Pillar pages and blog pages
-
Hello,
I was watching this video about pillar pages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db3TpDZf_to and tried to apply it to my self but find it impossible to do (but maybe I am looking at it the wrong way).
Let's say I want to rank on "Normandy bike tou"r. I created a pillar page about "Normandy bike tour" what would be the topics of the subpages boosting that pillar page. I know that it should be questions people have but in the tourism industry they don't have any, they just want us to make them dream !!
I though about doing more general blog pages about things such as :
Places to rent a bike in Normandy or in XYZ city ? ( related to biking)
Or the landing sites in Normandy ? (not related to biking)
Is it the way to do it, what do you recommend ?
Thank you,
-
Thank you Miriam. I can't agree more with what you said. See that Normandy isn't a pillar page. I guess the best approach is to create blog bags that are more general that cyclists might be interested about. For example, the best cycling shorts in 2019 and so one.... Is it the way you would go ?

Thanks so much for the link!
That's a good video. I enjoyed watching it and see how it worked well for HubSpot. So basically, from watching that, I see that HubSpot is calling their core topic a pillar page. In your case, your core topic is "Normandy Bike Tour". Following their model, you would be creating blog posts answering user questions surrounding that topic ... but you are saying your research is telling you no one has questions surrounding this core topic. That kind of made me scratch my head and I went to AnswerThePublic to see what they said. I was honestly surprised at how little their tool turned up:
https://answerthepublic.com/reports/f9df5323-7f1b-48a2-90e6-293279b7b916
So not a ton of help to you there, but do scroll down that page to see a couple of ideas.
Google's related searches is showing me:
tours of brittany and normandy
And if you start slowly typing Normandy bike tour (one letter a time) into Google's search box, you see things like:
Normandy bike routes
Normandy biker friendly B&B
Normandy bike trips
Normandy bike hub
So, while these aren't questions, per se, they are possible ideas for blog post content that can support your pillar page.
If I replace "Normandy" with "France" both in Google and at AnswerThePublic, I get more information, and it's making me wonder if your topic is a bit too narrow to be a true "pillar" by HubSpot's definition. I wonder, rather, if your core topic is actually French bike tours and information about touring Normandy is one of the supporting topics rather than a pillar. I'm not sure what your complete business model is, if it's limited to Normandy-only, or if it has a larger topic. Care to provide any more detail on this?

Why rankings dropped from 2 page to 8th page and no penalization?
Dear Sirs, a client of mine for more than 7 years used to have his home page (www.egrecia.es) between 1st and 2nd page in the Google Serps and suddenly went down to 8 page. The keyword in question is "Viajes a Grecia". It has a good link profile as we have built links in good newspapers from Spain, and according to Moz it has a 99% on-page optimization for that keyword, why why why ??? What could I do to solve this? PD: It has more than 20 other keywords in 1st position, so why this one went so far down? Thank you in advance !

Redirecting homepage to internal page (2nd Tier page)
We are planning to experiment redirecting our homepage to one of the 2nd tier page. I mean....example.com to example.com/page. We need this page to rank well, but it doesn't have much internal links or external back-links, so we opt for this redirect. Advantage with this page is, it has "keyword" we want to rank for in URL. "page" in example.com/page. Will this help or hurt us in SEO? I think we are missing keyword in our root domain, so interested to highlight this page. Thanks, Satish

Would it work to place H1 (or important page keywords) at the top of your page in HTML and move lower on page with CSS?
I understand that the H1 tag is no longer heavily correlated with stronger ranking signals but it is more important that Keywords or keyphrases are at the top of a page. My question is, if I just put my important keyword (or H1) toward the top of my page in the HTML and move it towards the middle/lower portion with css position elements, will this still be viewed by Googlebot as important keywords toward the top of my page? Drop in Indexed pages
Hope everyone is having an Awesome December! I first noticed a drop in my index in the beginnings of November. My site drop in indexed pages from 1400 to 600 in the past 3-4 weeks. I don't know the cause of it, and would like the community to help me figure out why my indexing has dropped. Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to read this.

Landing pages, are my pages competing?
If I have identified a keyword which generates income and when searched in google my homepage comes up ranked second, should I still create a landing page based on that keyword or will it compete with my homepage and cause it to rank lower?

Google Generating its Own Page Titles
Hi There I have a question regarding Google generating its own page titles for some of the pages on my website. I know that Google sometimes takes your H1 tag and uses it as a page title, however, can anyone tell me how I can stop this from happening? Is there a meta tag I can use, for example like the NOODP tag? Or do I have to change my page title? Thanks Sadie

On the index page, I have the following: I have never put any thought into which index path is the best to use. http://www.example.com http://www.example.com/ http://www.example.com/index.php Could someone shed some light on this for me? Does it make a difference? Thanks! Ryan
