Google Is Linking to Wrong Local Page - How To Change?
-
Hi All
Thanks in advance for any support. I've setup two "local" pages to target the next door town for one of my clients.
One page targets "t shirt printing" and one page targets "embroidered workwear"
However when I search for "embroidered workwear town in question" google connects the search to my t-shirt printing page and not the embroidered workwear page. Would it be possible to advise on what I need to do for the correct page to be linked to the search term?
Here is a link to the search term in question
**https://tinyurl.com/vvgr5r5 **
and the page that we would like to appear in the results, not our tshirt printing page
https://tinyurl.com/s77md9o Thanks in advance for any help

You're welcome. Good luck to you in the work ahead!

Hi Miriam
Thank you so much for your detailed response.
You have exactly identified the scenario and I will work through the suggestions posted, this content I have inherited so will make a raft of changes as suggested
-
Thank you for bringing your scenario to the forum. So, as I understand it, your T-shirt page is ranking for the term you'd prefer your Embroidery page to rank for, in a city in which you're not physically located but to which you are adjacent. While it's always up to Google which page they feel is most relevant for a particular search term, here are some things I see when looking at these two pages:
-
You are duplicating content between the two pages. This speaks of a lack of effort on the part of the brand to build unique, high quality content for the customers. If you are going to create a unique page, create unique content for it.
-
I see in your menu that you have a section for "Locations". From your Contact Page, it looks like you have just one physical location in High Wycombe. Looking at this, what appears to have been the strategy here is to create dozens of pages for locations in which the business doesn't physically exist, but would like to serve. Unfortunately, as I look at these pages, I would have to say that these pages have been created for search engine rankings rather than for human visitors. There has been little effort put into making these valuable resources for people, and if the brand's only connection to these other cities is wanting to rank for them/sell to them, that's really not good enough inspiration for publishing something worthwhile. A better approach would be to evaluate whether the brand has any actual connection to these cities. For example, let's say the the company had a large commission to embroider the work uniforms for a famous commercial pottery studio in York. You could then create a page about the job the brand did for this studio in York, complete with images, videos, text, and testimonials for the company. This would be a page that would have a real reason for existing, instead of the present state of these "location" pages that have been created. Google is likely viewing this entire collection of pages as being of low quality.
3) Something odd is happening at the top of your Marlow Embroidery page. It's as if you've got a Title Tag in the text at the top of it (instead of in your code) reading: Embroidered Workwear Marlow | Embroidery Marlow | Workwear Marlow. This is not human-style language and doesn't belong in the customer-focused text on your page. To Google, this could look like an attempt to over-optimize the page in a spammy way.
Overall, the brand isn't taking an optimum approach to marketing itself to communities beyond its city borders. If this were my client, I would be advising the brand to discover if there are real relationships they can build with customers in other cities so that they have something useful and interesting to publish. The danger of continuing with the present approach is that it could easily be pushed down by a competitor who is willing to invest in higher quality content. The duplicate content issue needs to be addressed, and the Marlow Embroidery page ranking issue might be sorted out if you do this and earn a few good new links to it, but from just a quick look at the site, this brand may have greater overall needs than this, given the current state of their content strategy.
There's a very good opportunity for your agency to get this client onto a better path. Recommended reading: https://moz.com/blog/rank-beyond-location
Hope this helps and good luck!

How to tell Google My Business what area is local to my company?
Hello Mozers I've been stumped by the changes in the interface with Google My Business. I used to be able to set up the area for which I wanted a business to cover. Now I can't find anyway to tell Google. The company I work for is in St Albans and our main workload is London. It would be helpful if I could actually control what Google Local sees as Local for my company, i.e. to encompass central London which is only 19 miles away. Can someone give me an idiots guide has to how to tell Google the area I'd like our local listing to cover? Thanks

Google Places - Remove Completely vs. Permanently Closed?
This is a bit confusing to explain so bear with me please. We have a client that used to have an old law practice with a partner. The site and backlinks were very large and it had a lot of domain authority. It also had a very large citation profile and history. The two lawyers have since split, but there remains multiple Google Places listings out there for the old partnership. We have fixed the one showing the old business practice name, but not the one that he setup for his personal name. One of the biggest hassles is that the old location he setup has his attorney name in the actual listing. The issue is that we cannot close the old listing (we tried this), as it comes up permanently closed when you Google his name. If you search for his new Law Firm, the correct business listing that we have set up will show. The new listing also includes his name and has over 50 five star reviews. We hoped that the large amount of legitimate reviews would get rid of or at least suppress the old listing, but it is not happening. So I am a bit confused as to what to do. If we close the old listing Google shows the red "permanently closed" listing when you Google his name. We cannot update the old listing information to show his new address as then it will compete with the new listing that we setup that shows all the positive reviews. The old listing was not created by us, and the new one was. The new one shows when you search for his Law Firm name in Google, but not for his personal name i.e "NAME HERE ATTORNEY" or "HIS NAME and LOCATION" Interested to hear your thoughts. The only way I can think to fix this is to contact Google directly and see if there is a way to permanently delete the listing from Google maps, but I am not aware that this is possible.

Google Local Result- Competitor Ranks without an Address. Why is this happening?
My client is in a fairly competitive local market and there is a competitor who has ranked locally for around 2 years, but they have no actual address on their Google business listing. Just city and state. The listing is always top three and it does have their website listed, but directions aren't even available as there is actual no address. The listing is extremely keyword dense (basically spam but they actually created a business with the spam name). Citation Example: Keyword dense business name, phone number, city and state only Have you seen this? Can you explain why this is happening? Is this against the rules/anything I can do? Thanks!

What to do with duplicate Listings for Business in Moz Local Tool?
Hi Everyone! Just another newbie Local SEO looking for a solution. I was searching my business listing in Moz Local and it returned two addresses.

Listing #1: 925 B Street #402 San Diego, CA 92101, 67623
Listing #2: 925 B St, #402, San Diego, CA, 92101 Do I need to remove the listing with two zip codes showing up? (I don't see any of my profiles showing up with two zip codes though.) Listing #2 is accurate yet the local moz tool tells me that my Google+ page is 69% complete. How is it possible that Listing #1 scored a 97% complete on Google+? Would you recommend putting the suite number in Address Line 1 or separated in Line 2? Does it even matter? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!0 -
Can't Change My G+ Pages Address?
Our zipcode is wrong on our Google Plus page for one of our offices. Exactly, one month ago I corrected it, but it immediately reverted to the wrong one. Then, I think I read the change can take 4 weeks...we'll it still hasn't changed. Two weeks ago, someone from Google Places even called and I told him to change it manually, he said he would...still not changed. What can I do to get this zip code corrected? Thanks, Ruben

Local Listings SEO: Which multi-location retailers are doing a super job with local listings? I'm also interested in finding retailers who are using schema.org microdata format to structure their store-level data.
Do you know of any enterprise level restaurant or retail chains that are doing a great job with their local listings content? Just looking for some links/examples of best practice executions. Also, I'm very interested in finding retailers or other multi-location businesses that are using schema.org microdata format to structure their local store location data.

Google won't index my site?
Hi, I've just signed up and am new to SEO. I placed my site live around mid December 2013. Initially I got 2 pages indexed but now not even they show up for site:www.traditional-cleaning.co.uk. According the Moz analytics I have 3 pages with duplicate content which are: http://traditional-cleaning.co.uk/http://traditional-cleaning.co.uk/index.htmhttp://traditional-cleaning.co.ukProblem is I have no idea how to fix this, don't know whether Google isn't indexing my site because of this and generally am a bit stuck! Can anyone have a quick look at my site and give me a push in the right direction?
