"Fake" market research reports killing SEO
-
Our robotics company is in a fast growing, competitive market. There are an assortment of "market research" companies who are distributing press releases about their research reports (which are of less than dubious quality). These announcements end up being distributed through channels with high domain authority. The announcements mention many companies in the space that the purported report covers - including ours. As a result, our company name and product brand is suffering since the volume of press announcements is swamping our ratings.
What would you do?
-
Start writing blog postings on topics and post through inexpensive news feeds?
-
Somehow contact the firms posting the contact and let them know they are in violation of our trademarks by mentioning our name?
-
Other ideas?

Is that company does not have your legal permission you can take actions on that, I have the same issue on the past. First I tried to contact the source without any response at the end a court give us a permission to get those articles down using the hosting companies. Example if a site hosted on HostGator use our brand without our permission I can request Hostgator delete that content usually Hostgator deactivate the site until the content is deleted by the owner

How to react to 3rd party content like this really depends on some other factors such as:
- Is this content showing up for your brand name, or just generic industry terms (if we were talking drones this might be "dji drone reviews" vs "4k drones")?
- Are they saying negative things about your company?
- Is the content obviously slanted or poorly produced? Usually savvy B2B buyers can ignore those on their own.
(I am not a lawyer but) It's not a trademark violation to mention your name without permission, so, you probably don't have much standing. If they're saying bad things about your company, then it really depends on whether they have a good reason for saying whatever they said. Either way - they're probably not going to take it down for you.
The broader question is really about content marketing strategy - how does your company go about producing better content that deserves to rank for whatever phrases these press releases are showing up for? Google doesn't love showing press releases in search results - if you give them something better to rank, and your site has some decent domain authority, you have a good shot of outranking that type of content.
Those are some general thoughts - this is one of those scenarios that depends on more info or specific examples.

Are businesses still hiring SEO that use strategies that could lead to a Google penalty?
Is anyone worried that businesses know so little about SEO that they are continuing to hire SEO consultants that use strategies that could land the website with a Google penalty? I ask because we did some research with businesses and found the results worrying: blog farms, over optimised anchor text. We will be releasing the data later this week, but wondered if it something for the SEO community to worry about and what can be done about it.

What do you think of this "SEO software" that uses Rand's "proven method" ?
I saw an ad on Search Engine Roundtable and the call to action was... "What is the #1 metric that Google uses to rank websites?" I thought, "I gotta know that!". (I usually don't click ads but this one tempted me.) So I clicked in and saw a method "proven by Rand Fishkin" that will "boost the rankings of your website". This company has software that will use Rand's proven method (plus data from another unattributed test to boost the rankings of your website). I am not going to use this software. The video made my BS meter ring. But if you want to see it.... http://crowdsearch.me/special-backdoor/ Rather than use this "software", I would suggest using kickass title tags that deliver the searcher to kickass content. That has worked really well for me for years. Great title tags and great content will produce the same results. The bonus for you is that the great content will give you a real website.

Why did this fabric site disappear for "fabric" and why can't we get it back?
Beverlys.com used to rank on the first page for "fabric." I'm trying to get the date of their demise, but don't have it yet so I can't pinpoint what Google update might have killed them but I can guess. In doing a backlink analysis, there were hundreds of poor quality, toxic sites pointing to them. We have carefully gone through them all and submitted a disavow request. They are now on page 9 from nowhere to be found a week ago. But, of course, that's not good enough. They are on page 2 for "fabric online" and "quilt fabric." So Google doesn't completely hate them. But doesn't love them enough even for those terms. Any suggestions? They are rebuilding the site to use a different ecommerce platform with new content and new structure. They will also be incorporating the blog within the site and I've advised them on many other ways to attract traffic and backlinks. That's coming. But for now, any suggestions and help will be much appreciated. Something has got to be holding them back for that one gem of a keyword. Also, I would like to know what experiences others have had with the disavow request form. Does Google absolutely hold you to making every attempt you can at getting those links removed? ANd how does it know? No one responds so it seems to be such a waste of time. And many now actually charge to remove your links. Thoughts? Thanks everyone!

Changes to SEO with disavow?
Has the game changed a lot with the disavow tool I can see people still saying check out what our competitors are doing but with just going through a disavow myself how do you actually know what the correct link diversity is as 0 - 100% of the links could be disavowed. Also could a competitor not just buy a load of spammy links and disavow them to mask there real links. (I know in my backlinks on 150 are good and the rest is disavowed crap)

Is domain name or page title "safe" as anchor text?
I am aware of the dangers of excessively optimized anchor text I have seen some suggestions that as long as your anchor text is either the URL or the page title that this will be OK, no matter how many links come in with that anchor text. Does anyone have an opinion, or even any hard data on this? Thx Paul
