Link anchor text: only useful for pages linked to directly or distributed across site?
-
As a SEO I understand that link anchor text for the focus keyword on the page linked to is very important, but I have a question which I can not find the answer to in any books or blogs, namely: does inbound anchor text 'carry over' to other pages in your site, like linkjuice?
For instance, if I have a homepage focusing on keyword X and a subpage (with internal links to it) focusing on keyword Y. Does is then help to link to the homepage with keyword Y anchor texts? Will this keyword thematically 'flow through' the internal link structure and help the subpage's ranking? In a broader sense: will a diverse link anchor text profile to your homepage help all other pages in your domain rank thematically?
Or is link anchor text just useful for the direct page that is linked to?
All views and experiences are welcome!
Kind regards,
Joost van Vught

Ahh ok sry misunderstood the question (my bad):
If you have a page (the one linked to with an anchor text) and this page contains do-follow links then some of the "value" (for the search phrase in question) will flow to the other pages. But! (there's always a but since only a small percentage of the value will flow, the value of the other pages are most likely to little to show up in any search result, since other pages will probably out weigh it in the SERP's.
In other words: Yes anchor text flows just like link-juice

Hi Rene, thanks for your contribution. I'm more than familiar the flow of link juice and authority throughout the website.... I'm wondering specifically if the external link 'anchor text' will flow to other pages on the site and thus load the entire site thematically...

A link passes link juice internally and externally. Since the link helps the Authority and Trust of the entire domain. If you have a link to a page and that page links to another page, then some of that link juice will flow from page one to page two.

This is a question I have struggled with and although i cannot prove it I would say yes.
I was making blogs to funnel pr and traffic to my main site. I was using a pyramid link strategy and at the bottom tier (yes they were spammy profile links but hey) I used my target keywords as anchor text all the way up. The result was a continual increase in rankings over time - since I kept blasting links to the bottom layers.
I did SEO for another of my sites the same way and this time used generic text on the bottom layers. It was easier but the progress in ranking was a tenth of the other site - both sites were in the same niche and had good onsite seo etc.
This observation led me to believe that Google uses incoming Anchor text to determine relevancy - perhaps they take the most common incoming link anchor text and tag that webpage with it to help classify it for relevancy. Onsite factors would be more important but I believe Google may use incoming anchor text to tag pages for relevancy.

SEO implications of off-site secure Donation page
Hi Mozzers, I have a non-profit client that defends wildlife and public lands in the western US. The huge website is currently not responsive so we are working on that. In the meantime, we will be making the Action pages (such as Donations, Sign Petition, Get Newsletter) pages responsive. This will be housed under a new domain. My question is, what are SEO best practices for doing this? Does it negatively impact SEO to have a visitor "booted" from a site to a second secure site? Does Google know that the Donation site is in fact fulfillment and is linked to the original site? Also, what about domain implications? Is it best to have the name of the non-profit in the domain or sub, like this: https://saveanimals.secure.com/donate? Thanks everyone!

Using hreflang for international pages - is this how you do it?
My client is trying to achieve a global presence in select countries, and then track traffic from their international pages in Google Analytics. The content for the international pages is pretty much the same as for USA pages, but the form and a few other details are different due to how product licensing has to be set up. I don’t want to risk losing ranking for existing USA pages due to issues like duplicate content etc. What is the best way to approach this? This is my first foray into this and I’ve been scanning the MOZ topics but a number of the conversations are going over my head,so suggestions will need to be pretty simple 🙂 Is it a case of adding hreflang code to each page and creating different URLs for tracking. For example:

Too many on page links
Hi I know previously it was recommended to stick to under 100 links on the page, but I've run a crawl and mine are over this now with 130+ How important is this now? I've read a few articles to say it's not as crucial as before. Thanks!

Links from swf file widely distributed?
Hello, I just realised that Google is listing as backlinks, links from swf games that we created and distributed widely. We never used this method to have backlinks but as we create the games and give them for free to other sites, we added a link back to our site, if the user who played the game want to visit us. But I am worried that this is interpreted as black hat seo, and this affected our ranking badly. Anyone had this kind of issue? How do you think we should be tackling this? Is this could be affected our site? Thanks for your help on this guys 😉

Using two 404 NOT FOUND pages
Hi all, I was wondering if any of you can advise whether it's no issue to use two separate custom 404 pages. The 404 pages would be different for different parts of the site. For instance, if you're on /community/ and you enter a non-existing page on: www.sample.com/community/example/ it would give you a different 404 page than someone who runs into a non existing page at: www.sample.com/definition/example/ Does anybody have experience with this and would this be fine?

Outbound link to PDF vs outbound link to page
If you're trying to create a site which is an information hub, obviously linking out to authoritative sites is a good idea. However, does linking to a PDF have the same effect? e.g Linking to Google's SEO starter guide PDF, as opposed to linking to a google article on SEO. Thanks!

Does the number of links on a page metric include repeated links?
Just wondering if the number of links on the page metric includes links that are repeated? So, if I had 100 links to one page would this count as 100 or 1 link?

If it's the former does this mean more links to one page adds weight? Thanks0
