How to handle "2" homepages?
-
Came across an interesting problem. A site has the traditional homepage of site.com and ranks okay.
Later I found that another "homepage", site.com/home.html that ranks well for several terms but actually has old branding and semi-up-to-date content.
Site.com/home.html has a solid linking profile but not as strong as the current homepage (site.com).
The question I have is should I try to salvage the page or 301 redirect to site.com?
Thank for the help!

First...... before you do anything...
Run analytics on both versions of the homepage to see how much traffic they are bringing in, where it is coming from and if it is converting.
Only then are you in a position to decide what to do.
If one page has very different traffic than the other you might lose more by redirecting than improving the page and running it separately.

I would 301 the /home.html version to site.com. This will consolidate all of the link juice and create one stronger page. Figure out what terms the /home.html page is ranking for, and consider adding some keywords and content to your site.com homepage if they are still relevant and useful to your current site.

Either way i would redirect one of them. You could also use canonical urls to send juice back to the first page if the content is slightly different and still viable. Either way will work.

I'd expect you'll find, if you look closer at the inbound links site.com/home has, they'll explain why it's ranking for those terms.
And, in such a case, I'd expect you'll generate similar rankings with site.com once the 301 carries - which is what I'd recommend doing.
Unless (there's always an "unless") there's another page on the site relevant to what site.com/home is ranking for (or you could build one) - in which case, you can use that 301 to send that link juice to that deeper page. Never a bad thing to build deep links, but I'd want to be sure the topic is a match. (Again, I'd take a look at those links and their anchor text.)
Without knowing the specifics I'd say 9 out of 10 times you want to achieve a canonical home page URL and consolidate link juice by redirecting all alternative home page URLs to site.com via 301.

Homepage Ranking For Service Keyword (KW Cannibalisation)
Hi All! I will try and keep my question brief, any advice is greatly appreciated. I have a client that is a well establish coach hire company, naturally their main priority is to be ranking for 'coach hire' in their surrounding area. The homepage and /coach-hire/ page - both appear to compete against each other in the search results. The homepage is positioned higher up the rankings, it also has historical backlinks with anchor text relating to coach hire, whereas the /coach-hire/ page doesn't have all that many backlinks. The company has a few services that it offers through it's website - Coach Hire, Coach Day Trips & School Bus Services. The Day Trips and Bus Services pages rank well for their respective keyword. My question therefore, is - should I focus on making the homepage the best page for the 'coach hire' term and forget about trying to get the /coach-hire/ page to outrank the homepage? If so, what's the best way of doing this in terms of what happens to the /coach-hire/ page? Any advice is greatly appreciate and if you need any other info, just let me know. Many thanks, Gareth

Can an "Event" in Structured Data For Google Be A Webinar?
I have a client who is has structured data for live business webinars. Google's documentation seems to talk more about music and tickets than this kind of thing. At the same time, we get an error in search console for "Name" and location, which they list as "webinar." Should I removed this failed structured data attempt or is there a way to fix it? Thanks!

WordPress – parent category "blog" instead of regular "post page"?
In WordPress you normally show you blog posts on: Your home page. Your "posts page" (configurable in the Reading Settings) I want to do neither and have a third option instead: Assign a parent category called "blog" for all posts, and show the latest posts on that category's archive page. For the readers, the experience will be 100% the same as a regular "posts page". The UI, permalinks, and breadcrumbs will be 100% the same. But, I have heard that the "posts page" is important for Google for indexing and understanding your blog. So is is smarter SEO-wise to use a "posts page" instead of a parent category named "blog"? What negative effects might there be, if I have no "posts page" and just use the parent category "blog" instead?

How do I handle this 301/indexing mess?
I'm working on a client's site and noticed a brisk drop in rankings. In doing some digging I found that the homepage (domain.com) is 301'd to domain.com/home.html. Here's my problem/questions: 1. domain.com is indexed by Google 2. domain.com/home.html is not indexed by Google 3. both domains have some healthy linking 4. Is the fact that domain.com/home.html impacting rankings? 5. How do carefully handle this situation (ex. redirect domain.com/home.html back to domain.com?) 6. See the attached jpeg for a visual representation of my debacle. hcIiPAs

When you add 10.000 pages that have no real intention to rank in the SERP, should you: "follow, noindex" or disallow the whole directory through robots? What is your opinion?
I just want a second opinion 🙂 The customer don't want to loose any internal linkvalue by vaporizing link value though a big amount of internal links. What would you do?

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). How to remove "Results 1 - 20 of 47" from Google SERP Snippet
We are trying to optimise our SERP snippet in Google to increase CTR, but we have this horrid "Results 1 - 20 of 47" in the description. We feel this gets in the way of the message and so wish to remove it, but how?? Any ideas apart from removing the paging from the page?
