Advise / Help on Bad Link Removals
-
Hey everyone.
Im new to the community and new to backlinks - hence the question to the community today.
I would like help understanding options and work load around back links and removing them.
I have a client with over 8000 back links as a few years ago he paid someone about £10 to boost his rankings by adding thousands of backlinks.
We fear this is having a bad effect on their site and rankings organically as 90% of these back links have a spam score of over 50% and also no follows. My questions to the community (if you could be so kind to share) are:
1. Whats the best way to decide if a Backlink is worth keeping or removing
2. Is there a tool to decide this or assist with this somewhere on the internet?Ive had advise stating if its not hurting the page we should keep it. However, again...
How do I know what damage each Backlink is causing to the domain?I appriciate anyones time to offer some advice to a novice looking to clear these
-
Thank you for the kind response. Always a pleasure helping other marketers and business owners.
As you disavow backlinks, google (or any other search engine where you disavow them) will not calculate the links when ranking your sites, but they will still be present where posted and will show up when researched on sites like Moz, SemRush, Ahrefs, etc.
The backlinks are not removed from Moz because the list of the disavowed links are stored on the database of the search engine to be used by them. For future disavowing you can check the newly-added links or filter the full site backlinks list with the disavowed links list.
You can find the disavow links tool in the search console/webmaster tools of the 2 main search engines: Google and Bing.
If you need help with the disavow process for your site, feel free to let us know.

Firstly, Thank you for such an insightful breakdown of how you would manage back links. Very useful.
I had heard that If we disavow a backlink that the backlink would still show in MOZ?
Is that true? I only know of Google Disavow, is there another way, platform or program you would advise to use? and how do I get it so that once Disavowed, the backlink no longer shows on our results? -
The quality of a backlink is based on several factors, with the main being:
- Domain Authority
- Page Authority
- Spam Score
- Relevancy
For the first 3 measurements you can get an estimate through the Moz Backlink Checker and it will help you filter damaging domains. Firstly you will need to focus more on the Spam Score, which is based on several factors calculated by Moz. Low Domain Authority and Page Authority aren't on itself a reason to disavow a backlink, but along with a high spam score or is posted on a page with irrelevant content then it can do more harm than good. My personal choice is disavowing most of the backlinks with a spam score of 50-70% and higher, and most of the backlinks with a low DA/PA and a spam score of over 20%.
Relevancy is the most difficult to maintain because it requires you to manually inspect every link and check their content. If your website is regarding construction and you have built backlinks on a gucci bags vendor it will do nothing to improve your rankings, or even harm them.
The geo-location of the site where the backlink is posted is very important for some businesses as well, given that they operate within a certain region. If you're operating within the US there would be no point in having backlinks in Italian or Chinese sites, and ranking on those regions, and from my experience it tends to lower rankings in the origin country. Backlinks on sites without a specific geo-location are fine though.
When selecting which backlinks to disavow you will need to be very careful not to disavow backlinks that are useful to your site and all the above factors need to be taken into consideration altogether.

Multiple similar links without the penguin?
Hi, I´m working with a site where clients proudly will publish a link to us as sort of a sign/partner symbol for using our services. Potentially we could have thousands or at least hundreds of links pointing to us and we could tailor/provide snippets for the links that clients can use on their site. I´m part of a team that just started working with this site and I realize this is a great opportunity that has not yet been exploited. I´m also a little paranoid that this tactic might be picked up by the penguin or that google sees it as black hat if not done wisely ? But links will only come from respectable business sites although ranging from different genres both really big and small.

Today links are mostly leading to our frontpage from our clients but I would like to tailor links so that each client could link to a page that is targeted on the keyword/service they have been using (and awarded diploma for) I think this would serve both the client and our SEO better ? I would really appreciate suggestions and comments on how to approach this best! Here is my plan so far, trying to make good/right use of the opportunity without offending google:
-Most links will be through a logo/sign that shows the award/diploma earned through our service.
I think the "alt" -tag should include both our company brand name and the service/target keyword for the page it´s leading to. -We could also provide a short text describing the earned award and our brand name and this whole text would also lead to the same page on our site.
...I guess using only the targeted keyword as anchor -link within the text would be a bad idea? -Where possible I would also like to customize this short text a little for each client (although that will be hard and only possible to some degree). As we provide "link material" for the client to include on their site, would it be wise to have them use an image that is hosted on our site or send them the image so they can publish that instead? Grateful for any feedback on this! Thanks!0 -

I'm seeing thousands of no-follow links on spam sites. Can you help figure it out?
I noticed that we are receiving thousands of links from many different sites that are obviously disguised as something else. The strange part is that some of them are legitimate sites when you go to the root. I would say 99% of the page titles read something like : 1 Hour Loan Approval No Credit Check Vermont, go cash advance - africanamericanadaa.com. Can someone please help me? Here are some of the URL's we are looking at: http://africanamericanadaa.com/genialt/100-dollar-loans-for-people-with-no-credit-colorado.html http://muratmakara.com/sickn/index.php?recipe-for-cone-06-crackle-glaze http://semtechblog.com/tacoa/index.php?chilis-blue-raspberry-margarita http://wesleygcook.com/rearc/guaranteed-personal-loans-oregon.html

Is linking out to different websites with the same C-Block IP bad for SEO?
Many SEOs state that getting (too many) links from the same C-Block IP is bad practice and should be avoided. Is this also applicable if one website links out to different websites with the same C-Block IP? Thus, website A, B and C (on the same server) link to website D (different server) could be seen as spam but is this the same when website D links to website A, B and C?

competitor sites link to a considerable amount of irrelevant sites/nonsense sites that seem to score high with regard to domain authority
According to my recent SEOmoz links analysis, my competitor sites link to a considerable amount of irrelevant sites/nonsense sites that seem to score high with regard to domain authority... e.g. wedding site linking to a transportation attorney's website. Aother competitor site has an overall of 2 million links, most of which are seemingly questionable index sites or forums to which registration is unattainable. I recently created a 301 redirect, and my external links have yet to be updated to my new domain name in SEOmoz. Yet, by comparing my previous domain authority rank with those of the said competitor sites, the “delta” is relatively marginal. The SEOmoz rank is 21 whereas the SEOmoz ranks of two competitor sites 30 and 33 respectively. The problem is, however, is to secure a good SERP for the most relevant terms with Google… My Google pagerank was “3” prior to the 301 redirect. I worked quite intensively so as to receive a pagerank only to discover that it had no affect at all on the SERP. Therefore, I took a calculated risk in changing to a domain name that translates from non-latin characters, as the site age is marginal, and my educated guess is that the PR should rebound within 4 weeks, however, I would like to know as to whether there is a way to transfer the pagerank to the new domain… Does anyone have any insight as to how to go about and handling this issue?

Do backlinks with good anchor text from bad sites help?
Hi, In the Netherlands, the SEO competition for terms like loans is very competitive. I see a website in this industry that seems to be doing very well based on links with good anchor text from sites that seem quite worthless to me, such as: http://www.online-colleges-helper.com/ and http://www.alohapath.com/ My question is: is it worth pursuing this type of links? I assume these must be paid links, or am I wrong? I'd really rather not go down this route but I don't want to be outranked by someone who is using these types of links... Many thanks in advance for any type of insight! Annemieke
