Planning to update my Volusion site to HTTPS protocol. Concerns.
-
I'm planning to update my Volusion Commerce site to https protocol. A config variable switch will config urls to become secure https urls. I'm looking into what additional steps I must take and issues that I may run into.
I guess any relative links within my site will not be affected but how about incoming backlinks. How do I address this.
Also concerned about previous redirects. Do I have to create a new xml file incorporating the new protocol in the target and a version of both secure and insecure source urls.
I figure a new sitemap has to be submitted to Google Search Console - should there be a secure https://www.example version as well as a https://example version of site and older similar http versions submitted.
Thanks Howard

Hi Howard
Both Joseph and Gaston's tips here are great.
Just adding that for backlinks, you could choose a handful of your most authoritative/important backlinks and ask the sites to update the link. It's probably not super needed from a ranking standpoint, but can help Google pick up on the migration signals faster - and I find it's actually a great reason to reach out to sites and reconnect. Definitely update any backlinks you have control over (in social, profiles etc)
I definitely recommend following Aleyda's checklist that Gaston linked to.

Hi Howard!
Just to add some resources to what Joseph said, that I do completely agree on.
Take a look at these resources:
Secure your site with HTTPS - Search Console Help
The HTTP to HTTPs Migration Checklist - Aleyda Solis
Do's & Dont's for HTTPs migrations - SlideShare - Aleyda SolisHope it helps.
Best luck.

Hello Howard,
Just make sure your 301 redirects setup properly then you'll have no issue with SEO.
All variations http/https + www/non-www + trailing-slash/no-slash (homepage doesn't matter) of url make sure they redirect to a final version of your site.
You can use Screamingfrog and https://httpstatus.io to make sure everything is setup right.
I just have a site upgrade to HTTPS and it doesn't have any problems.
Hope this helps,

Keyword Cannibalization vs. Optimizing Site
I am in the process of optimizing our website and I am having a hard time reconciling two best practices I have found on Moz. 1. You should avoid having multiple pages focus on the same keyword because you will lose some control of which result will show. 2. You should identify your core keywords and weave these keywords multiple times (naturally) throughout your site. I have spent months identifying our top 7 keywords and am working through the site now. The first piece of advice keeps giving me pause. Can anyone weigh in with other considerations or advice on how I can reconcile these two strategies. Thank you

Word Count - Content site vs ecommerce site
Hi there, what are your thoughts on word count for a content site vs. an ecommerce site. A lot of content sites have no problem pushing out 500+ words per page, which for me is a decent amount to help you get traction. However on ecommerce sites, a lot of the time the product description only needs to be sub-100 words and the total word count on the page comes in at under 300 words, a lot of that could be considered duplicate. So what are your views? Do ecommerce sites still need to have a high word count on the product description page to rank better?

Moving a site from .cfm to Wordpress - How to keep the authority?
Hi guys, My client has a site built with Cold Fusion (web pages end in .cfm) and we're moving them over to Wordpress (for many reasons), keeping the same menu structure and navigation. Their previous SEO company was pretty awful, however, they did manage to establish some decent authority/backlinks for the website and its 20 or so pages. My questions: I assume I'll want to do 301 redirects for each page, possibly by editing the .htaccess file? Any advice on this? Anything else I need to consider in this move? Thanks!

Duplicate products across numerous catalogues on an eCommerce site
We run a site that contains many catalogues aimed at different markets. Products can appear in one or more catalogues. The product copy etc will be on the whole similar maybe even identical across those catalogues. So I'm assuming these will be flagged as duplicates? If so is there a way to fix this other than completely re-writing the copy for each catalogue?

Suggestions on plans to optimize my site? (NOOB)
I am currently trying to plan how to optimize my site based on keywords. I read and I understand site architecture and usability http://www.seomoz.org/blog/site-architecture-for-seo , but I am still somewhat confused about how to target each keyword per page or when http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/splitting-keyword-targeted-.gif Let me give you an example. We build databases for SME's using 3 different technologies. One of them is MS Access. Based on PPC campaigns and keyword research some of the possible keywords might be ms access programmer ms access consultants access database experts According to the link provided, should these be separate pages? I feel if they were, our site nativigation would be cluttered and clients would not be benefiting from them at all. It might even lead to some redundant data which I believe is bad right? My feeling is to make one page and target one keyword, but I'm not sure. For example, see one of our top ranking competitors http://www.justgetproductive.com/content/access-programmer/index.php Please, look at the footer? Is that actually how I should structure my links? I hope the answer is NO! Then again, if I do just have one page targeting one keyword, what do I do about the others? Do I just try to use blog posts/articles addressing those keywords? Do I not target them at all? Thanks for any advice, please keep in mind I am just getting started. My approach is to create a plan to outline everything before I put a lot of time into it.

New Site + Transfered blog: Things to watch for?
Hey everyone. So here is what's going on. 1. Built new website. Will be using generally the same URL's as original. 2. Incorporated and expanded on a previously separate informative blog. a. Many articles contain very similar if not the same articles as our blog. 3. The blog will be taken down as soon as new site is put online. So my question is just. Could someone list the like top 5 important things I need to keep in mind before putting this website live? I don't mind searching forums and blogs for the how-to part; I just need to know what I should be thinking about and getting done pre-launch. I believe re-directing the blog articles should be done? Create and submit sitemap? Thanks, Web-creation newb
