Two high ranking pages instantly dropped from index - no manual penalty notification
-
We are facing an issue where two of our major rankings pages have just completely disappeared from search results.
This has happened in the last 24 - 48 hours and there has been no changes made to the site. From what we can tell, it's only impacted two pages (but two very important category pages).
I have double and triple checked all standard indexing protocols - Search Console URL inspection says the pages are fine to crawl and index. URLs have been requested to re-index but nothing has worked.
This would have me to believe it could be a manual action yet there are no notifications in Search Console and we are listed as 'No issues detected' in all versions of our web property.
Can anyone else think what could be the reason?

Those URLs don't index because they result in 301 redirects. Google only indexes the redirect destination URL, this is to cut down on people clicking SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Positions) and then getting redirected (slow) instead of heading straight to the web-page
https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/swingsets (no hyphen) 301 redirects to https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/swing-sets (with a hyphen)
https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/trampolines (ends with "s", pluralised) 301 redirects to https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/trampoline (non-plural)
You can see Google has indexed the redirect destination URLs here
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=site%3Avulyplay.com%2Fen-AU%2Fswing-sets
and here
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=site%3Avulyplay.com/en-AU/trampoline
-
We have received no notifications for anything.
The URLs in question are -
https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/trampolines
https://www.vulyplay.com/en-AU/swingsets
It's impossible to know what the best course of action is. We don't know if they have been manually reviewed or if a error has occurred or what.
Worst timing for this to happen as well.

Yes, they will notify you.... but.... they must be able to find your contact information.
If they notify you, they will provide information about the infringing resource and they will let you know who complained.

Thank you this information EGOL.
Do you know if you get notified if a DMCA is filed against you?
Still no notifications at all and no manual actions reported under any of our web properties.

Here are some of the many things that can cause a page to disappear from the SERPs.
** Another webmaster grabbed your page and published it on his domain and now he is ranking for your keywords instead of you.
** You grabbed another webmaster's page and published it on your site and now that page on your site has disappeared from the SERPs.
** You have built or received links on other websites with anchor text that matches the keywords that you are no longer ranking for. (a page falling from the SERPs for this usually has a number of exact match keyword links)
** Your page has text or an image or other intellectual property on it that belongs to another person and they filed DMCA to Google. Now your page is not ranking.
** Another person has filed a false DMCA to Google that accuses you of taking their content.
** You have accidentally placed a no index for this page on your website.
** A hacker has placed a no index for this page on your website.
** These pages are relatively new and are in-and-out of the SERPs like many new pages do.
** You have done (intentionally or innocently) some sin and now Google has whacked your page.
Usually one of the above will account for a page missing from the SERPs. There are other reasons... but the above usually nail it. Rarely, Google will temporarily lose track of a page (really rare but can happen).

Why do I have so many extra indexed pages?
Stats- Webmaster Tools Indexed Pages- 96,995 Site: Search- 97,800 Pages Sitemap Submitted- 18,832 Sitemap Indexed- 9,746 I went through the search results through page 28 and every item it showed was correct. How do I figure out where these extra 80,000 items are coming from? I tried crawling the site with screaming frog awhile back but it locked because of so many urls. The site is a Magento site so there are a million urls, but I checked and all of the canonicals are setup properly. Where should I start looking?

I have 2 keywords I want to target, should I make one page for both keywords or two separate pages?
My team sells sailboats and pontoon boats all over the country. So while they are both boats, the target market is two different types of people... I want to make a landing page for each state so if someone types in "Pontoon Boats for sale in Michigan" or "Pontoon boats for sale in Tennessee," my website will come up. But I also want to come up if someone is searching for sailboats for sale in Michigan or Tennessee (or any other state for that matter). So my question is, should I make 1 page for each state that targets both pontoon boats and sailboats (total of 50 landing pages), or should I make two pages for each state, one targeting pontoon boats and the other sailboats (total of 100 landing pages). My team has seen success targeting each state individually for a single keyword, but have not had a situation like this come up yet.

Pages are Indexed but not Cached by Google. Why?
Here's an example: I get a 404 error for this: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.qjamba.com/restaurants-coupons/ferguson/mo/all But a search for qjamba restaurant coupons gives a clear result as does this: site:http://www.qjamba.com/restaurants-coupons/ferguson/mo/all What is going on? How can this page be indexed but not in the Google cache? I should make clear that the page is not showing up with any kind of error in webmaster tools, and Google has been crawling pages just fine. This particular page was fetched by Google yesterday with no problems, and even crawled again twice today by Google Yet, no cache.

Best tips for getting a video page to rank?
We have a video for our company, located here: http://www.imageworkscreative.com/imageworks-creative-video It's an overview of our company and the services we offer. We'd like to get this page ranking, but we haven't had much luck so far. Our Youtube account does better, but I'm looking for some things we can do on or offsite to get this page to rank. Any tips would be appreciated!

Home page not being indexed
Hi Moz crew. I have two sites (one is a client's and one is mine). They are both Wordpress sites and both are hosted on WP Engine. They have both been set up for a long time, and are "on-page" optimized. Pages from each site are indexed, but Google is not indexing the homepage for either site. Just to be clear - I can set up and work on a Wordpress site, but am not a programmer. Both seem to be fine according to my Moz dashboard. I have Webmaster tools set up for each - and as far as I can tell (definitely not an exper in webmaster tools) they are okay. I have done the obvious and checked that the the box preventing Google from crawling is not checked, and I believe I have set up the proper re-directs and canonicals. Thanks in advance! Brent

Certain Product Pages Not Indexing
Hey All, We discovered an issue where new product pages on our site were not getting indexed because a "noindex" tag was inadvertently being added to section when those pages were created. We removed the noindex tag in late April and some of the pages that had not been previously indexed are now showing up, but others are still not getting indexed and I'd appreciate some help on why this could be. Here is an example of a page that was not in the index but is now showing after removal of noindex: http://www.cloud9living.com/san-diego/gaslamp-quarter-food-tour And here is an example of a page that is still not showing in the index: http://www.cloud9living.com/atlanta/race-a-ferrari UPDATE: The above page is now showing after I manually submitted it in WMT. I had previously submitted another page like a month ago and it was still not indexing so I thought the manual submission was a dead end. However, it just so happens that the above URL just had its Page Title and H1 updated to something more specific and less duplicative so I am currently running a test to see if that's the problem with these pages not indexing. Will update this soon. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Two sites, two domains, two brands, 98% same content
There are two affiliated brick & mortar retail stores moving into e-commerce. For non-marketing reasons separate e-commerce websites are desired. The two brands are based in separate (nearby) cities in the same Canadian province. Although the store name and branding will be different, the content on the site will either be near duplicates or exact duplicates. The more I look into this on Google and SEOmoz QA, the more I am concerned about the SEO implications of this. SEOmoz QA: Multiple cities/regions websites - duplicate content? "So, yes, because you are offering the same services at second location, you are thinking correctly about the need to rewrite all content so it's not a duplicate of site #1." Duplicate content - Webmaster Tools Help "However, in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic… In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we’ll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results. ... Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results." Unfortunately, I would say there's very little chance that rewritten content will happen in the foreseeable future. With that said, I'd be greatly appreciative of the concerns and remedies that the SEOmoz community has to offer (even if they're for future use). Thanks in advance.
