Will Google penalize for redirects related to a company merger?
-
Company A is set to acquire Company B. As part of the merger agreement, Company A will be redirecting the linking domains of Company B's website (over 1,000 links) to company A's website.
Will Google penalize Company A for redirecting Company B's 1,000 linking domains to Company A's website at one time? If so, would it be better for Company A to redirect Company B's 1,000 linking domains in waves?

Thanks for your help on this question Ryan, irvingw and Gianluca.
Being that I am still an SEO newbie, looking back at my original question, redirect probably wasn't the correct word to use and my example could have been clearer and more concise, my apologies (still learning).
There's nothing black hat going on here, so no worries; but thanks for the words of warning. The links being discussed are from sites like Wikipedia, and other public profile pages. We're making sure that those public pages point to the correct URL. And since Company B was acquired by Company A, those public profile URL's should no longer point to www.CompanyB.com. They should all be pointing to www.CompanyA.com, instead.

No one knows what Google's algorithm metrics are, and even if they did the algorithms receive 500 changes per year.
As I shared, it depends on how many links the site already has established. If your site has a million linking domains then 1000 more is not even a thought. If your site has only 1000 linking domains then doubling the links overnight will surely set off algorithmic alarms.
It is my best guess Google would look at patterns. If a site has existed for 2 years and has 1000 linking domains, that averages to 42 new linking domains per month. I would feel comfortable doubling or tripling that number in a given month, but not going to much past that point.
I would also caution if you truly have control to 1000 unique linking domains, you need to have an extremely sophisticated black hat operation established. That would require 1000 unique domain registrations, 1000 unique c-block IPs, 1000 unique web designs, each site would have to earn unique back links, etc. The overwhelming majority of people who attempt to set anything like this up are caught and the entire network is categorized as an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings, and all links from all sites would be devalued.

"If you are talking about generating 1000 unique links to Company A's site from 1000 linking domains, there is a concern about having such an unnatural growth in links. It is dependent on the Company A site. If the site has a million links, then no problem. If the site has only 1000 links and you double overnight, that can possibly trigger an algorithmic penalty."
Actually, this is exactly what I'm talking about. What then would be the ideal number of links to redirect so as not to be penalized?
-
Well... yes, they are quite a lot.
But that agreement means also the disappearance of the site B? Or the merge of site B in site A.
Because if it is the second option, you could redirect all the site B (better if you take care of page similarity and not just 301 to the site A home page).
Then in GWT of site B you can advice Google that Site B is moved to site A. That way you are officially saying to Google: "Hey Matt, I'm moving and also my links are moving with me; therefore don't take wrong decision, because nothing black is happening :)".

If I am understanding you correctly, you would be redirecting Company B's website to Company A, correct? If so, you are welcome to redirect the entire site whether it is 10 pages or a million pages. It is a normal part of the internet and there is no penalty involved.
When you refer to 1000 linking domains it sounds like you are not referring to Company B's website, but the many domains which link to Company B. Normally a company does not have direct control over the sites which link to it. For example, it is possible for 1000 people, companies or SEO websites to link to this Q&A thread. SEOmoz has no control over who links to the thread. If SEOmoz wished to move the thread, they could do so and 301 redirect the thread, but they cannot go to the 1000 linking domains and force them to change the URL.
I believe you are simply referring to redirecting Company B's website in which case there are no concerns. If you are talking about generating 1000 unique links to Company A's site from 1000 linking domains, there is a concern about having such an unnatural growth in links. It is dependent on the Company A site. If the site has a million links, then no problem. If the site has only 1000 links and you double overnight, that can possibly trigger an algorithmic penalty.

You can redirect them all with no issues if the companies websites are compliant. That is they are not penalized domains, and also not overly interlinked to each other.Too many websites for one company is against Googles rules, you're only supposed to have one horse in the race.
My suggestion would be to look at each site one at a time and vet it for compliance, once you have determined that it's a healthy site with no bad link building done on it, it would be safe to 301 redirect it to your new site.
This is just being super cautious though, because theoretically you have no control over who 301's a site to your domain. If Google penalized a site based on that then competition would take penalized spam domains and 301 them to the competitions sites in an effort to get them penalized. That being said, I wouldn't want any penalized sites to be 301ing to my site just to be on the safe side.

Slug redirect to existing subdomain?
Hi everyone, I'm Levi, new here and new in the world of SEO so please don't judge if my question is silly. Back on the days when my website was built we tought of having subdomains to help with SEO. We have a couple subdomains set up https://stansted.tonorwich.uk, https://heathrow.tonorwich.uk, https://gatwick.tonorwich.uk, https://luton.tonorwich.uk etc .
Link Building | | Leviiii
We do have some content on these, but from seo perspective creating a slug and redirecting it to the subdomains would be beneficial? Would it make any difference at all, good or bad? Ex. Creating
https://tonorwich.uk/taxi-minibus-tofrom-stansted and redirecting it to https://stansted.tonorwich.uk
Will this help or we better create different content on the slugs? Waiting for your opinions.
Thanks in advance.0 -
Unnatural link Manual Penalty by Google
Hi, Our product Quiz Maker help users to create quizzes and can share, embed etc. We have a link in our embed code which was DoFollow and we've got many doFollow links from the websites on which our quizzes got shared but these links are too old like 2009, 2012 etc. After that, to complying with Google policies, we've changed the dofollow link to nofollow in embed code. Here are two scenarios: 1.) We've too many dofollow links which are too old and we don't have control over it as these are the natural links, given by our users before we changed the embed code link. 2.) Now, we are getting nofollow links from the widget as the embed code consists of nofollow link. Our embed code is editable and user can change it to dofollow or nofollow as per their requirement. Moreover, some people shared quizzes on their website (without using embed code) with dofollow link. But, now, google is taking manual action penalty against us. How we can resolve it as it seriously affects the overall performance of our website. Thanks

Do any presentation sites, Slideshare, Google Slides, HaikuDeck offer great SEO links?
I do a lot of public speaking and normally upload my slides somewhere so people can access later. With most sites I can upload to Slideshare or similar, then embed into my own site. I do it for audience convenience, but it would be swell to get an SEO bump.

Diagnose My Google Crash!
On July 20, my site peaked in terms of google impressions. On July 21 it crashed and then got worse. Here is my chart from Google Webmasters. http://tinypic.com/r/abruv7/5 I have been working really hard to get qualify backlinks from my niche (mom deals/coupons) and I know people like my site due to the growth in newsletter subscriptions etc. So what happened with Google? Is it Google Panda? Nothing on my site changed except maybe I had been getting less backlinks for a few days. I am having duplicate content issues which I posted about in another question. For some reason Google is indexing past page 1 of my category pages even though Yoast Wordpress SEO is set NOT to. So I am getting duplicate title tag errors from the subpages. I also have some crawl errors/404s due to deleting and renaming categories to improve my site. Any SEO issues my site might have (shorter posts than 300 words, affiliate links etc) are the same issues my competitor's have who are on page 1 of Google. Any input would be appreciated.

Google Webmaster Link drop
Checking Google Webmaster it looks like my links dropped in half? Yet I have been ranking very well the past 2-3 days? Is there any explanation for this? I have been doing Pr's, Blogs, manual link building, and concentrating on the social side of it as well, facebook, twitter, google+ can that have anything to do with better rankings? or is it still considered a minor part? Thanks!

Using a temp redirect or a link to another domain.
Helloooooooo (hey, we're in SEO...surely we need some sound effects as told in dramatic word elongation?) //First - background. I work on a site that does pretty well with search visibility naturally (by 'naturally', I mean it didn't need a lot of optimisation due to the relationships it has with its link network). I work on a site that sells a particular product - green widgets will do - as part of its verticals. Traffic to this section is great, and tends to convert rather well. These green widgets, however, are also part of another site that's part of the client I work for. The larger company was interested to understand what would happen to their conversions if these green widget visits were sent to them instead of staying on-site (namely, that's because they turn a bigger profit over there). So they set up a link on the page on my site to a landing page on theirs. Sure enough, conversions stayed the same on their site, and showed there may be value in keeping that flow active. //Second - question. I see a few options which mainly revolve around not changing anything, but the bigger part of company wants to see that change. My question is this: long term, should I keep the green widgets section of my site there, and use a link that goes to green widgets on the other site, or should I 302 it until they decide on what they want to do with the relationship between the sites? I know...a bit convoluted, but I'd love to get some ideas on what others have experienced in these situations, and what kinds of outcomes can help both sites remain strong. Thanks a ton, guys.

Will No Follow Links count toward your root domain links for Domain Authority?
I am wondering if no follow links help, hurt, or do nothing when it comes to increasing page and domain authority? I know they are not supposed to pass rank and I have read discussions that some people suspect they still might, but I am wondering if I have a mix of follow plus no follow, will the no follow ones increase the count of the root domains linking to me and help boost my authority? Assuming of course the no follow links are coming from quality sites with high page and domain authority of their own. Thanks.
