New website : SEO approach and strategy
-
We are a small startup company looking at starting a complaints website in India having user generated content(complaints) .
Would some one help me to draw overall strategies on how we can achieve good traffic over one year. We realise that there is no magic wand to improve positions in search ranking for a site which hosts user generated content esp. since we dont know what key words to target.
In this context i was looking form some expert suggestion on how we can go ahead with the SEO for the next 1 year ..
We are open to paying for the services if you prove that you have the required experience . Otherwise any suggestions from other who have experience in such situations are welcome ...

Good shout from Kerian. I would definitely recommend giving it a thorough read. I've just re-read it myself and I learnt some new tips once again.

The previous posts are right on point. The best place to start is with a clear focus of who you are and what your website will be offering others (what is your brand in clear terms). I’d also suggest reading “The Art of SEO”. You’ll learn how to research your competitors to see who’s linking to them and what keywords they are targeting. Keyword research and building a strong link-building strategy will be a critical part to your success. Once you have a strong set of keywords and you have a general idea of who you would like to target for links, you’ll then need to think about what kind of content you can develop to attract the attention of those you need links from.
To be a bit more specific to a site such as yours, it sounds like you are looking to build a website revolving around consumer complaints about products, brands, business, etc. Some likely places to research for keywords might be www.complaints.com or www.complaintsboard.com. Research them (and many other competitors) using SEOmoz’s Competitive Link Finder, Open Site Explorer, or other tools.
A place to work from regarding a link-building strategy may be in the form of a video broadcast that discusses some of the most egregious offenders (complaints) or bad brand PR. You could drive traffic to the site through twitter, facebook, and youTube campaigns to build popularity and interest. It is always important to put yourself in the shoes of your target consumers and try to visualize what they would want to gain from visiting your website and what might initially pull them in (link bait).
Anyway, I hope this helps you on your path to SEO success and if I can be of any further help, let me know.

Hi
The best place to start isn't far from general good business practices and marketing practices, with just a bit of common sense SEO sprinkled in.
-
Define a good solid brand.
-
Clearly define your product, and its unique selling proposition - what is it, why is it different? And what are its benefits that will make someone want to use it?
-
Then keyword research... what are the non-brand generic terms that people already use to talk about what your product will offer? Us this page on seomoz to get started with ideas.
-
Let your keyword research help dictate your information architecture, navigation, and site architecture. Each page should target 1-3 keywords, with the homepage being your main product keyword.
-
Use the beginners guide to SEO and this on-page optimization tool to help optimize each page correctly.
-
On launch day you should begin tracking with analytics, webmaster tools and track rankings.
-
Then you can start backlinking and social sharing. Use this page for ideas.
...the list goes on, but the MOST IMPORTANT THING is getting your architecture right from the beginning. Even Matt Cutts himself says if you get architecture right from the beginning you'll save yourself tons of time and aggravation later on.
Good luck!

Hi
I would recommend starting with this to at least get an appreication for the business of SEO http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
Read the questions and answers here on the forum and spend time looking at the blog posts and Webinars that indeed confirm that there is no magic wand
Update: On re-reading this I also realised that it may have been a bit trite. The most important thing is that from the beginning you are thinking of it and it is part of your focus. Make the entire team aware of the importance of this.

URL structure for SEO
Hi Mozzers, I have a site which is a combination of product pages, and news and advice pages that relate to the products. How would you approach the URL structure for this, following SEO best practice? Approach 1 Product pages:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | A_Q
www.website.com/product-category/product-page News and advice pages:
www.website.com/product-category/product-page/news-and-advice-story-1
www.website.com/product-category/product-page/news-and-advice-story-2
etc or Approach 2 Product pages:
www.website.com/product-category/product-page News and advice pages:
www.website.com/news/product-category/news-and advice-story-1 (with internal linking to relevant product page)
www.website.com/news/product-category/news-and advice-story-2 (with internal linking to relevant product page)
etc Or would a different approach be better?0 -

Launching a new website. Old inherited site cannot be saved after lifted penalty. When should we kill the old site and how?
Background Information A website that we inherited was severely penalized and after the penalty was revoked the site still never resurfaced in rankings or traffic. Although a dramatic action, we have decided to launch a completely new version of the website. Everything will be new including the imagery, branding, content, domain name, hosting company, registrar account, google analytics account, etc. Our question is when do we pull the plug on the old site and how do we go about doing it? We had heard advice that we should make sure we run both sites at the same time for 3 months, then deindex the old site using a noindex meta robots tag.We are cautious because we don't want the old website to be associated in any way, shape or form with the new website. We will purposely not be 301 redirecting any URLs from the old website to the new. What would you do if you were in this situation?

Right SEO strategy for Wordpress
Hello all, I am working on my SEO strategy for a WordPress site. I am trying to cover all my keywords in: 1.a) Page title trying to have a length <70 1.b) Page url trying to have a length<115 My question is: should i try to focus all my keywords in both name and url page path? or only in the Page title as the SEOMOZ's guide suggest? I would go for a mix strategy with my keywords in both page title and url path name, but I do not know if the search engines PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE PAGE TITLE, so mixing 1.a) and 1.b) would mean I am loosing keywords. I am using the WordPress All in ONE SEO Plugin. Do you recommend me this or any other plugin? This plugin has 3 input fields: a) Title tag b) Description tag c) Keywords My questions here are: a) If these tags replace the standard settings of WP as described in point 1.a) b) If the description and title tags are META TAGS that are not taken into account in terms of SEO but in terms of customer description of the contento of the page. c) Where are the keywords listed inserted in the page? In H1, H2, H3 and H4 tags? My feeling after reading the SEOMOZ guide is that this plugin is not providing any added value for SEO any more??' Thank you very much, Best regards, Antonio Alcocer

Strategy for a large website where you only work for one business unit.
I have been tasked with improving traffic/leads to www.intertek.com. The problems we face are that I only work for one of the business units. There are many within the company and they all work independantly. The services my division offers range from ISO certification to food safety/testing to oil and gas services. They want to increase their quality content and traffic. What is the best strategy to approach working with a company this diverse and the limitation of managing 500 pages of a 15,000 page site? What are the first steps and what actions do you think would give the best results?

Ecommerce: Add new range to current website or Create a new one
Hello, I run a website called easywatering.co.uk. We rank well for keywords in our industry in the UK selling Garden Irrigation. This is very much a summer business. My directors are saying that they want to start selling winter products (that have no relevancy for the keywords we target). They also want to keep costs down by using easywatering.co.uk to sell this new product line. If we do start targeting for new keywords that are out of our current industry, do you think that we would dilute the current content and therefore reduce our relevancy for the keywords? Or do you think that we would be fine to start targeting for new keywords in a different industry sector?
