How to rank a transactional query
-
I have a webpage about bike tours in France with a list of bike tours in France. I imagaine people don't want a big paragraph about what a bike tour in France is because this is a transactional query and not an informational query.
How do I go about ranking this page ?
Would a good title tag and good description be enough to rank that page ?
Thank you,

Well a topic sentence with a supporting sentence is a format. You might be able to demonstrate some value proposition through that format. In a way what you're asking is similar to "what is the difference between winning a race, and a high performance rally car?"
A high performance rally car could be a vehicle (format / medium) through which you deliver race results. But if you used the rally car in an F1 race, it probably wouldn't win (horses for courses)
A value proposition is something about your business which you get clearly across in a cited, qualified manner. Could you do that through a topic sentence with a supporting sentence? Maybe - it depends upon the USP which you are promoting. For example if you are trying to get across your great reviews, then obviously sentences are a bad vehicle whereas TrustPilot embedded reviews (unbiased, from a 3rd party which you cannot manipulate) would be a much better vehicle
One is a format for delivering information, the other is the type of qualified, un-biased and 'proven' information which you are supplying
If your site's value-proposition was a uniquely designed and developed calculator to deliver information to users (which your competitors couldn't deliver) then again sentences of text would be a bad vehicle. A custom designed and developed calculator would be a good vehicle
Look at how sites like Money Supermarket, Confused and Compare the Market got ahead. Their unique aggregation systems ARE their value propositions. Could they have been created using just sentences of text? No

Thank you for the detailed reply. I will start working on my value proposition and move on from there.
By the way what is the difference between a value proposition a topic sentence with a supporting sentence ?

A value proposition isn't a tag or a technical thing, it's part of the idea of the website. Miley outlines it pretty well in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AmRg3p79pM - though you only need to watch up to the point where she fully covers "Issue #1"
Your value proposition is for your business and should be reflected on your website. It can take the form of a website that is better and easier to use than all the competitors sites due to unique feature/UX integration (e.g: a calculator that assesses the breakdown of terrain on a tour, 10% mountainous 50% urban 40% forest - or something like that, and then maybe does something cool like recommends an actual bike, or supplies for the run, or both)
A value proposition can also take the form of simple USPs (e.g: better service than the competitors, better reviews from Trust Pilot, faster delivery, the lowest prices, covering a wider area, better staff expertise and local knowledge). If you go with USP-based value propositions, qualify them (saying "I'm the best!" isn't usually enough)
If the query space sucks, think what you can do to leave everyone else in the dirt and make it better. Think of some 10x content pieces
Remember: "good unique content" is rarely ever good enough to rank competitively. You have to go next level

Is a great title tag the same as a great value proposition ? I have a hard time figuring out what a good one would be because in my industry everyone is terrible ... Either they have synonyms : Bike tours in France / Cycling vacations in France or they use words like Best Bike tours in France but honestly this doesn't want to make me click at all (but they still rank). Is it because they have a value proposition which isn't in their title tag but somewhere else on the page ?
If I come up with a good title that make people want to click, is google going to boost me even though this isn't something that people have in their head when the do a search for "bike tours France " ?
Concerning the content, all of us doing bike tours in France have the same thing, a list of different tours by destination. It is very hard to differentiate myself on this. Is I had something that nobody has on their page can it help me ? or to help me does it need to be something people have in their head or are looking for ?
Thank you,

You need to do a few things.
- Write a great title tag but test variations over time to see which one gives you the best rankings and CTR.
- Add great content to this page. Something that will keep visitors on this page when they get there.
- Create other blog posts on your site that will attract links and then internally link over to your "bike tours in France" page.
- Build a handful of good inbound links to this landing page.

What should I do if same content ranked twice or more on Google?
I have a Bangla SEO related blog where I have written article like "Domain Selection" "SEO Tools" "MOZ" etc. All the article has been written in Bengali language. I have used wp tag for every post. I have submit xml site map generated by Yoast SEO. However I kept "no index" for category. I know well duplicate content is a major problem for SEO. After publishing my content Google ranked them on 1st page. But my fear is that most of the content twice or more. The keywords are ranked by post, wp post tag and Archive. Now I have a fear of penalty. Please check the screenshot and please suggest me what to do. uRCHf yq7m2 rSLKFLG

How important is it to rank for a product category?
We make a product in a category of products -- let's say "donuts". There are really only 4 major donut companies (lots of artisanal donuts out there, but they're not really competitive yet). One of our competitors has systematically achieved top rank for "donut" and lots of adjacent keywords like "donuts" and "buy donuts". My question is, does their success ranking for the product category keyword "donut" influence their success ranking for long-tail keywords like "powdered donuts" and "tastiest donuts"? Or, to flip that question, should we try to compete for "donut" before worrying about "decadent delicious donuts"? Other factors: In terms of search volume, as you would expect, "donut" sees 10 to 1000 times as many searches as most of the other keywords adjacent to it. We can definitely compete for "donut" -- just trying to figure out if doing so should be our top priority.

Search engine keyword rank - easiest way to check the keywords that rank across website
What is the best keyword ranking tool you have used? I have used various tools by which I am expected to identify and input the keyword I want to track... However, recently I was introduced to Searchmetrics, which I think automatically pulls in the keywords a website ranks for, without the need for manual input from the SEO (I haven't used this tool yet, so apologies if I am incorrect!). Do any other rank trackers work like this? Thanks, Luke

Ranking strangeness
Just wondering if anyone had come across this kind of scenario which I had/have with a client. Rebuilt/revamped site that has got problems with thin content we are looking to resolve. Rankings for the main keywords were ok on page 2 or 3 and being worked on. Two weeks ago ALL main keywords disappeared from ranking (category pages). The homepage took over and ranked ALL those keywords at #1! Bang -straight to top spot. However happy I was I find this disconcerting as there is a reasonable level of competition. Today homepage rankings in the main go and directories come back into the rankings at some good positions on page one. We still need to fix thin and duplicated content! I can justify the problems and swing with the category pages but the massive cross the board top position for the homepage has been pretty bizarre. Has anyone else had the experience where the homepage suddenly 'out-performs' in a big way?

Optimized Page Not Ranking for Head Term
We have a primary donation page that we've tried to position well for the term 'Donate' and some of its longer-tailed derivatives. The page has plenty of high-quality backlinks and internal links, and hasn't had any manual actions taken against it. The backlink profile is fairly good from what I can tell, definitely not mainly spam. The issue is that it doesn't rank for 'Donate', at all really. For 'Donate Online' and 'Donate Canada', it ranks roughly #3-4 across major Canadian cities, but we're not even in the top 100 for 'Donate'. There are pages and domains that are way less optimized, with much weaker backlink profiles, that are ranking well ahead of us. It's not a noindex or robots problem, as the page ranks fine for many other terms. We also have a strong domain with around 660k backlinks according to MajesticSEO. Here's the URL in question: http://www.redcross.ca/donate I'm hoping someone can help us diagnose what could be going wrong with this term specifically and how we can get this page into the SERPs where it belongs. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Google Ranking Wrong Page
The company I work for started with a website targeting one city. Soon after I started SEO for them, they expanded to two cities. Optimization was challenging, but we managed to rank highly in both cities for our keywords. A year or so later, the company expanded to two new locations, so now 4 total. At the time, we realized it was going to be tough to rank any one page for four different cities, so our new SEO strategy was to break the website into 5 sections or minisites consisting of 4 city-targeted sites, and our original site which will now be branded as more of a national website. Our URL structures now look something like this:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | cpapciak
www.company.com
www.company.com/city-1
www.company.com/city-2
www.company.com/city-3
www.company.com.city-4 Now, in the present time, all is going well except for our original targeted city. The problem is that Google keeps ranking our original site (which is now national) instead of the new city-specific site we created. I realize that this is probably due to all of the past SEO we did optimizing for that city. My thoughts are that Google is confused as to which page to actually rank for this city's keyword terms and I was wondering if canonical tags would be a possible solution here, since the pages are about 95% identical. Anyone have any insight? I'd really appreciate it!0 -
