Is my sitemap going to help me attract more visitors?
-
Hi,
As I await my sitemap to go live, can someone tell me the main benefits of it? A Google sitemap that is .xml one.
I have a images sitemap also as the site is an e-commerce store.
Should I be expecting to see an increase in visitors when I implement it initially?
Thanks
Will

Just to add a bit, if your pages are being frequently updated you can add a published date and frequency of updates in the XML You can also prioritize the pages (like giving your category pages a higher priority). However, only use these optional parameters in the XML if they will be used correctly and this will definitely help the bots in crawling your site. If your pages hardly ever get updated, then it makes little sense to let Google know in the sitemap that your pages never change.

Cheers. Exactly how I thought it would be.

Stephan's reply is spot on.
In short, if you do not have any island pages nor any pages buried deeply in your site, and you offer solid navigation then submitting a sitemap offers no benefit at all. If you have a poor design or other issues, a sitemap can allow pages to get indexed which otherwise might be missed.

It may allow more of URLs to get crawled, resulting in more URLs in the search index, hopefully resulting in more visitors. Here is what Google says about sitemaps:
Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover. In its simplest terms, a XML Sitemap—usually called Sitemap, with a capital S—is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

Help with Country selector pop up
Hi, We have just taken off our auto redirect on our sites so we now have separate domains - .co.uk, .de, .com, .fr, .eu, .com.au We are about to install a country selector that pops up. Its bit more of pros and cons answer I am after So the 2 options we considering are as follows The more complicated one with the following functionality across all sites in the case the example is having a French IP So I have a French IP – I arrive on French site = no pop up I arrive on UK site = pop up with text saying “you are on the UK site” and generates 2 button one saying“continue” and the other saying “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the USA site = pop up with text saying you are on the US site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the German site = pop up with text saying you are on the DE site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the Australian site = pop up with text saying you are on the DE site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the European site = pop up with text saying you are on the EU site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” The other simpler option I have French Ip 1. I visit the French site no pop up 2. I visit any other countries site and a pop up with a all our flags appear allowing the person to select which country they wish to go to Hope that makes sense any suggestions etc would very much appreciated Thanks

Going Mobile - Advice Requested
Hi, I run a website called tvfoodmaps.com. We currently have a desktop website and a mobile app (native apps). However the largest community of our users tend to use our desktop site on their mobile phones. Our bounce rate is about 12% higher for mobile devices than desktop users and our pages per visit drops by almost 50% from desktop to mobile. My hypothesis is that mobile users when presented with a "designed for desktop" site are more likely to leave since the navigation isn't as natural. I'm considering investing in either a responsive design for the site or a dedicated mobile site and wanted the communities input on what metrics I should be looking at to determine "is it worth it"? Or should I just stick with service the desktop version to the mobile users?

Why is there no sitemap.xml for SEOmoz?
I noticed that SEOmoz does not have a "root" sitemap called sitemap.xml. On the other hand, there do appear to be sitemaps for various sections of the such as http://www.seomoz.org/blog-sitemap.xml I was planning on having a root level sitemap that referenced difference sections of my site (blog, support, etc.) but I'm a little concerned that this site itself doesn't seem to be following that practice. Presumably this website is submitting the individual section maps to Google directly since they aren't linkable through sitemap.xml?

XML SiteMap - Right Away or Delay?
So, I have a new client whose web designer declined to create an XML site map. They said that they would rather wait a year and let Google create one. I am wondering what the opinion of other SEOMoz members is about this--do you create an XML right away or think there is an advantage in delaying? Personally, I always prefer to have one right away--What is the best practice in your experience and why?
