the site competitors were all using www and as far as I understand www versus non www, it's based on preference. In order to keep things consistent, I changed the canonical tag to include the www. Will the site drop in rankings? Especially if the pages are starting to rank quite well. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Links Questions and advice?
I have a website which has a fair few link assets that are doing very well (a lot of really powerful sites have link to them with follow links) but my commercial pages are not doing as well as a lot of sites without any other investment than (mediocre) links direct to there commercial pages with at least 10% of them carrying the money anchor text. Even pages we have had a few links for with generalized real anchor text and reasonable links do not do as well as the above due to none of them carrying the money keyword? Is it me or does google still rely on links to the commercial page and keywords with anchor text to match the money term?

Schema question
Hi all, We have two Trustpilot schemas (Local Business) on our web pages ( One on desktop / one on mobile) but we are finding that it is not updating the number of reviews in the search results. When using the tool : https://developers.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/ , the test results are coming back ok. I have two ideas as to why it may not be working; 1) The duplication of the schema code is causing issues 2) We had to change the html code for all of our 50+ backend pages using a search&replace WordPress plugin to save a vast amount of time. Maybe this is plugin related? The fact that the google testing tool gives back positive results adds to the confusion. I test both of the theorised issues to see if it provides a fixes. Can anyone shed some further light on this issue? Is there something obvious I am missing? All responses are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tom p.s. Google and PDF indexing
It was recently brought to my attention that one of the PDFs on our site wasn't showing up when looking for a particular phrase within the document. The user was trying to search only within our site. Once I removed the site restriction - I noticed that there was another site using the exact same PDF. It appears Google is indexing that PDF but not ours. The name, title, and content are the same. Is there any way to get around this? I find it interesting as we use GSA and within GSA it shows up for the phrase. I have to imagine Google is saying that it already has the PDF and therefore is ignoring our PDF. Any tricks to get around this? BTW - both sites rightfully should have the PDF. One is a client site and they are allowed to host the PDFs created for them. However, I'd like Mathematica to also be listed. Query: no site restriction (notice: Teach for america comes up #1 and Mathematica is not listed). https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#q=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf+"Teach+charlotte"+filetype:pdf&as_qdr=all&filter=0 Query: site restriction (notice that it doesn't find the phrase and redirects to any of the words) https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#as_qdr=all&q="Teach+charlotte"+site:www.mathematica-mpr.com+filetype:pdf

Is it ok to add rel=CANONICAL into the desktop version on top of the rel="alternate" Tag (Mobile vs Desktop version)
Hi mozzers, We launched a mobile site a couples months ago following the parallel mobile structure with a URL:m.example.com The week later my moz crawl detected thousands of dups which I resolved by implementing canonical tags on the mobile version and rel=alternate onto the desktop version. The problem here is that I still also got Dups from that got generated by the CMS. ?device=mobile ?device=desktop One of the options to resolve those is to add canonicals on the desktop versions as well on top of the rel=alternate tag we just implemented. So my question here: is it dangerous to add rel=canonical and rel=alternate tags on the desktop version of the site or not? will it disrupt the rel=canonical on mobile? Thanks

Content not indexed
How come i google content that resides on my website and on my homepage and my site doesn't come up? I know the content is unique i wrote that. I have a feeling i have some kind of a crawling issue but cannot determine what it is. I ran the crawling test and other tools and didn't find anything. Google shows me that pages are indexed but yet its weird try googling snippets of content and you'll see my site isnt anywhere. Have you experienced that before? First i thought it was penalized but i submitted the reconsideration request and it came back clear, No manual spam action found. And i did not get any message in my GWMT either. Any thoughts?

H1 Tags
Quick and easy most likely - Just need to clear a few point. I understand each page within the site should only have one H1 tag which should be the most important one. I also believe these only effect google ranking very slightly? right? Currently my CMS is system is pulling the H1 tag in from the page and automatically using the page heading that is on the page IE) the heading used for the content. Should this be a keyword / key phrase instead? and will it be duplicate if i used the same one on various pages in my site? Cheers guys look forward to hearing your feedback
