A truly useful directory
-
Many directories on the net are just spammy annoyances, but some are quite useful, particularly when someone has really put some effort into a niche market. But how can Google look at that favorably? I would be willing to invest the time to put together a directory for our niche market, but if someone uses our directory, they would come to it, find the link they are searching for, then click and leave our site. They would visit one page on our site, and not stay very long. Is it possible to create and maintain a compelling directory and get credit for doing so? Of course, we would not have any spammy ads cluttering the directory, so that may help. Anything else?
Best,
Christopher -
"... and following one of your links, which isn't a bad thing."
Thanks, I did not know that. So, if they visit one page and return to Google, that's a bounce, but if they visit one page and click through, that's not a bounce, right? How far does that go? Does Google know if I sent someone to a useful site vs a spammy site? Is it partly a timing issue? In other words, if they visit my site and then don't return to Google for a while vs returning immediately, is that one of their metrics?
Best,
Christopher -
A directory is just that. A directory; if someone has used your directory to find a site they are looking for then great! Google won't see it as a bounce, because they'll be coming to your directory and following one of your links, which isn't a bad thing.
If you wanted to make more of a resource for your users, you could provide rich descriptions on the sites in your directory (this may also help reduce spam submissions). You could even create your own rating system for the sites. This may create a better experience for your users as they would be able to search your directory and get some useful and insightful information about the sites they are visiting... This increases the amount of text and information on your site, meaning you have a better chance of ranking and may set your directory apart from others in your arena that just provide links to other sites.

Is it possible to create and maintain a compelling directory and get credit for doing so?
Your definitions seem quite vague. What in your opinion makes a directory successful?
Google is a very successful search engine. Users go to the main page, enter their query, find a result and leave the site. Users often leave the Google site in 30 seconds and, if they find a good result, they don't return to Google. The low time on site doesn't mean Google isn't a good site. In fact, they are efficient.
The same idea can apply to your directory. Pretend you offered the "Green Business Directory". Many people prefer to do business with "green" companies. Users would go to the directory, search for "US web host" or another term, find a result they like and leave the directory.
In this example, your directory filled it's function perfectly. There is no other reason for a user to hangout on your site. Your "credit" happens as your site becomes more popular with users. Your site will be talked about socially, linked to and used by more people.

Recommendation for Geotheme or other directory plugins / themes
Hello, I was wondering, if anyone here in this community runs a directory using wordpress + a geolocation theme like Geoplaces or Geotheme or others. I have tested Geoplaces and felt with around 100 business entries that my page loaded superslow (up to 4 sec) already on a power server. I would like to work with a fast, secure and SEO-friendly directory theme...any recommandations?

What are the best widgets to use on Wordpress? And what is most useful on Wordpress for content syndication?
We are in the process of researching the best plugins and widgets for our clients' blogs. It appears that SEO by Yoast is most popular for 2013 so far. Any recommendations on which widgets we should be using or plugins for content syndication? If we use something like the Jetpack plugin, would this do the trick?

Need help deciding how to display directory listings in way Google will like best
My blog site currently has maybe 100 posts and I do about 7-8 new a week. I am creating a directory for an this site, which will end up eventually being a few hundred or more entries eventually. In the directory browse/search listing, each directory listing will have a title and a short description (one or two lines) and will show about 10-20 per page. And then the user can click an entry to see more details for the particular directory listing. This is where I have a choice, and I want to know what is the best for my site, in Google's eyes of course. Options: 1. The listing detail is displayed on a separate page. 2. The listing detail is displayed below the entry that was clicked, on the same page, by use of jquery to slide down the other content blow it to make room for it. (It actually looks slick, I've tried it). If I were writing full, unique pages for each listing detail, I'd choose option #1. But the vendors are submitting the content. It's possible they might just copy and paste their site's About page into it, or they might not even add any more detail other than their address. I can't control it. So, if going with option #1, let's say a third of the vendors add nice unique content, a third paste in some dup content, and a third just leave it blank (there would still be an address, couple line short description, and a title on the page). Would this situation be good, not good or neutral for my site? I'm not sure if adding additional pages, maybe half to two-thirds of which could be somewhat duped or of minimal word length would be bad or neutral for my site overall. As for my existing and ongoing blog pages--they are all unique, long and Google seems to love them.

How to make use of blog networks?
I read on a forum recently that someone was using blog networks as his primary tool for SEO. I'm not sure what he meant beyond this, however... Can anyone provide tips on how I might use one, and which are some of the best? Thank you very much in advance.

I have created 2 blogs for a client as they have 2 domains (1 for their core business, and 1 for a product). I want to use the same content on both blogs. What is the best way to set this up so there are no ranking or duplicate content issues?
We are pushing SEO for only one of the domains, therefore I would like one to be dominant. We will be sending the blog post via email to their database, therefore each blog needs to have the same content. Thank you!

What plugins & tactics are you using for Wordpress meta SEO?
Currently I use All-In-One SEO and I quite like how simple it is to setup and it's stable. Is that still one of the best ones? What are you using these days? Is it worth stripping out the superfluous meta tags that Wordpress now puts in? Is there any value to adding meta descriptions to all my Tag pages and if so, is there a good plugin that will auto magically create unique descriptions for these pages? Same goes for my paginated archives. Thanks!
