Targeting multiple local geographic areas
-
I have a local client in the automotive service sector. Actually, I deal with several local, service-oriented businesses, so I am hoping to apply the knowledge gained from this question to several cases. And, I am not concerned with Google Places or Adwords in this case - I have those dialed-in just fine - I am referring to a methodology applicable to organic search results.
While it has been simple enough to target one or two local geographic regions (e.g. cities/towns) for specific key phrases related to my client's industry by adding geo-modifiers to the mix. I need to develop and apply a method to target multiple outlying towns (up to 12 within a 30mi radius) near my client's place of business - without generating pages of duplicate content (e.g. automotive service town-1, automotive service town-2, automotive service town-3, etc.)
Would someone more experienced in this area be willing to shed some light upon my dilemma?
Thanks!

Great suggestions! Especially adding testimonials from the specific areas.
You see, I am specifically interested in adding static pages (up to 10 or 12 pages) to target these regions - without sounding redundant to the viewer or the search bots.
Thanks again!

You are seeking to have your client's site be considered relevant for multiple geographic areas. A few suggestions:
1. Seek links from those areas. Receiving multiple links from a website or page associated with a specific area can help your page be considered relevant for that area.
2. Allow User-Generated Content to be generated on your site. Forums, response to blog articles, etc. Users will often add plenty of content which will drive content.
3. Add testimonials from users in those areas. "Service was great! John - Beverly Hills, CA". The addition of the location to the testimonial helps to establish relevancy for that area.
4. If there are only a few areas, then feel free to add a list to your content. "We service the Los Angeles, San Diego and Beverly Hills area" is fine. When you list a dozen areas, then it would probably seem spammy to add a list.

Thanks for your response. My client has a specific group of core services (key phrases) that need to be featured. They only thing I can think of, is to create multiple versions of the same content for each area targeted and add geo-modifiers to the static urls and related on-page areas. However, I was hoping to find alternative and effective methods which would avoid spinning the content.

I would create further sub pages providing that your static URLs are not overly long in length already.

New site migration (multiple sites into one + new domain)
Hi, I have read so many very helpful guides and experiences from you guys that will greatly help me but I have a few questions please. Our company has 3 sites, the main site and 2 sites for different product ranges: BrandProductName.com (main site - DA = 22 raking well for product name) Productname2.com (DA = 10 ranking very well for product name and little competition) BrandProductName3.com (DA = 10 poor ranking) We wish to bring all the sites into one with categories for the 3 different product. The main site is an e-commerece site whereas the other 2 are not (currently). On top of this as the main domain has one of the product names in it they wish to change the domain to be just Brandname.com. So the plan is to combine site 2 and 3 into site 1 and change that domain name. As you can imagine this is going to be quite a job. I am fairly happy with the steps required (having read all the guides and migrated many sites in the past) but with the added domain name change this is a little daunting. So my questions are: Should I merge the 3 sites into 1 and then changed the domain at a later point? Should I change the domain of the main site first and then merge site 2 and 3 in later? Should I just do it all together? Or based on the data i have provided do you disagree with the plan, what would you recommend? We are not in a massive rush to complete all of this so we have the time to plan and execute this when we are fully ready. Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Schema Markup for Multiple Locations
I am reaching out to see if I correctly set up Schema Markup on our website for multiple locations. Our company has HQ in Little Chute WI but we have 6 other office locations. We have a separate page for each office within our website. I inserted ProfessionalService Schema Markup, using GTM. I used the address of our HQ Little Chute office on all pages besides the 6 pages that have different office locations. I then individually set up unique ProfessionalService Schema Markup for the 6 locations with their unique location addresses. Did I do this correctly? Thanks

Will a GEO Localization site create thousands of duplicates?
Hi mozzers, We are about to launch a new site and right now I am worried that this new site may create thousands of duplicate content which will harm all the SEO that has been done in the last few years. Here is a situation: You land on the example.com/Los-angeles page (geo located) but if you modify URI to example.com/chico then a pop up appears and ask you for the location you want to be in (pop up attached). When choosing chico the URI switches to example.com/chico?franchise=chico instead of /chico only. This site has over 40 different microsites so my question are all these arguments ?franchise=city going to be indexed and create thousands of dups? or are we safe because this geo localization happens thanks to javascript? Thanks! GopRinh.png

Duplicate Titles caused by multiple variations of same URL
Hi. Can you please advise how I can overcome this issue. Moz.com crawle is indicating I have 100's of Duplicate Title tag errors. However this is caused because many URL's have been indexed multiple times in Google. For example. www.abc.com

Blocking poor quality content areas with robots.txt
I found an interesting discussion on seoroundtable where Barry Schwartz and others were discussing using robots.txt to block low quality content areas affected by Panda. http://www.seroundtable.com/google-farmer-advice-13090.html The article is a bit dated. I was wondering what current opinions are on this. We have some dynamically generated content pages which we tried to improve after panda. Resources have been limited and alas, they are still there. Until we can officially remove them I thought it may be a good idea to just block the entire directory. I would also remove them from my sitemaps and resubmit. There are links coming in but I could redirect the important ones (was going to do that anyway). Thoughts?

Could targeting 2 geographic locations decrease rankings?
Hello, I think that us targeting 2 different geographic locations (San Francisco, CA and Salt Lake City, UT) is negatively effecting the rank of some of our main keywords. My evidence for this: Since December our main keyword (NLP) dropped in ranking for nlpca(dot)com from about 19th to about 40th. This is about when we started to really target 2 different locations. Other main keywords dropped a lot as well, like the important term "NLP Training" Also, our name, nlpca(dot)com indicates NLP California (CA stands for California in Google) The other day we bolded a sentence with the words "Salt Lake City, Utah" at the top of our content and in one of Google's Databases (the one I was looking at) we dropped in rankings for "NLP California" where we used to be completely sitelinked (where we took up a lot of space at the top of the search). Also, we shot up to 1st on my datacenter for both "NLP Utah" and "NLP Salt Lake City". At the same time, our rankings for the term "NLP" dropped off the map. It has come back up, but we've also targeted California again. A lot of our anchor text has the word "California" in it. We're thinking about building a separate site for Utah and just linking to it from the California website when we need to. Does it sound to you, in your experience, that targeting both locations in our case is what's causing a decrease in rankings? Thank you!

Google Places, Multiple locations best practice
What is the best practice with having multiple locations in Google Places. Does having multiple Google Places set up for each business have a big effect on local rankings for the individual areas? Should I use the home page for the website listed on each page or is it better to have a specific landing page for each Google Places listing? Any other tips? Thanks, Daniel
