Keyword self cannibalization
-
Hello,
I'm confused about the recommendations for avoiding keyword self cannibalization.
I have a niche blog and some of my sticky posts on the homepage contain my site's main keyword in their title.
For example, say if my homepage has "dog training" as it's main keyword, then there are going to be links to more longtail pages with titles such as "dog training London", "dog training Liverpool" etc.
When I do this SeoMoz's on-page optimization tool tells me that this is keyword self cannibalization. I am building links to the inner pages using the longtail keywords only.
1. Do I need to rename pages with just "london" and "liverpool" etc and remove "dog training" from those links?
2. What is the best thing to do in this situation?
Thanks,
Kevin

You're doing it right, you don't want to target the internal page for just "liverpool"
Remember though, anchor texts on links still count as content on a page so don't over do it by having 50 links on the home page with "dog training xxx" "dog training yyy" "dog training "zzz" of that main page will look keywords stuffed. Use extreme moderation, it's better to have less instances of the main keyword than too many.
Remember to use synonyms to "dog obedience schools in liverpool" for example, based on keyword research.

Wrong pages ranking for specific keywords
Hi moz community We're currently experiencing a lot of our pages ranking for the wrong keyword in the SERPS. Take "womens ski wear" for example, the page rainking via Google links to https://www.dare2b.com/womens/jackets-coats/ When we have an optimized page here https://www.dare2b.com/womens/shop-by/activity/ski/ that imo is more suitable and has the correct H1, meta tile etc. So I'm at a loss to see why google see the jackets page more relevant? Any help on this much appreciated

Multiple keywords over multiple domains - am I missing the point?
This I think, is a conceptual question related to Moz/ KeywordTracking in general. Q: What is a "good" way to setup tracking for keywords across many pages, potentially multiple domains? At present I've identified some keywords that are relevant to our products. That leads me to want to track not just for a specific page, but for their rankings across multiple pages, and potentially at least two domains. One site is our main product site, the other a blog/info site. This is I suppose mostly discovery at this point. Working out what, if any, of our pages are ranking for a full set of keywords that we believe are related to our products. It may be that I'm completely missing the point of tracking, that I'm not using it as intended. I want to learn how our pages track currently (for a bunch of keywords), see that change over time as we make changes, and also visualise what we're strong in and what we're not. To me, this would let me see just where the holes are in our SEO easily. The reason I ask is that it seems I have to manually enter a keyword plus a webpage in Moz. Given I've 20-30 keywords I want to track many pages, this is going to take me "quite some time" (tm). Is there a better way to do what I describe here? Am I missing the point of keyword tracking?

Ecommerce On-Site SEO: Keywords in Category Descriptions
Hello, I'm doing on-site SEO for a client's ecommerce site. Are 160 words enough for a category description? I'm using the keywords once at the top of the description, and once at the bottom of the description, with the ones at the bottom reworded so that they are the keywords with a different word order. I used to put the keywords in 3 times but it just feels like stuffing. Is twice, worded differently the second time, enough for a category description? Thanks.

Important keywords in product names
Hi! among other we sell motorcycle clothing, which you can buy as a set (both jacket and pants) or single piece. Currently we name the products with the labeling in the beginning, e.g: Motorcycle pants R2000, Motorcycle jacket R2000, Motorcycle kit R2000 Motorcycle pants R4000, Motorcycle jacket R4000, Motorcycle kit R4000 This is causing keyword stuffing and cannibalization in the category pages as all the product names include important keywords. On the other hand it would be beneficial to keep the labeling in the name for search queries for the exact product. What be your recommendations? I tend to take the labeling away.

Should we add a link from every page with main keyword back to homepage
Dear all, We have a call for action on the bottom of all our 10K plus pages which has the words private jet charter in it. Here is what the sentence looks like: Call +1-877-727-2538 to hire private jet charter flights or get a private jet quote The "private jet charter" link goes to the homepage - the homepage has always ranked for the same keyword. Even though we have a separate page for private jet charter itself which may or may not be competing with homepage for the same keyword. The question is - does this help our efforts to rank higher for private jet charter or does it not. It used to be that the more links from all pages for specific keyword coming back to homepage was good - but now maybe algorithms may have changed and not sure.

How to use good keyword URL to help main site
Hi. I'm a long time ecommerce guy and starting a third business. The main site URL is the name of the new business but I also purchased a .com URL that is our #1 keyword to target. So I need to know the best strategy to use the keyword url for helping with getting a top ranking for that keyword. I'm curious if I can or should build out the keyword URL site for the search engines and use a 301 redirect. Can you get top ranking for a site that just redirects? Anyway, I guess you get my question. This keyword gets a ton of perfectly targeted traffic so seems like a goldmine if I work it right. Thanks very much.
