Can't figure out how my competitor has so many links
-
I suspect something possibly black-hat is going on with the amount of inbound links for www.pacificlifestylehomes.com ( http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.pacificlifestylehomes.com ) mainly because they have such a large volume of links (for my industry) with their exact targeted keyword.
Can anyone help clear this up for me?

Spend your time and money focused on generated incredible CONTENT not buying links.
You or someone who works for the site can be reaching out to become a solid member of the housing community. Newspapers, government agencies, builders and others all write about housing. Find out what the current hot topics are and write about them.
Don't write the standard "I need a 500 word SEO article" type of internet junk. Forget about your company. Write the best, most sincerely helpful article you can think of regarding a housing topic. "The Importance of Researching Local Schools Before Buying a Home", "Building a Truly Green Home", "Home Improvements that Add Value", etc.
Write an article that talks about something people will WANT to link to. Talk about something YOU would link to if you even found it on a competitor's site. The value of your competitors links were not that strong. I don't recall any links from DA 7x sites. You can earn those kind of links with a high quality article.

Ryan,
Thanks so much for this breakdown - those settings in OSE make sense and are very helpful. I wish I didn't have to buy links like they apparently did, but in the housing industry the bulk of organic links companies get are either branded to the company's name or they just say 'website'. Why can't everyone understand SEO??

Hi Christopher.
When using OSE, I always set the top filters as follows:
Show followed + 301 - I only wish to see followed links which help DA/PA
links from only external - internal links are not helpful for my backlink analysis
pages to pages on this root domain - usually I wish to see all links to the domain and not just links to the given page
and group by domain - usually I am trying to learn which domains are providing the link and do not need to see each individual link
Before applying the filter I notice the site has 4646 total links from 51 domains. That's an average of close to 100 links per domain. With a high link average it's common to find some site-wide links. Site-wide links muddy the waters a bit and make it difficult to see the links which offer value. You can work hard, obtain 50 links from 50 domains and then obtain one site-wide footer link from a 10k page forum site which has little value, but then your backlink profile will show 10,050 links from 51 domains.
With the above in mind I apply the filter and see this site only has links from 44 domains. That is not a large number. When I scanned the link I noticed a michigan.gov link which stood out, but when I tried to follow the link it is to a file. The Linkscape index upon which OSE is dependent had an issue with the last crawl of the web and some files showed links which are not actually there. This issue should be resolved during the next crawl.
Many of the remaining links appear to be from a network of classified ad sites. When I check the first OSE link www.vancouverclassifieds.com/ it shows the "Custom New Homes Portland" anchor text at the top of the page. As you can see from the backlink profile, this link appears on many of the other network classified sites. The site presents itself as a free classified ad site and I could not find anywhere which mentioned how to pay or otherwise receive an anchor link in that location. Either I missed something, or this site owner has a friend or otherwise paid someone to receive a link in that location.
As I look at other sites, the links seem to be paid links that are not otherwise obvious. They are links from sidebars such as found at http://oregoncatalyst.com/. There is no apparent reason for the link.
You could try contacting the sites and ask what you can do to earn a link like your competitor. The answer you receive may offer further clarity.

Competitor Black Hat Link Building?
Hello big-brained Moz folks, We recently used Open Site Explorer to compile a list of inbound linking domains to one of our clients, alongside domains linking to a major competitor. This competitor, APBSpeakers.com, is dominating the search results with many #1 rankings for highly competitive phrases, even though their onsite SEO is downright weak. This competitor also has exponentially more links(602k vs. 2.4k) and way more content(indexed pages) reported than any of their competitors, which seems physically impossible to me. Linking root domains are shown as 667 compared to 170 for our client, who has been in business for 10+ years. Taking matters a step further, linking domains for this competitor include such authoritative domains as: Cnn.com TheGuardian.com PBS.org HuffingtonPost.com LATimes.com Time.com CBSNews.com NBCNews.com Princeton.edu People.com Sure, I can see getting a few high profile linking domains but the above seems HIGHLY suspicious to me. Upon further review, I searched CNN, The Guardian and PBS for all variations of this competitors name and domain name and found no immediate mentions of their name. I smell a rat and I suspect APB is using some sort behind-the-scenes programming to make these "links" happen, but I have no idea how. If this isn't the case, they must have a dedicated PR person with EXTREMELY strong connections to secure this links, but even this seems like a stretch. It's conceivable that APB is posting comments on all of the above sites, along with links, however, I was under the impression that all such posts were NoFollow and carried no link juice. Also, paid advertisements on the above sites should be NoFollow as well, right? Anyway, we're trying to get to the bottom of this issue and determine what's going on. If you have any thoughts or words of wisdom to help us compete with these seemingly Black Hat SEO tactics, I'd sure love to hear from you. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it very much. Eric

How authentic is a dynamic footer from bots' perspective?
I have a very meta level question. Well, I was working on dynamic footer for the website: http://www.askme.com/, you can check the same in the footer. Now, if you refresh this page and check the content, you'll be able to see a different combination of the links in every section. I'm calling it a dynamic footer here, as the values are absolutely dynamic in this case. **Why are we doing this? **For every section in the footer, we have X number of links, but we can show only 25 links in each section. Here, the value of X can be greater than 25 as well (let's say X=50). So, I'm randomizing the list of entries I have for a section and then picking 25 elements from it i.e random 25 elements from the list of entries every time you're refreshing the page. Benefits from SEO perspective? This will help me exposing all the URLs to bots (in multiple crawls) and will add page freshness element as well. **What's the problem, if it is? **I'm wondering how bots will treat this as, at any time bot might see us showing different content to bots and something else to users. Will bot consider this as cloaking (a black hat technique)? Or, bots won't consider it as a black hat technique as I'm refreshing the data every single time, even if its bot who's hitting me consecutively twice to understand what I'm doing.

Goddady's Domain Masking and 301's
I have a client who's 7 domains and single website (instantpages®) exists within the clutches of GoDaddy. They own 6 kewyord rich domain names that 301 redirect with masking to the main branded domain. In effect, what this provides is the ability to add a title tag and meta description for a keyword rich domain name that displays content through an iframe. So really it's not duplicate content but this practice sets off my spidey sense that this is not a best practice regarding SEO. I want to suggest for the client to drop the idea of masking and do a straight 301 redirect to main branded domain. I'm sure that is fine but these domains are Not similar variations but actually vary widely: massage-city.com, city-massage.com, city-acupuncture.com, acupuncture-city.com, city-chiropractic.com, chiropractic-city.com etc ---- Doesn't Google frown on redirecting 6 domains to a single domain if they vary widely? Words of wisdom appreciated.

Link directories question
Looking over a clients site and they have a bunch of link directory links that seem very skeptical to me, but the mozrank and authority seem to be ok on the home page. One directory is addlinkzfree and they have the same template and layout as a few other directories this client has. Link page has no juice whatsover, but home page has PA 54, MR 5.04 and root domain is DA 45. At first glance this would appear to be respectable numbers right? But the title of the directory and multitude of links lead me to think its nothing but a link farm. Should I advise the client to run and try to remove links from these type sites even though home page has decent scores? Im of the mindset that anything diredctory with links, free, partners etc in title need be avoided. Would appreciate any backup on this or am I just being paranoid?

Question #1 - My Cherry's Popped!
I recently acquired rights to a URL that is one of our keywords. Instead of developing a landing page with that URL and then only linking it back to the company root, I was thinking about adding a link within the company's global nav that pushes to this new URL (and new page content of course). Are there any Pros or Cons to doing it that way? Thank you so much!

Getting Credit for your own inbound links
Good afternoon, I have been comparing competitors with the Open Site Explorer looking at their inbound links. I have noticed that they have been getting credit for their own inbound links within their site. Is there something I am doing wrong as inbound links on my site aren't getting found? Could this have anything to do with Webmaster tools? Thanks in advance, SEO_123

Link Building with links in footer of Word Press Themes- Is This BLack Hat??
I See lots of free word press themes with links in footer like Kids Headphones | Colombia Classifieds | Broadway Tickets Is this a valid white hat link building method? What if the theme looked like a particular industry and the links related to the industry would that be better?
