Anything to bear in mind when setting up a related 'family' of sites with linking between them?
-
We've spun out content from a single finance related news/analysis site (running for about 2 years) into several topic-specific sites on individual topics (markets, investment etc etc). They're all on the same server, use the same CMS (using a multisite setup), and share largely the same codebase, though obviously with customisations for the site names, and we've made sure each has a distinct identity.
At the bottom of each page, we're linking to 'latest posts on the network', aggregating the 5 most recent posts from all the sites and displaying them in the footer. We've obviously made sure the actual content is completely unique on each site though.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips about ensuring we don't dilute our SEO too much. and how to maximise our effectiveness?

Thanks Ryan - that's great to know. We'll definitely bear both of those in mind!

There are only two concerns I would express from a search engine perspective:
1. Be sure not to perform any black techniques, intentionally or unintentionally, on any of the sites. Your sites are related and a penalty may affect multiple sites.
2. Be aware of any content which may be duplicated between your sites.

Thanks guys - point taken on the fact that the links won't be worth a great deal - the actual intention with spinning out the sites was to serve quite distinct users, rather than to try anything black-hat, and obviously we'd expect the site value to decrease by at least the amount of any content moved off the site. The topics are pretty distinct, so the feeling is that over time, they'll each be able to build up value in those distinct areas.
I guess the real question (and I could have phrased this better!) was whether there's anything else we should be particularly careful to avoid? We're fine with engines realising that all the content is from the same source, and it's pretty well advertised all over the sites, but the last thing we want to do is take a big SEO hit beyond that initial one of just shifting a couple of posts around to have a few things on the other sites after launch?

Yes... the links between these sites will be nearly worthless.

Since your sites are on the server they will be recognized as a network of sites and the links will be devalued.
From a search engine's perspective, the value behind a link is when it represents an independent endorsement of your website. It is basically a "vote" for your site. When you link to your own site, the vote should not count.
Search engines will examine your site's content, code, IP address and other factors in an effort to determine if your site's links are independent in nature, or part of a network of sites as in your case. There is not a white hat means to create a network of sites on related financial topics as in your case. From a search engine's perspective, the desire is for you to make a single site and provide all your content at that location. They reward this action with increasing DA for your site. The idea of creating many micro sites is not ideal for SEs nor users, and the effect is to litter the internet with many small sites.
The SEO methods used on the blackhat side for micro sites is to scatter the sites across different IPs, change the coding and other efforts designed to manipulate search engines view of these sites. Some results are effective, others are not. Most people who are successful at performing this type of manipulation are only getting away with things for a period of time until they are caught. It's a shell game.

Removing bad/poor quality links from the site
Sometime back my site was penalized due to unnatural artificial and deceptive links. Then we got removed the penalty by uploading file in Disavow Tool. Bad links are decreasing gradually now . What i am concerned to ask is that: 1: For how long i should wait till Google removes all the requested bad links 2:Second, i believe there are still many bad links that I dont want to keep. How to remove them now onward? Should we send Google a reconsideration request for removing the remaining bad links (site has been recovered already and no more under penalty banner) Tanveer

What's Your Most Jaw-Droppingly Spammy Link ( or Promo) Request?
Sheesh. I get them every day. But this one takes the cake. It's from a woman I met once in my life on a long run with my running club. That was two years ago. Now she wants me to endorse her -- even though I know nothing about her professionally. But wait, there's more. She's not much of a runner. As it happens, I know a thing or two about fitness -- having edited a fitness magazine and worked on websites for many top fitness and nutrition pros. The idea of an MSW doing fitness programs for people with medical problems raises all kinds of red flags. She sent this Facebook IM: Hi Daniel - hope all is well! I was wondering if you can share my page with your friends, with the following message (or something similar). Thank you so much in advance! My friend XXXXXX, MSW, has been running XXXX Personal Training for the past 18 years. She specializes in exercise programming for people who have medical problems, everything from heart problems to chronic pain conditions. She works on site in her clients' homes in midtown and downtown XXXXXX. Please contact her if you know anyone who would benefit from her expertise.

OSE shows links on sites but can't find links
Hi mozzers, I'm cleaning up our backlink profile and looking up anchortexts in OSE. I downloaded and selected one anchortext. However when I go to the sites OSE found, I can't find the links. I look in the source code and onpage keywords. Is it because of my lack of skills that I can't find the links 🙂 or isn't OSE working properly.

How Are Competitor's With Zero Links (According to SEOmoz) Ranking Highly?
Hey everyone! This is my first post in the community after just signing up for SEOmoz. I've already got a ton of value from this community so I'm looking for to giving back as much as possible. The keyword gets 8000+ monthly searches on Google. Not so many, but the keyword indicates high buying intention. The funny thing is that the top ranking page has 0 backlinks (according to OSE). It seems as though there are some black hat tactics being used, as I doubt that they are ranking solely with on-page optimization. Any idea what's going on? Have you guys/gals seen this before?

Should a site run it's own affiliate program to get inbound links?
I've recently signed an ecommerce client who runs their affiliate program through Commission Junction. If they were to bring their program in-house and eventually get all those affiliate links pointed to their domain, would those links be counted?

How best to link multiple related websites.
I have a handful of e-commerce websites that overlap each other some in the same niche. I have already heard that it would have been best to make just one website, but this is not practical for me. Our business model goes back to a time before the internet. We have relationships with manufacturers where they refer business to us because we brand web sites which will not switch customers to competing brands. Our agreements make it ok to link to other websites so long as we have branded websites that focus on the specific manufacturers. For SEO, what is the best way to link these sites? Site wide links in footers.? Single links at on homepages? One way links from the most powerful site? Some other method? We have been wrestling with this question for some time.
