Can changing our links page make our rankings drop through the floor?
-
Hi all,
When I first started at my current job, most of the link building (aside from submitting to free directories left, right and centre) was replying to every spammy reciprocal email and adding them to our links page!
Now we're all a bit wiser about such matters (thanks SEOMoz!), I want to get our links page turned into something actually useful. My plan was to get it neatly categorised, with recommendations, cut out unrelated links that would be useless to visitors and call it something like "Our Friends"
I thought this might be useful for future link building efforts, but in its current state, it's a complete mess.
However, I am worried about cutting out a lot of links if they have been reciprocal ones. Are the sort of sites that would be sending typical spammy link exchange emails for window installation in NY likely to notice our UK education site taking away their link six months later and take away ours? If they do, will losing links from these sites harm us? Perhaps more importantly, is my plan a terrible idea in the first place?
Look forward to hearing from y'all!

I would personally remove the page(s), but you could also do the following if you are afraid of losing links from partners linking to your site when they see their links are no longer there.
a) nofollow or javascript all of the links
b) noindex, nofollow, noarchive the links page(s)
c) block the links section in robots.txt
at a quick glance or to a non SEO person it would appear that nothing has changed, in reality you neutered all of the links - you should definitely do something to protect your site.

Thanks everyone, those are some really useful bits of advice!
Salman - that's a nice way of looking at it. I bet that will help me persuade my boss to let me do it as I'm sure he'll worry otherwise!
Aaron/Kieran - I've got a feeling that they are definitely not good links and there's some dodgy looking stuff popping up in Open Site Explorer. Content's going to be a big part of our future strategy, though I've been interested in how well competitors with poor content have been ranking in comparison and wondering if we are being penalised somewhere. Our recent focus has been much more on improving on site SEO and generating better quality content rather than blindly plugging away on low quality links and we've been steadily climbing rankings since I started that.
EGOL - Thanks for the link! Similar to what Aaron was saying, it really does emphasise having a good quality well-built site over supposed "easy" linkbuilding. Plus, it certainly makes me feel rather less guilty about removing them!
Thanks very much for the feedback everyone!

a little off-topic, but relevant
A post made by link trader Maluk nearly ten years ago but still relevant today... (today you would add "nofollow" and scripted links to his complaint....

Hi Amy
_will losing links from these sites harm us? _
If you are worried about the link quality just put them into Open Site Explorer to see their weighting. If they are spammy then delete.
_Perhaps more importantly, is my plan a terrible idea in the first place? _
If you know/feel/think that your link list is spammy then I would delete them and so it is a good idea. This SEOMOZ link is worth a read as a refresher course on the topic if you haven't seen it already. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/link-building-101-the-almost-complete-link-guide
Good luck with your efforts

Salmen is right... I'll add that not only is a link from a spammy site bad, but reciprocal linking can also downgrade the value of a link since it seems forced, which it is.
I hate to sound so cliche, but if you can come up with content people will link to and share without having to trade links with them, then you will get the most SEO benefit.
However, you are definitely headed in the right direction and if linking to your friends is helpful to your audience... do it!

The plan is actually good and you should have done it from the start.
Consider link worth from spammy site as 0.2 as compare to a link from great resource as 8.
so if you loose 40 links from spammy site, and gained one link from good site it will be balanced or more beneficial.
Don't worry about loosing your reciprocal links if you intend to work on the plan of gaining more links from reputable sites!

Will removing a 301 re-direct from an old spammed URL drop the links from our profile?
Essentially there is an old page that has been the target of an old school link building agency. There is a 301 re-direct from the old page to the newer version. if I drop the 301 re-direct and update our sitemaps. Will those links be removed from our profile? The old URL passes nothing in actual value & a link building campaign has been running on the new page for over a year.

Splitting up pages with more then a 100 links
I got a couple of pages with more then a 100 pages / links on them and thus Seomoz gives me warnings for those pages. For some categories i have over a hundred of pages. I listed all these on 1 sitemap (html) because it is a quick overview for visitors which pages there are. Is it smarter to split them up or is that pollution of the Internet (almost identical pages). If i did so i would use rel="canonical" link to the first page (the original) but is it wise?

Link building for rankings VS Link building for relationships
A Big Shout To Everyone -- Good Morning and What's Up 🙂 As I read today through seomoz professional guide to link building and the section why link building matters and in addition to this a newsletter I received today that changed my whole thinking towards link building for rankings vs for relationships. It is already happening on social networks if you are active there, but what about on your website. What are your thoughts on the following ? Google's job is provide the most relevant results to surfers online, and looking the link profile of a site & the page itself is the key to determining which page to serve on plate to the surfers link query ! Webmasters Site Objective:

I think that we as webmasters have to ask ourselves what do we want to achieve with link building. To get quick traffic or build slow authority links, high rankings, lead generation, sales & other things here I may be missing etcccc Other Objective Networking & Relationship Building Alliances : What I discovered today is that building links for 1st page rankings are great and will provide me with steady traffic, but not all of it is targeted traffic, but what else can I do to bring targeted traffic and at the same time try to build alliances with other related non competing business owners online. The idea... is to apply old school networking / relationship building alliances to get targeted traffic to my site that can actually benefit from my services. How Do We Achieve This I become a editor for approving resource links for me site, only the best will be placed on my site as a resource. Build a valuable tightly themed categorized resource section with related non competing resources that can help my sites visitors find what they are looking for, send visitors to non competing resources that may purchase their services which helps me build a relationship with them, and may can with rankings as well, provided I am selective with my qualification process. Questions & Concerns Below : What should I be thinking about when creating a resource categorized links page How many outgoing do follow links should I allow from this links partner page How will this links resource page affect my own SE 1st Page Rankings and is it worth it based on getting targeted traffic Any pros / cons I may be missing here0 -
Etsy.com --Getting link juice through other pages on search results?
My sister has a store page on etsy.com where she sells home made crafts. And I want to help her rank higher on google with some of the other etsy stores. So i started to look at the other etsy store pages that are ranking well on google and found that they have a page authority between 48 to 52. So i looked at the backlinks of the ones ranking well on google with high page authority and found that many of their best links came from the internal search results page on etsy.com, and some only had one link from just an arbitrary etsy.com search page. I'm thinking this is because another product being listed on the seach page has a high page authority which then passes some of its link juice onto every other product on the page. But what is interesting is products are always being sold or getting added so even though you are on a search results page that happens to benifit from the link juice of another product the next time the page gets crawled you will be on a different search page. So i am thinking in order to maintain high page authority to you just have to have a lot of products listed so that there is a greater likely hood that you will find yourself on the same search page as another high authority page. I have not been doing SEO very long so i would love to hear what others think. I really have no idea, am i on the right track with this? (edited post) Thanks

Can Referral Programs pass Link Juice?
Does using referral programs, such as by using index.php?referral_id=0001 pass any link juice back to the page index.php? I'm creating a web app that ideally I'd like people to be able to link to and bookmark - so that they can pull up their own settings. Is there any way that I can solve both of these at once? The use of PHP GET and the use of SEO. I'd really like to get a solution as I'm developing my new website! Any help would be appreciated!
