SEO Tomfoolery

Oh Hai,
I recently changed the permalink structure on my Wordpress based site, southwestbreaks.co.uk from the standard ?p=123 to a more SEO chummy /%postname%/. As a result, my site has completely dropped off the board for all my previously well ranked search phrases.
Having since gotten into SEOmoz a bit more, I can see there are WP plugins available that apparently would've done this a lot more smoothly.
I'd be most grateful if someone could explain if this drop off is just temporary, or have I somehow entered Google's shun book? The site has been like this for about 48 hours.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the quick responses.
Currently, visiting a page on my site using the old permalink structure redirects one to the same page on the new setup, so I'm guessing there is a redirect in place, all be it a 302? (all I did was change the structure in the permalinks tab on WP, nothing else).
Should I still do what you suggest with the htaccess file?

Hi Tim,
hmmm..that is a quick response from Google!
I suspect your problem is that you have unintentionally broken all of the indexed links in the google search results- Ouch! ...and any external links to posts from other sites - Ouch again!!
Basically, Google has the URL of your pages indexed, but you have changed all of the URL's without creating a 301 (permanent) redirect. So, when a user clicks that link in the Search Results page it returns a 404 Not found error.
Ah..I see that Dan has explained what you need to do to fix the problem.

Hi
Did you 301 Redirect the old pages to the matching new pages? Anytime you change URLs you have to do this, it redirects your link juice as well as anyone trying to access an old page with a link or bookmark - they'll arrive at the new page instead of getting a 404 (page not found).
You do 301 redirects in your .htaccess file (insert them after the wordpress info) in this format;
Redirect 301 /oldpage/ http://www.mydomain.com/newpage/
One line for every page you're redirecting. If you are using the new Yoast WP SEO plugin, you can edit your .htaccess file directly from WordPress, otherwise you have to edit it via FTP
BONUS: An easy way to get your old and new URLs so you do not have to type them all out, is run something like Screaming Frog SEO Spider or Xenu Link Sleuth on your site, and export the URLs into excel.

Technical SEO | | Eurasmus.com
eurasmus.com/en/erasmus-antwerp/student-room-accommodation It has a static version under which shows the first 18 rooms, the rest are generated by angular.
Also this static version has a dynamic text with around 400 characters. Is this the right procedure?

¿Seo issue with loading product images into an iframe?
Hi there, Recently, I modified the structure of my product page to load the images into an iframe, instead of using the img tag directly . The reason is because I wanteddd product videos(YouTube) to be shown in the same iframe. My question is: If the attributes of the images are correctly set, from a SEO perspective, Do you see any problem with that approach? I know Google bot wasn't very good crawling iframes in the past. Thanks a lot. Best regards.

Are sitewide links bad for SEO?
I have 11 real estate sites and have had links from one to another for about 7 years but someone just suggested me to take them all out because I might get penalized or affected by penguin. My main site was affected on July of 2012 and organic visits have dropped 43%...I've been working on many aspects of my SEO but it's been difficult to come back. Any suggestions are very welcome, thanks 🙂

.lbi file - SEO friendly or not?
Up until yesterday afternoon i had never heard of a .lbi file. It turns out it is a library file used by Adobe Dreamweaver. From what i can tell it works like a client side included but i am unsure of the technology behind it. The issue:
Technical SEO | | kchandler
When running through a recent SEO audit for a new client i found these .lbi files being used all over there site for site wide callouts and even navigation. When viewing this content through firebug or in the browser you can see the executed HTML content but when viewing the source or the page in seo-browser.com the content is nowhere to be seen. So my thought is this is not SEO friendly and is the same as displaying content in any client-side script like JavaScript or JQuery. Any feedback or thoughts on this subject would be awesome, especially if anyone has used these previously. Unfortunately i cannot share the client site but i would be more than happy to answer any questions if more detail is needed. Thanks in advance - Kyle0 -
seo moz crawl diagnosis
Hi seomozzers, We are creating a brand new website for a client and I would like to run an seo moz crawl to fix what has been done wrong. So my question is it ok to run an SEO moz crawl with a dev URL? Are final URLs and dev URLs will give me the same results or not? Basically, Should I wait for getting the final URL or is it ok to run a crawl under a dev URL such as www.dev2.example.com or http://183.2564.2864? Thank you 🙂

Getting to grips with the technical side of SEO
Hi all, I have been working in online marketing for a while, predominantly working on the affiliate marketing and business development side. Over the last year I have decided to focus my energies on getting to understand SEO and have picked up some actionable tips and strategies to put together an SEO strategy for the business I work for whilst at the same time broadening my skillset in online marketing. I would like to think I now have a good understanding on key areas of the SEO framework such as keyword research, on page optimisation and link building and look to put my learinings into practise as well as continue to play around through my personal blog An area that I see as more and more important so to get a full understanding is the technical side, getting a decent understanding on the learnings of HTML and CSS and putting this into practise. Can anyone recommend a detailed tutorial, powerpoint that provides insights and learnings on how to best understand this side of SEO? Thanks Simon
