Ranking on page 1 position 3 but hardley any visits
-
in one of my projects the expected vistors is around 23000 weve got the keyword onto the first page position 3 and weve only recieved 30 vistits this month, my qustion is why?
are the local searches from google analtics that tell you thier are 23000 searches for that keyword false
please can someone shed some light on this, my client is totally over the moon with his ranking but cant believe that hes only recieving 30 visits this month from what we thought was a million dollar keyword

I'll just add this post I wrote on SEOmoz a bit back - it talks about how rankings might not drive the traffic you expect:
-
Number of monthly searches + SERP rankings are important, but are not the only factors that can effect your click-through rate.
You might also need to take a look at your meta title & description - is it catchy & relevant? Or dull and spammy? What are the results around you like? If their copywriting is particularly stunning they may be stealing some potential clickers away from you each time.
Also, what are the paid search results like for this term? If there are loads of them you may be appearing further down the page than a 3rd place rank typically would. The same goes for blended or location-based searches (the maps and blended media results can push you right down the page)

Like the comment below, your are probably looking at broad.
Look at exact match and then calculate artound 8.5% to 9.8% of that search volume should be your clicks.
This is percentageis based on my KPI's from over 15 different websites and many many keywords. The average visits we are getting from a 3rd position keyword.

|I would also add that the estimates of traffic are also for top position. 1/1 And you maybe looking a broad match vs exact match. In my experience position 3 or 2 are not heavy traffic getters unless something is trending hot. I would look at your title tag relevancy and meta description that is pulled that could make or break clicks. Also it depends on what word for example the term apple may have thousands of searches and let say I get to pos 3 page 1 that doesn't mean I am going to get lots of traffic because people will look at title tag url and meta description and know I am not apple..

30 does sound fairly small based on the 23000 you've mentioned, and Nebraska's answer sounds like it may be on the money. Another thing to keep in mind is that actual clicks to a term are often a fraction of the amount of searches. EG: 23000 searches might equal 3000 clicks (random number). Also keep in mind that a term might have PPC results which could could be taking traffic. And the fact that you are number 3 (based on these numbers - only receives on avg 7% of traffic that view the result) is also probably playing a part. Then there's the whole localised/personalised search result aspect that may be influencing it somewhat.
-
Are you looking at broad match or exact match for the search volume? That is the most common error regarding traffic assumptions.

Improved keyword ranking but less traffic
Hello fellow mozzers! My collegue and I are a bit puzzled in regards to our recent website statistics. In november 2013, we upgraded the technological platform of our website to be fully HTML5 coded, and implemented the schema.org Products scheme to systematically tag all our products on the site. To prevent too much loss of visitors, we created a 301-redirect table from almost all our old URL's to the specific new ones, as we implemented a new URL structure as well. The first few months were bumpy as expected, making a huge drop in rankings before rising up again. Our keyword rankings are better then ever (60% of the keywords in top 3, average competition, 25% more on first SERP) but our number of visits dropped by about 10%. Our bounce rate went down from 20% to 14%, our returning visits are stable, but our new visitors stats dropped by 25% as well. This comparison was made between equal periods in the current year and last year, using organic data stats. (new technical platform vs. the old one) What could be the reason that our number of visits dropped 10% while our keyword ranking is better then ever? We don't have any manual penalties in GWT and can't understand why visits would drop so much while ranking improved. May it be so easy that there's just less search volume on our ranked content or does anyone have other ideas? Thank you all in advance!

Figuring Out the Source of "direct traffic" by looking at landing page parameters
I have a client who runs an e-commerce website, and I noticed that 40% of his traffic and 25% of his sales are all attributable to Direct Traffic. At first, I tried to solve this problem by tagging all of the previously untagged links in his e-newsletter, which I expect to be very helpful. However, then I looked at the landing pages for his direct traffic, and I see that it is almost entirely filled with thousands of unique URLs that begin with a question mark followed by the name of his e-newsletter or shopping cart vendor. It would be the equivalent of having a url like the following: "www.willmarlow.com/?constantcontact=keya;sldkfjsdlfkjdf;sldkjf" If we have this amount of information in the link, shouldn't there be a way to add additional parameters to the URL to move this traffic out of the Direct column? Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks.

How do I set up goals in analytics to track the sales funnel when several pages of the steps required to checkout have the same url?
I have found this in Google Analytic but it makes no sense to me - is there are better resource which explains how you do this step by step ( or a good video perhaps?) Identical URLs Across Multiple Steps In some situations, the URL does not change across a sequence of activity. For example, a sign-up process might have the following URL path: Step 1 (Sign Up): www.example.com/sign_up.cgi Step 2 (Accept Agreement): www.example.com/sign_up.cgi Step 3 (Finish): www.example.com/sign_up.cgi To track visitors' progress through a funnel with the same URL for each step, modify the tracking code to create a virtual URL for each step in the sequence that you want to track. For details on how to use this in your tracking code, see Virtual Pageviews in the _Asynchronous Migration Examples_guide, which shows how to do this in all versions of the tracking code. The following example shows how you might fabricate 3 URLs using the asynchronous tracking code: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/funnel_G1/step1.html']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/funnel_G1/step2.html']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/funnel_G1/step3.html']); You would then define your funnel and goal URLs using the ones you created in the tracking code modifications.

Googlebot Visit Time & Date Stamps
I know that in Google Webmaster Central, we can see general Googlebot crawl stats based on dates. Our site is crawled daily. We're trying to find out the time of day Googlebot visits our site - know of any ways to do this or tools out there?

Page Rank Decline in Webmaster Tools
Hello Forum, My team and I just got through completely redoing an eCommerce website for a yoga company and I noticed that in Google Webmaster Tools our site's average daily position changed from ~25 to ~40 in the last 5-6 days (during this time period we submitted our sitemap). I exported the Webmaster Tools results and found a high number of new keywords (which weren't there pre-launch) related to yoga. However, these keywords are not related to the products we sell. Several of these keywords have positions of 240 or higher and are skewing our avg page rank. These terms include words like "cricket logo," "animal yoga," "dog pose," "cat yoga," We did move our blog into our domain name now and there are some articles related to animal poses. Any thoughts as to what may be going on? Thanks!

Not ranking in Google.com
I put up my last site on the web since a month. So far I have been optimizing mainly to Hungary and I got used to that my content was indexed in a day and if content was good it sometimes appeared in the first two pages in a couple of days. Now with my new site I am targeting google.com. I put it up since a week, sent the sitemap to google, it was intresting for mee te see that even the pages to get into the web index needed two days. Seomoz says my site is all right besides some duplicate content issue i will solve soon. So it is past a week and even if I copy a complete sentence from the beginning of my home page and paste it into google my site does not appear. I also purchased couple of backlins but they have not appeared so far as well. Is that really this slow? Am I to impatient? Or should there be something else problem I should be looking for? Thanks for any feedback
