I can see competitors ranking for certain long-tail keywords but cannot find them on web pages. What am I missing?
-
Hi there. I'm pretty new to SEO and I've been doing a fair bit of training but there is one aspect I have yet to grasp. When I carry out keyword research, I get all these results and I understand the metrics. What I'm not getting is, when a competitor is ranking highly for say "where can I buy fresh turkeys", I assume that that phrase must appear somewhere on the page, but it doesn't. I realise I'm just not thinking about this in the right way. Can anyone offer clarification, please?
Kind regards,
Bruce

Bruce,
No, the phrase does not have to appear on the page and lots of factors determine how a page might rank for the phrase without it being on the page, even things like location of searcher and time of year may influence which site ranks for such long tail terms.
A page might say "I buy fresh turkeys where my grandmother lives" and because of other factors on the domain, it might rank for your search. Or maybe, "they have fresh turkeys where I buy my alien abduction books" and something about the domain helps that page rank for your term.
Things get very squirrely way down at the end of the long tail keywords list. As you learn more, you'll probably begin popping your head up a little higher on that list and figuring out how to beat the competitors, rather than trying to go for the least competitive terms. But that's OK, everyone starts there.

Hi Don. Thank you so much for your reply and advice.

Google's algorithms are smart enough to know what content is on page. If the page mentions fresh turkeys for sale, your search term should return the site without that keyword on page. It is the purpose of that search to expose places where fresh turkeys could be bought. ?
Many long tail keywords are just phrases and sometimes those phrases make no sense for humans to read. So if your force the term on page it may not allow the rest of the content to be completely coherent. This is not good. Content should be written for human consumption first and foremost.
The best advice is to produce content that is thorough, education and as complete as possible. Then those of the cuff phrases, "fresh turkey near me" "who sells fresh turkey" "fresh turkey stores" will populate search results without those phrases being present on page.
Thanks,
Don Silvernail

I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website is doing on google ranking
Hello, I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website (flyhy.co) is doing on google ranking and I have no clue why even though I have been doing my homework regarding SEO. Just a bit of background, I have created a new website about 6 months ago for the paragliding community, the primary goal is to provide a platform for people to publish their ads (osclass), but also to provide some interesting reviews and tools to help paragliders chose their wing. We have been putting a lot of effort to provide a nice user experience and tio build the tools mentioned above. Our main channel to connect with the community is Facebook, and we have been quite active there. I have looked at many SEO articles and I made sure the website provides a good UX, the URLs are SEO friendly, good meta data, etc. Also have been using the google search console and analytics to monitor all of this. But here is the thing, all these does not seem to change anything in our ranking for important keywords such as "paraglider for sale", "paragliding equipment", etc. We seem to only rank (looking at Google’s keyword tool) for very specific wing model names that people have mentioned in their ads. I have ran out of ideas on how to improve our SEO !!!!!! I know the website is only 6 months old, but by now we should get some results. As an example, I will mention one our main website competitors: www.paraglidingequipment.org. OK the URL is pretty obvious and this website ranks in page #1 for "paragliding equipment" (but also for "paraglider for sale" and other paragliding related key phrases). OK there is the URL (paraglidingequipment.org), but I thought nowadays google bots are smarter than just that. The website is 1 year old (so not really much older than us, and was ranking high anyway even 6 months ago). The website looks like it was clearly made by one person and then quickly just left it running, so no content has been added (except for people putting their ads), there is almost no activity on the Facebook account. I have run some test such as "pagespeed insights" and we both rank the same. On "seositecheckup.com", we are clearly better with more 10 points. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is going on? Have I missed a very important aspect of SEO? Is our website somehow compromising the robots crawling (although I can see about 80 pages have been already indexed in google search console)? I know content is king, but in paraglidingequipment.org the only content I see are ads, and we have ads and other interesting (ie reviews and tools) for paragliders. To conclude, I am basically completely clueless of what to do to rank at least on the first couple of pages of google for the key phrases above. I need help. Hichem. PS: in Moz bar our score is non existing (PA=1,DA=10), on paraglidingequipment.org (PA=23,DA=15). So it looks that essentially we are not apparent on the web! PSS: We have also tried to build some backlinks on few important paragliding community websites.

How can Floost outrank us?
I did a search for "Bella Thorne Jimmy Choo Maylen" and the first result that comes up is "http://floost.com/yournextshoes-post-bella-thorne-in-jimmy-choo-maylen-booties-hot-or-not-2680653". Basically they just have our site in some sort of frame, and I can't even see our site among the other search results. How do they manage to outrank us? I never submitted our site to Floost, but normally I don't think they should hurt our SEO as it's just a content aggregator. What do you think? aO6bBSU

Analyzing Back Links - Says site A has back link to Site B but when I look at site B I can't find any back link to Site A. Why?
I am new to SEO Moz - It looks like incredible technology. I was playing around with different websites to see where they had back linked to see how it works. Looked at a site called racingsecretsexposed [dot] come and it said that it had dozens of links to www.ndesignstudio.com such as: ndesign-studio.com/blog/best-wordpress-sites?replytocom=893 with link anchor text "laying horses" but when I do a search for the company name, or the anchor text "laying horses", or the owner of the company's name on ndesignstudio.com - nothing appears. Why not? Isn't the back link anchored by the text laying horses, which should link back to the racing secrets website? Thanks

Link to landing page or home page
Ok, so I've been doing a bit of link research and found that most of our competitors use anchor text to link to their homepage on their site and not a specific landing page. Our current strategy is to link to the correct landing page depending on the anchor to get these to rank, as opposed to getting our homepage to rank for different keywords. If that makes sense. The main reason I can think of to send all links to the homepage is that it would increase the domain authority of the site as a whole. Instead of spreading the links to certain pages depending on the anchor text. It would also give your one page a greater chance to rank for all keywords? Quick example I am a site that sells sports clothes. I have 2 main pages from my homepage: Homepage Football Rugby _Should I link to the football page for all links anchored with "football", and all linked anchored with "rugby" to the rugby page OR should I anchor all links including "rugby" and "football" to the homepage? _ What do you think is the best strategy? Thanks in advance.
