Is this method of redirecting of 404 okay?
-
Hi all,
This is my first post at this forum
I'am running a Opencart shop with a SEO extension installed. This extension has a redirect module which works like this.
When visiting the site on 404 url (and if there is setup a redirect for that url). It serves the correct content but on the 404 url with the correct url set in rel canonical.
For example:
Try visit this url:
https://makitech.no/ventilasjon/ventilasjons-pakketilbud
Here i have setup a redirect to the correct content, which is actually this url https://makitech.no/pakketilbudI am used to use a 301 header redirect so the user get redirected to the correct url.
So my question is this. Is it a okay practice to serve the content on the 404 url (it responds 200) when the correct url is set in canonical? Any thoughts?
-
The URL https://makitech.no/ventilasjon/ventilasjons-pakketilbud was correct on the 05.02.2018 (google cache time) and did at this time not have any rel canonical set. When looking at the Google cache all i se is a white page, but when clicking on "view text-version" and "view sourcecode version" i se the content. Not sure why google cache shows only a white page on "view full version".
Quote: "the more redirects you have in place, the slower the load times get".
The way it's working now, there is no redirect. The shop is fetching the correct content but serving it on the "old/wrong url" instead of doing a 301. But it appends the rel canonical to the correct url.
So i'am wondering if this is okay seen from Google's SEO eye

Well, if the pages are being indexed, you have an eye on speeding things up and you aren't losing any customers because of it, then I can't see any real harm in it. I can't deny that it seems a bit of an odd way of getting there - perhaps other sites do something similar but I just haven't seen them - the Internet is a big place
I am very much of the opinion, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The extension i use is built this way and i can change the behaviour by changing the extensions sourcecode. But since it's built this way by the author, i wonder why. That's why i'am looking for an answer if it's okay practice.
The general load time is not optimized, that's also on my todo-list

It does seem like a long way of getting to the page.
I checked the page but when you do a cache:https://makitech.no/ventilasjon/ventilasjons-pakketilbud it doesn't show the page as not cached, but I can't see the page. THis might be something at my end - or might not. The same with this page: cache:https://makitech.no/pakketilbud
As Donald said, the more redirects you have in place, the slower the load times get - are you limited by the system to what you can / can't do?

My only question would be the speed of the redirect. Over 5 seconds. Maybe loose some potential customers who do not want to wait. Is there a reason you cannot 301 the url that is giving the 404?
Thanks,
Don Silvernail

Solve Redirect Chains
I've gotten a few Redirect Issues that involve Redirect Chains, with the https:// version redirecting to the www. version and then redirecting to the right URL. Here is an example:

Schermafbeelding 2021-12-07 om 11.04.32.png I've tried setting a direct redirect between the first and the last URL, but WordPress doesn't seem to allow that (it's overwritten). I've also tried checking the internal links to make sure that none of the links are the first one. They don't seem to be there. Does anyone have any tips on solving these Redirect Chains?0 -
SEO and auto login with redirect
Hi, we have a site where user we know (cookie-based) is automatic redirected to private internal page. Unknown guests are staying on the page google search sent them. The redirect is done with a 302 to the private page. When I examine organic search and landing pages in analytics I see that more than 50% of the landing pages are private pages (inaccessible for the google-bot). This is because analytics does not register the redirecting page, just the target page. Is this harmful to SEO that so many users are redirected to other pages, or is this data not available to google-bot. The google bots is not redirect since they do not have the correct credentials. Do chrome or analytics send such data back to Google search? Is better to manipulate analytics page track call to use the address of the redirecting page? Or maybe skip to redirect, and just render the private content on the orginal page?

Acquired Old, Bad Content Site That Ranks Great. Redirect to Content on My Site?
Hello. my company acquired another website. This website is very old, the content within is decent at best, but still manages to rank very well for valuable phrases. Currently, we're leaving the entire site active on its own for its brand, but i'd like to at least redirect some of the content back to our main website. I can't justify spending the time to create improved content on that site and not our main site though. What would be the best practice here? 1. Cross-domain canonical - and build the new content on our main website? 2. 301 Redirect Old Article to New Location containing better article 3. Leave the content where it is - you won't be able to transfer the ranking across domain. Thanks for your input.

Deleted pages still registering as 404 pages.
I have a an all html site that I can only work on through the ftp. The previous marketing company ran a script that built thousands of location landing pages, but all they did was change the tags and headers and the keywords in the pages, other than that they are all duplicate pages. I removed them, but Google is reading them as 404 pages. How do I tell Google those pages don't exist? or do I just need to let the bots crawl it a few times and it will see that eventually?

Redirecting to an exact match root domain: good, bad, or neutral?
We have a client who wants to secure an exact match domain for their new website, but it's very long. They're wondering about securing an additional domain that is much shorter for marketing purposes (business cards, email addresses, etc). We would then 301 redirect the short domain to the main domain. Are we going to see negative SEO implications from that?
