Sounds too good to be true?
-
Hi all,
Speaking to an SEO company at the moment about doing some link building for me but I just can't shake this suspicion that they are a bunch of cowboys.
My budget is £1000/month and they are promising 500-1000 high quality links/month. Common sense dictates that surely that would trigger an unnatural link building pattern and at £1-2 /link doesn't sound like they are going to be quality.
Is there any scenario where these figures might stack up. Personally I think it's bullshit but thought I'd check it out before telling him to piss off.
Thanx

The bullshit detector is showing a 95% likelihood of this being bullshit.
I agree with most of the others here who point out that they are probably doing forum/comment spam, and junk directories.
Finding a good SEO and link building service is going to be difficult if you focus only on the quantity of links. Like Thomas said, sometimes a handful of really good links is all you need. A good SEO company or consultant will be able to find those. Instead of number of links, focus more on proven results. Ask for examples of results (not link counts, but traffic, keyword position, or conversion data) or references from clients who have been helped. THEN dig a little deeper and make sure they won't be doing things to get you in trouble.
-
Run don't walk from that offer. They're going to spam on your behalf and probably get you penalized. Also, they could be talking sitewide numbers. One link in a blogroll on a blog with 50,000 pages is technically 50,000 links but Google discounts sitewide links.
If curious ask them to build 10 links for you on a trial and see what they come back with.
-
There are many search terms that only require a handful of links to bump you to #1, so I wouldn't gawk at the 10 -15 links. 5 relevant in content links will do more than 10,000 crappy directory links.
-
It's so tricky though because on one end of the spectrum you have companies promising the world and on the other end you have companies building 10 - 15 links / month for the same budget.
Is there a good resource somewhere to find a SEO business partner, that sort of insentivised approach is starting to appeal to me more than paying a company with nothing to lose?
-
mulith,
ask to see a listing of current and former clients. if they give you a name or two, do a quick backlink check on them. you should be able to discern a couple of things rather quickly:
-
if they don't provide a list, well, could be reason to be suspicious on its own merit.
-
if they provide a list and the backlinks are full of zero value directories, blog spam commenting, and other low-levle link schemes, you have your answer.
By and by, it sounds suspicious on the surface. I've learned one thing for sure, link building usually sucks, is tedious, completely un-sexy, and can be downright frsutrating. With that said, get out there and build some links!!!
Best of luck,
W

Tell them to piss off. It's not just suspicious, these people are trying to sell you a time bomb.
They will not just fail to deliver. They will permanently tarnish your site's inbound link profile by smearing it with their flaming bullshit. 500-1000 high quality links/month is really, really hard to pull off. It basically requires regularly creating uber-viral content. Few can produce viral content to begin with, fewer still can do it consistently. Those that can certainly do not come cheap.
The best way to make the roaches scatter is to turn on the light. Tell them to show you the inbound link profiles (and subsequent ranking improvements) of their 5 most successful campaigns.
My guess is they will not respond at all. If they do, be prepared for more flaming bullshit.
-
Yeah they did ask about target keywords and promised that they can get our site business4sale.co.uk to No.1 for "sell a business" in google uk within 6 months.
Current number one has huge DA so was also a bit sceptical.
-
Best thing you can do is insist in asking about the kind of webs where they will get those links. Sounds they will do things like forum profiles with a link (spammy), blog comments (spammy!) and more of that easy stuff which has less than zero quality or at the most a little bit more. If they are really serious about linkbuilding they will be asking about your keywords, former linkbuilding experience, linkable webcontent, etc.
-
Yes, that sound suspicious. Ask for details:
500 -1000 links from how many unique domains?
- 50 links from 1 domain means 100 domains...
- From what kind of site? From real third party sites or they use their own network of sites or blogs? There's a huge difference.
- Using what kind of tactics? comment marketing and forum? That could mean spam. Or from guest blogging, which could mean spinning in their blogs' network
- Doing outreach? Then the price is ridicoulus
- Directory submission? Probably they are very poor directories
- Social profiles? Them alone are not enough and many are no followed links
And ask for real examples, if they can give them. Or check out how the did link building for their own site.

Would changing permalink structure of 7,500 articles be good or bad?
Morning everyone, I'm the tech at a large men's lifestyle publisher and we're currently running the old /year/month/ URL structure in Wordpress. Now I've read countless articles about pro's and con's of month date vs post type formats (/2016/06/sample-post/ vs /sample-post/) and considering we produce both evergreen and daily news content we're stuck with making a decision. Currently we receive about 10,000 organic referrals per day (has been stuck at this for 12 months) but considering we have 7,500 articles, have 10 full-time staff and have been around for close to 7 years we think we're underperforming. Now providing we 301 redirect every old article to the new structure is there any other reason not to do this change? Any advice would be appreciated. Axps36D

Is Building a Local Directory of Businesses on a Subdomain Good SEO?
Hello Fellow Moz'ers: I own a small digital shop in a major US city. We had a marketing idea which I'd like some input on the soundness of. We are creating a professional services directory of 'digital professional services providers' in our hometown. The directory's membership will only be open to firms located within our city limits. The directory will be curated and maintained, ongoing, by us. Our motivation is 75% selfish and 25% benevolent. The idea is that, by building the directory on our subdomain, we hopefully will collect links, which ultimately will enhance search visibility. But I'm concerned about the devaluation directories have incurred in recent years and I've even seen advice given to the effect that listings in some directories might be harmful to a site's link profile. It is not our intention to harm those who might list in our directory. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Subdomains vs directories on existing website with good search traffic
Hello everyone, I operate a website called Icy Veins (www.icy-veins.com), which gives gaming advice for World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, two titles from Blizzard Entertainment. Up until recently, we had articles for both games on the main subdomain (www.icy-veins.com), without a directory structure. The articles for World of Warcraft ended in -wow and those for Hearthstone ended in -hearthstone and that was it. We are planning to cover more games from Blizzard entertainment soon, so we hired a SEO consultant to figure out whether we should use directories (www.icy-veins.com/wow/, www.icy-veins.com/hearthstone/, etc.) or subdomains (www.icy-veins.com, wow.icy-veins.com, hearthstone.icy-veins.com). For a number of reason, the consultant was adamant that subdomains was the way to go. So, I implemented subdomains and I have 301-redirects from all the old URLs to the new ones, and after 2 weeks, the amount of search traffic we get has been slowly decreasing, as the new URLs were getting index. Now, we are getting about 20%-25% less search traffic. For example, the week before the subdomains went live we received 900,000 visits from search engines (11-17 May). This week, we only received 700,000 visits. All our new URLs are indexed, but they rank slightly lower than the old URLs used to, so I was wondering if this was something that was to be expected and that will improve in time or if I should just go for subdomains. Thank you in advance.

How important is a good "follow" / "no-follow" link ratio for SEO?
Is it very important to make sure most of the links pointing at your site are "follow" links? Is it problematic to post legitimate comments on blogs that include a link back to relevant content or posts on your site?

Linking to urls with Query Parameters good for SEO?
Hey guys, I am currently buying link ad spots on sites (hardcoded, not using ad networks). I track the each link I buy and the sales they generate with query parameters such as : http://www.mydomain.com/?r=top_menu_nav_on_seomoz My question is : do these links still pass link juice? I have my canonical already set to http://www.mydomain.com Also, in Webmaster tools I have it set to ignore anything after /?r= The way I see it, a link is a link. Naturally I would prefer to send directly to my root domain, however, these links cost a lot of money and I like to track my results. Does anyone have experience with SEO and working with query parameters?

Would switching domain names be a good move?
Hi All, I'm trying to decide whether to switch to a more relevant domain name for an SEO project. For a while now I've already been doing the standard SEO work on an existing website, content optimization, link building etc but I can't help feeling I won't ever get the full benefits of SEO until I also change the domain name. The current website is for a law firm in new jersey called sandz.net which obviously has no immediate impression it is for a law firm so I'm looking at setting up a new domain and doing 301s to a new site. My concerns are that as its a highly competitive market, I've initiated the campaign to target local searches so I'm wondering just how beneficial buying a domain name with the term lawyer or attorney which actually be. And of course the ideal domain names such as njlawyer, NJattorney .COMs are all taken so I would be looking at perhaps a .ORG with the intention that all printed material the firm has still contains their original name, sandz.net and by word of mouth they should tell people their site is sandz.net as its easy to remember but for the sake of SEO and links then these should all be focused on a new domain.. Any thoughts appreciated.. Thanks
