Call tracking and Local SEO
-
I am the in house SEO/Web for a multi-branch/multi-state company and I am having a hard time tracking the amount of calls that are coming off of our site to the many branches.
I am wondering if there are any tips for use call tracking numbers without negatively impacting my local SEO results?
In one of the webinars they touched on image replacement and also that it some situations it might be out to just use the tracking numbers.

I am going to leave the SERP, Yellow pages etc the actual number.
The places I am wanting to track are on our main corporate site and on the branch specific websites.
As far as PPC vs Organic etc I want to track all traffic sources. Right now I am most interested in trying to get a better web vs non-web tracking at the branch level. This will help me show how much business the web is driving vs local paper phone books, word of mouth, etc.

There are solutions for call tracking available that shouldn't negatively impact your SEO. One solution is to use an image replacement, another is to use javascript and figure out what type of source is referring the traffic and show an appropriate number.
How granular are you wanting to track your data? Do you just want to know direct vs ppc vs organic, or are you wanting to know each PPC keyword that drove traffic and which of those keywords converted? That'll affect the number of phone numbers involved and the cost.
For your local SEO, you will want to submit your regular phone number, not any toll-free number or tracking number. To the best of my knowledge, there's no good way to track the calls from people calling directly from the local SERPs, but you need those phone numbers consistent with all of the other published information that contributes to your NAP (Name/Address/Phone). Having the yellow pages with one phone number, other links with other phone numbers, and your local listing with yet a different phone number is a Bad Thing. Sorry I can't quantify it for you, I just know you want everything the same for that listing.
I hope this has helped. In a previous job, I worked for a company that provided call tracking and ROI solutions which is where I got some of this knowledge. I myself haven't implemented call tracking on my website, but I'm aware of a lot of the factors involved.

You could script in that all organic traffic is displayed one number and all ppc another. Theory is that organically it's a consistent number across the board. Only ppc, or other sources would see a different number.

Some SEO 2016 questions
Hello MOZ Community, I have some questions where the following is still working for seo in 2016: Is an exact keyword in the domain still a good start? If a domain contains the most important keyword does one still need subfolders with that keyword in the url? Do you need multiple subpages so the main url becomes stronger? Is linkbuilding still the number one factor? Thank you for your thoughts!

Do I need to do on-page SEO for my mobile site?
We have a desktop site, and we just built our first mobile site. Right now, the mobile site doesn't have any title tags, meta descriptions or anything like that, but do I need to even do that? If I have all of that on the desktop site, and the mobile site is just redirected from the desktop site, can't I just do it on the desktop site only? Is there anything to gain from doing it for both sites?

Google Places for Local SEO
I am a webmaster at a company with over 50 clients, and I have to list the businesses of our clients in Google Places. Most of our clients are architecture agencies and construction companies, so they are unfamiliar with these things, and that's why I have to list their businesses on Google Places. It would be easier for me to manage all the places for these different businesses if I create the places with one gmail account. Can I use one gmail account to list the businesses for all our clients?

Does Bitly hurt your SEO?
I often use bit.ly or Google URL shortener in links when other websites post my articles so I can track clicks. However, I am thinking this may HURT my SEO given that it is taking away a back link to my website. Is that logic correct ? If so, what is a good way to be able to track clicks if a website posts your article without jeopardizing the SEO value?

Does HTTPS Only make a impact on SEO?
Hi. I run a site that's SSL only. (Using a 301 redirect to redirect traffic from http:// to https://). This might be a stupid question but i can't seem to find any conclusive answers to the question by searching. Does this negatively affect the search engine ranking of the site? Regards,

SEO Developers
I have a team of inexperienced SEO developers and the argument we continually have is that its a marketing role - however most of it is technical, no view state, no js, page load time, csssprite, metatags, frequency of updates to server, duplicate content via coding methodology, lioading content prior to ads, not spidering ads (IT says impossible yet google says required) etc. I looked at your referrals for developers and couldnt find any that recognized SEO as part of their skill set - do you believe tehre aer developers that specialize in this? Thanks, Michelle
