Url too long
-
Hi we have a wordpress website for Office Furniture
Our domain name does not have office furniture in it.
So we went from having domain.com/shop/category/second-sub-cat
to domain.com/office-furniture/category/second-category
However we now have 509 products flagged with too long urls
I am wondering whether we should change back :
For example domain.com/office-furniture/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks
Should I go back to domain.com/shop/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks
Or am I going to confuse matters even more?
I should say this only affects categories as the products themselves are /shop/product
I am just concerned that changing the re-direct in place originally will just make matters worse and confuse things - would I get more value changing back? Or should I stick with it and just try to shorten urls individually by product titles etc

if the URL is too long, then what you have to think is it too long to mention on a business card?
Could it be used on the side of a van?
So, if you are just about to start a business, you might want to use a shorter URL because it's easy to remember if it's written on, say, a company card

I agree with Gaston 100%... not only that but changing your URL is not only a major pain in the butt, if not done properly can severely hurt your SEO.

Hi there!
There is nothing to worry about URL length. It was said by John Mueller that: SHORTER URLS AREN'T GIVEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT IN SEARCH - Deepcrawl Webmasters Hangouts notes 07/13/18
That said, I'd suggest you stick with the current URL structure. Think as Google likes coherence, so having a well-designed architecture in your information serves well to Google, although Google Search Algorithms can understand both structures.
Yeap, don't change too much your structure, like 301 redirects cause Google to spend more time and you could be having redirect chains that if goes higher than 5 hops Google bot will stop crawling them.If you still mind about long URLs, think on how some subfolders names can be shrunk and avoid repeating words. Look at the example you gave us: domain.com/office-furniture/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks
2x office, 2x corner, 2x desks, it could probably be like domain.com/office-furniture/corner-desks/beechHope it helps.
Best luck

URL structure of the page: Does this one need to contain the most important keyword for better SEO?
Hi everyone, I’m trying to get "air-conditioner-repair.html" to rank higher for the keyword "air conditioner los angeles". I am wondering whether or not I should change URL to "air-conditioner-los-angeles-repair.html" to get better results? Will be thankful very much for any advise you can offer!

Multi Keyword URL Ranking at Number 1
Here is part of a URL that takes the local number 1 spot for "implant dentist glasgow" [website] /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland.html The first /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/ directory or page is protected and presumably just exists for ranking reasons. I am tempted to copy that URL on a client's implant page to compete for the keyword (I believe I have better content). Given that it works well for the other site, can you think of any reason that would that be a bad idea? Thanks very much.

Replacing website, same URL, lose ranking
We had to do a rush job for a client and get a website up very quickly. We had to just replace the existing files on the server, but URL stayed the same. Now "teeth whitening glasgow" which they were number #1 for isn't coming up. Know there is still some on page work to be done - but the link profile should still remain the same? Just looking for some advice to get back to where they were - should we do a website change of address or just verify the site in Webmaster and get all the on page done? Thanks, Laura

Slash at the end of a url
I keep reading contradicting information, so I figured I'll ask here. What's the best practice for slash '/' at the end of a URL? Should it be idealchooser.com/search/laptop/ or idealchooser.com/search/laptop (no trailing slash)? The options: 1. Accept both equally 2. Accept 1 and redirect the other with 301 3. Accept 1 and treat the other as a wrong URL returning 404 Which would be the best for SEO? Thank you.

Replacing "_" with "-" in url, results in new url?
We ran SEOmoz's "On-Page Optimization" tool on a url which contains the character "_". According to the tool: "Characters which are less commonly used in URLs may cause problems with accessibility, interpretation and ranking in search engines. It is considered a best practice to stick to standard URL structures to avoid potential problems." "Rewrite the URL to contain only standard characters." Therefore we will rewrite the url, replacing "_" with "-". Will search engines consider the "-" url a different one? Do we need to 301 the old url to the new one? Thanks for your help!
