Backlinks point to files
-
Hello, Some competitors have which I am analyzing backlinks that point to files, eg. Dwg,. Fla. Pps. How is this possible? Thank you.

This is a bug with Linkscape and OSE, and has nothing to do with Google. In short, Linkscape gets confused when it sees binary files and has wrongly said they are links. We're fixing this problem and it's decreasing with each crawl (you should see fewer of these tomorrow after today's crawl has been released). The other regular links you see are valid.
If you'd like, you can email help@seomoz.org and our help team will help you out as well. I would wait until tomorrow though, when the fresh crawl is available and you have the most current stats, and fewer of the bogus links.

Thanks for the reply.
This means that this site actually has valid links analyzed by Google or this bug is only a tool and should be ignored?

Hi Daniella,
This is actually a known bug in the Linkscape crawl. In the past it has seen binary files and mistakenly counted them as links. Future crawls are reducing the number of cases in which this happens. So sorry you ran into this problem!

Backlinks and SPAM
I was doing some back link review of competitors and I have noticed that many of our competition have 300+ do follow back links from Justia.com and an additional 300+ do follow links from law.cornell.edu (they share the same database). The links on Justia are from different pages and they are all going to the root of our competitors site. So the questions are as follows; 1: For the purpose of SEO is this considered SPAM 2: If not SPAM, then does it have a positive effect on the competitions website and should I attempt to emulate for my client. Thanks in advance. -Jeff

Backlink Dilemma & Typewriters (Seriously...Typewriters)
Hi all. I have a bit of a unique issue. My company, Smith Corona **used **to be one of the world's premier typewriter manufacturers. However, we have completely got out of that business roughly a decade ago. Instead, we sell blank thermal shipping labels. As you might imagine, writing content and getting links about paper labels is not easy. Quite simply, no one cares about labels. They either stick or they don't. Typewriters is a whole different story. We still get tons of calls and emails everyday about them. There are online communities dedicated to them. I think if I even tried a little, I could get backlinks from people interested in typewriters. The problem is... that we don't do ANYTHING with them at all anymore. I would really just be pimping out our brand name in hopes of getting some cheap links. The real question is... do I even want these links? If they are semantically about typewriters and not labels, is it really helping my SEO efforts? Any advice is welcome. Thanks all!

How to get a plain text instead of csv output for backlink analyzer?
The link analyzer looks really great, I'm using it now to do some reverse engineering and it is seemingly able to give me far more than just the 1k limit we can get from yahoo site. But it spits out the results to a csv file which just has everything bunched up into a bunch of gibberish. Is there a way to get a plain text file so its readable/usable? Or how to convert or view the csv file properly? Thanks

Are "Content Farms" still good for backlinking in articles?
Out of morbid curiosity, are "Content Farms" still a good source to use for backlinking within articles that you share? I have yet to see some results to base an answer off of for myself. Some co-workers are wanting to utilize sites like Suite101, ArticlesBase, etc for sharing articles and gaining the benefit of getting some backlinks from these sites. Is this still a good tactic to utilize? My research is telling me no since the Panda Update... Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks!
