New Brand Tlds
-
Hi,
So ICANN is going to be coming out with new custom brand TLD. Essentialy if I have got it right you can register something like .ibm .amazon instead of .com or .org
My problem is I can't seem to find a creative way to leverage this.
I can understand ibm having one for its brand but me ?
What do you think? how can we can make use of this for seo and linkbuilding ?
Cheers,
Vishal

Well, it's going to make registrars a ton of money, that's for sure. So the financial incentive is there, for them. Big corporations will eat it up too - and why shouldn't they? It offers a great branding perspective, and because of the somewhat selective nature of who will be allowed to actually register for these TLDs, adds a definite legitimacy factor to any company fortunate enough to get one.

I can not see the merit in the .brand TLD. I think www.amazon.com is better than www.xyz.amazon. May be I am missing some thing here. Why would they even come up with this?

wow 185k , I am out for sure.
Thank you for the distilled link . Its a good read

Considering that it will cost $185,000 USD just to apply for a .brand TLD, you may want to first make sure that this will be an issue that you or your clients are realistically likely to encounter before you lose any sleep over it.
That aside, nobody's quite sure how these TLDs will affect search rankings. Given Google's growing (and increasingly worrying, for some) trend of trusting established brands in search rankings, it is certainly possible that having a .brand domain name could help your search rankings. Moreover, some aggressive applicants are likely to try to snag keyword-rich .brand domains, although it is anyone's guess as to how Google will weigh the importance of keywords in the TLD algorithmically.
Distilled had a pretty good article on their blog a while back. It's not an authoritative source for how this will play out (that doesn't exist, because we simply don't know enough yet), but it is an interesting analysis. Definitely worth a read if you're interested in these new TLDs.

Google Drop Following Negative Article in New York Times
I have two sites that were mentioned in a negative article in The New York Times a couple weeks ago. They saw a good increase in traffic, but on the sixth both of them saw sudden unexplained Google drops. Both seemed on the average position from search console doubling overnight. I run similar websites that have seen no such drops. The only thing these two have in common are being mentioned in the same negative article. Normally I would expect the mention from a major news outlet to make the sites more authoritative in Google's eyes. Is this a coincidence or a possible manual penalty? They still rank number one for their respected brand names, but everything else has suffered. Did Google make any recent algorithm changes or do you think someone at Google may have read the article and decided the sites needed to be demoted?

Using Brand value for SEO: Can we use keyword with brand name?
Hi Moz community, I am curious to know this. Let's say there is a brand value for a company. It has it's own popularity that it's been mentioned across the internet and social media directly with brand name without their service or industry keyword. Now if the company started promoting themselves like keyword along with their brand name, will it help them to rank for that keyword. For example, Moz is already famous, now they want to rank for "SEO" and related keywords, so they started calling themselves on internet "Moz SEO"; will this fetch them in ranking for keyword SEO? My ultimate question is, using primary keyword along with brand name will work out in ranking for that primary keyword or not? Thanks

Not sure whether to update existing page or create a new one
Hello guys, So far I have found this Q&A to be very helpful. I have a couple of product pages on my website which rank very low in the search results. This was because in the past they were not at all optimized in terms of title, description, etc. I would like to now optimize these pages, get some inbound links to them, etc. I'm not sure whether to do this with the existing product pages or create new ones. I'm afraid that if I optimize the current pages, the low ranking from before will carry over. Would it be better to start fresh? Thank you, Pravin

Effect of new Google SSL policy on our Analytics - AACK!
So I went to look at our keyword reports in GA today and our most popular keyword was "(not provided)". It now accounts for 10% of our referred visits. Unfortunately, it also has a 125% avg order value compared to the rest of our site. This is a really annoying policy that Google has implemented and will clearly have an effect on our ability to effectively market our site.

I am hoping that other people who are new to seo and are building a new site will be able to use this post to learn about what is involved and learn like me. Would be great to hear from people who have started their own site so we can all understand what are the important steps to make and which things we should do in which order. thank you everyone

When did the New Google Algorithm Come into Force in the UK
On March 3rd, the hits on my UK site crashed to 40% of the previous number. I am guessing it may be down to the google algorithm change:- http://wisestartupblog.com/seo/google-algorithm-change-february-2011-losers-winners/5081 However, I am aware this happened on 25th Feb in the US. Do you know when it happened in the UK. Could it have suddenly started affecting me on March 3?
