How would you handle network header links?
-
Some companies have a lot of sites covering various topics, for example, http://ninemsn.com.au/. Each category also have dropdown menus where there are more links, taking their pages to well over 100 links.
Should these headers be implemented in javascript? Is there a list of best practices somewhere when dealing with a lot of network sites? I'd prefer to reduce the number of links, but sometimes company policies don't allow this.
Any suggestions or tips would be helpful.

The "100 links per page" is a very old rule back from the days when crawling web pages was much less sophisticated then it is now. Search engines have the ability to crawl hundreds of pages.
The example you are using is a site with a DA of 85 and is in the top 1000 most trafficked sites in the world. This site can support the crawling of 100s of links. Unless your site has an exceptionally high DA, you probably want to reduce your links to the minimal amount necessary to ensure a quality user experience. As you examine your links, determine which links are actually used. There are tools such as CrazyEgg that can help you evaluate your site.
Imagine a site with 1000 pages and a link to all 1000 pages from the navigation bar. What you are telling search engines and users is that all 1000 pages are equally important. That probably is not the case. The most important pages and categories should have a link, but the lesser pages would require an additional click.

Search engines can crawl most javascript. The best practice would be to reduce the links as mentioned above. Search engines reward sites which improve the user experience by providing higher rankings. If you offer 200 links and 150 of them are not used, you are bleeding PR and your site will not rank as well overall, which is by design.
I'd prefer to reduce the number of links, but sometimes company policies don't allow this.
Your role as a SEO is to educate the company on the importance of the changes you recommend. If a company refuses to implement your recommendations, then there is not much you can do about it.

ECommerce Website Internal Links
We run an ecommerce website... approx 8K products. When using the page grader, MOZ tools consistently tell me that I have too many Internal Links on the page.
On-Page Optimization | | Ampweb
These are caused from our fairly large menu system, and probably from the sub-category links on the category landing pages as well. I was reading an article that mentioned a no-follow on these Internal links would not really solve the "Too many internal links issue", so wanted to check if anyone has ideas or should I just dis-regard this MOZ suggestion that there are too many in this type of environment?0 -
On page links
Hi I am really intrigued by Bloomberg strategy. if you look at their article pages they are full with internal links done with what I assume to be an automated process (too many pages to be done manually). it seems to work for them. I would love to hear your opinions.

Links to Paywall from Content Pages
Hi, My site is funded by subscriptions. We offer lengthy excerpts, and then direct people to a single paywall page, something like domain.com/subscribe/ This means that most pages on the site links to /subscribe, including all of the high value pages that bring people in from Google. This is a page with an understandably high bounce rate, as most users are not interested in paying for content on the web. My question is are we being penalized in Google for having so many internal links to a page with a very high bounce rate? If anyone has worked with paywall sites before and knows the best practices for this, I'd be really grateful to learn more.

Ecommerce- Keyword use in Product links on Category page
I'm wondering how Keyword use in Product links on Category pages can affect a pages rank? I have 1 site where this seems to be an issue but not on all categories. For this site, a site: keyword search ranks the category page as no.1 in the SERPS but a non-site: search shows 1 of the many products within the category as the highest ranking page (currently 20 in google) on this site. This product is probably the least likely to generate a conversion due to it's cost so this is less than ideal. The plural search of the keyword shows the category page and it ranks higher than the keyword itself (currently 9 in google) Category name and URL = keyword. The category is paginated with 12 products per page. Product URL and anchor text is brand-model-type (where type = keyword) I'd like to keep the product URLs and anchors as they are if I can as they are well searched terms themselves but I want to optimize a category page to rank for the keyword itself. Have any of you overcome a similar issue? Would adding more text to the category page dilute the issue?

Anyone know of a tool to monitor site for outgoing links?
Is there any type of tool that can monitor a large website's outgoing links? I'm dealing with a huge site and was hoping there was something available that could check outgoing links without having to go through each page manually. (I'm looking to remove anything that links to a bad neighborhood). Thanks.

No links or traffic to our articles
Hello, Our articles are written by a professional in the field, taylored to what we think our ecommerce customers would most want to know about. But there is no traffic to our articles and almost no inbound links. We have 15 articles around 500 words (roughly) each. We've got a right sidebar banner about our FAQ and articles and a rotating banner with one slde about our articles. Also, we have a tab at the top. We've had a good article section for 5 months, and a descent one for a couple of years Could it be our industry, or what can we do?
