How to optimize for software carousels? [2019]
-
There was a lot of discussion back in spring 2017 when carousels were expanded in Google. But no definitive answers on how Google determines which sites rank for these results and what SEOs can do to get listed. My site (ansys.com) ranks for some of these results (example: "cfd software"), but the product listed in the result is not the primary product from our suite that should rank for these queries. Also the image Google displays is an outdated product logo pulled from a low-level blog post. This despite having structured data on our site with correct logos. Also, we only rank for carousels in one of our product categories and not others, despite ranking on pg. 1 for those results. So rank doesn't seem to be a primary factor.
What is the secret sauce for ranking for these software carousels? And is it even worth it to try?

Your question lead me to discover the complete answer for myself, as I'm also always on the path of discovery. I found this whiteboard Friday that also lead to this article about using screaming frog which I found extremely informative. Hope that helps -Paul

Question about Image Optimization and File Size -- Does it really matter
I was using Moz's guidelines (https://moz.com/learn/seo/page-speed) to reduce the file size of my pages to improve load speed, but I'm not sure it really makes much of a difference. On this page https://www.mtecorp.com/cad/MAPP0006A002/, the file size is 710KB and it's Google Page Insight Score is 84 on desktop and 66 on mobile. On this page https://www.mtecorp.com/cad/SWNW0130E/, I got the image size to 227KB and its Google Page insight Score is virtually the same, 87 on desktop and 62 on mobile. Any ideas if it is really worth the time to get images down? (or maybe it doesn't matter if it is less than 1,000KB.

How to deal with URLs when changing shopping cart software to ensure SEO
NSFW ALERT (LINK BELOW) We are changing the shopping section of our website. Currently the products sit on our own website and when a user goes to checkout they are taken to Mals (a shopping cart site). This means our URL’s look like this. NSFWhttps://www.aprilnites.com.au/mascara_vibe.htmlThe new software is Ecwid and we are using this with a site created in RapidWeaver so the URLs will not be clean and will have all ? And # parameters. I’m wondering if this will hurt the SEO of our whole site or just the product pages. I’m also unsure of how best to deal with the current URLs. Should I use a 301 redirect on all of them to take the user back to the home page of the shop. For us the shop is more of a catalogue. Our main website is the most important part but I want to make sure we are following best practice when making this change. Hope someone can help. Many thanks

Optimizing blog domain for maximum rank/traffic potential
Hello wonderful Moz community! I need some advice. Here is the situation: I work in a small division within a much larger company. We each have our own domain, i.e. www.parent.com and www.child.com. We (the child) have a domain authority of 57, while our parent has a domain authority of 86. Our blog lives on blogs.parent.com/child. My understanding is that www.brand.com/blogs is better for SEO than blogs.brand.com (we had no control of directory structure decisions at the parent level). Given all that, in terms of maximizing traffic to our domain, would we be better off moving our blog to www.child.com/blogs? Here are a couple of potential pros/cons bouncing around in my newbie brain: a) By moving the blog to our domain, our whole site could benefit from having any external links our blog posts earn point back to our domain vs. our parent's domain. b) On the other hand, leaving the blog on our parent's domain and then linking to our content from posts over there might give our content a boost. (Of course, that theory is shot down if Google recognizes our parent/child relationship and doesn't reward our site with the benefit of linkbacks coming from our parent domain.) What say you? Are there other angles to this I’m not even considering? If you think the right decision is to move the blog over to our site, any suggestions on how not to screw that up? (301’s, etc.) Thanks in advance for your thoughts! -John

Need help optimizing Windows IIS server for SEO
My web site, www.nhfinehomes.com, is running on IIS7 and I did read a great post on SEOMoz.org regarding how to optimize IIS for SEO in particular, redirecting URL's to lowercase properly. However, I lack the technical skills to do this and am looking for someone who has done this before that can consult on this. Can anyone help or recommend a consultant with actual, IIS SEO experience?

Optimizing a website which uses JavaScript and jQuery
Just a quick question (or 2) If I have divs which are hidden on my page, but are displayed when a user clicks on a p tag and the hidden div is displayed using jquery a user clicks on an a tag and the hidden div is displayed using jquery with the href being cancelled in both examples, will the hidden content be optimized, or will the fact it is initially hidden make it harder to optimize? Thanks for any answers!

SEO-Friendly FAQ Software
Hi, We use Kayako Supportsuite (help desk and FAQ software) installed on our site and it's causing about 80% of all our SEO errors/issues. I've googled a lot and I can't seem to find a FAQ software (we need the ability to maintain and constantly update a large # of questions) that doesn't have duplication (print version, pdf version of each question, etc.), terrible URL structure and an overall very cheesy look. We don't need the helpdesk part, just FAQ functionality. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!
