What are the benefits of SEO?
-
If a client asks "why should I spend time and money on SEO?", how would you answer?
Is "to be found in search engines" the answer?
If so, wouldn't it be more cost effective to use PPC instead of SEO?
Is link building a waste of time and money?
Is it better to just concentrate on quality content?
-
SEO is always for the long run. PPC will take you there but If you don't have enough budget. PPC in 1 year will go deep into your pockets and If you don't do well in PPC campaigns you're money will just be wasted.
Is "to be found in search engines" the answer? Yes, but SEO is not all about being found in search engine. SEO is about building brands that can be considered as an authority on its niche. Brands that last in people's mind.
Is link building a waste of time and money? Yes and No. Yes - If you are building links that aren't meant for the long run then they will be just waste. No - if you know how to build links that lasts such as quality content, themed link building campaigns, guest posts and other efforts that raise brand awareness into further level.
_**Is it better to just concentrate on quality content? **_The word "just concentrate" made me pick NO as an answer. You need to explore every possibilities when you are doing SEO. Just don't break the rules.
I love the fact that many SEO do experiments and share their success stories everywhere.

Stores Direct makes several great points here; I especially like the paragraph after the list:
SEO doesn't just improve SERP performance - it can also improve website usability and make a better impression on site visitors, thereby having a positive impact on conversions.
Excellent point if you care about what visitors to the site think!

Answering this question "to be found in search engines" is not the right way to go with a client who is concerned about their bottom line. The answer they need to hear is "to make more money", so you need to answer in terms of financial benefits such as
- Reduction of PPC costs
- Increased revenue from long tail search
- Increase in unpaid traffic
- Increased revenue from unpaid traffic
- Increase in Per Visit Value
- Improved conversion rates
SEO doesn't just improve SERP performance - it can also improve website usability and make a better impression on site visitors, thereby having a positive impact on conversions. When our original SEO specialist, who I had been assisting, left the company I had to make a solid financial case for continuing in that role myself. A trawl through Analytics provided an abundance of evidence of financial benefits on all the above points.
Quality content is great so long as people see it. Quality content will attract links effortlessly so long as people see it. People are more likely to see your great content if you rank well in the SERPs. SERP performance improves when you build links. Essentially, spending time link building will make it easier to attract organic links because more people will see your content in the first place.
When asking if link building is worthwhile try looking at the full keyword difficulty reports for any important keywords for which you are outranked, and do a point by point comparison between your site and your competitors for each keyword. If you find you are being outranked by sites whose main advantage over you is stronger link profiles that tells you it is worthwhile to build links.

Based on just about any data you study, even though nearly 90% of every dollar in Internet marketing is spent on SEM, and around 10% on SEO, there are 7 to 8 more clicks for an organic placement compared to a paid. Yes, conversion is better on paid, but only at about 1.5 to 1. So at the end of the day SEO is a better spend by roughly 5 to 1.
That said, assume that is not even the issue for the client. Why are they in business? Do they want to have a website? If they do want one then why would they not want to do their best to have it seen given that the cost is typically incremental?
So, if someone wants to be seen. If they want to have traffic to their site, so that they become more well known, so that they sell a service or a product, so that their poetry is read, etc., then with SEO it is the gift that keeps on giving. Once the money is spent on PPC or TV or radio or print......there is little residual. Even in a competitive arena if you have optimized a site and then do nothing else for 3 months, it will diminish over time providing a residual.
But, hey do some cool PPC and check it out. (No, I am not against PPC, I just believe to do that prior to optimizing fully is a bit of a waste).

Do links from International SEO counterpart site carry weight?
Hi everyone! One of our clients has a competitor who has an international reach with their website. Their hreflang goes from Brazil, German, US, China, etc. We found that the Chinese site (.cn) sends over 900,000+ backlinks to the main US site (.com). The hreflang for the site has the .com US version of the site as the canonical. So my question is - does our competitor get any link equity from the 900,000 links they are getting from their Chinese (.cn) version of the site? My initial thought is that because they are marked up with hreflang and canonical tags, those 900,000+ links wouldn't' have any equity? Would love some thoughts/guidance on what others think.

How to safeguard against negative SEO for new sites?
Hi Mozers!! I have a question. The ugly tools for blog commenting etc are still out there, my question is what if your competitor notices you that you are new to the business and they start building 20,000+ backlinks to your new site, and they too with one exact match anchor text that you are targeting. I know we can disavow tool, but I guess that would be too late? What are your thoughts? What will be the solution the above case scenario?

How to work with directories for SEO?
Hi, How many directory links do you tend to build in 1 month? And what do you look for in a directories before you submit? I could build 2 links a day from directories but the thought of 60 links being built a month from directories shouts bad news to me. I've had a look and come across a few directories with high DA/PA but at the end of the day they are just link directories, no content, lots of thin pages with lots of links pointing out. A couple of examples of good directories would help. Cheers

Reseller seo
so i have a web design firm and, when i decided i need to offer seo services i originally went with an seo reseller company. i decided to try them out on myself so i gave them 4 keywords to rank for and tried them for about 6 months. when they started, our website was in google oblivion for those 4 keywords. after 6 months some keywords are on page 1 and some at the top of page 2. the ones on page 1 are the ones i also optimized for by putting the keyword in a footer link in all my clients' sites. when i look over what they did they either wrote cheesy articles that link back to me and posted them in random places or they commented on people's blogs linking back to me. but it seemed to work. at least to get me from oblivion to page 2. now it seems to me these methods are discouraged here but they seem to do at least some good. any thoughts or comments on this?

Custom Domain Vs Free Sub Domain for SEO
What is your take on custom domain vs free sub domain for SEO? (example.com vs example.blogspot.com) Say if I have 10 links from 10 different domains but all hosted on blogger.com, will it still have the same link benefit as ones hosted on different hosting account? I am assuming it might be less due to the same C class IP appearing for blogger hosting. What do you think?

Best SEO Bang For Buck from $1000
I'm a developer with little SEO / Marketing skills. I've recently redesigned my site ( www.habitmix.com ), I think the site is great but it doesn't get a lot of organic search traffic (about 30 visits a day). I have $1000 available to spend in next couple of weeks and am wondering what the best way to use the money would be. I realize SEO is a long term process not a one time job, and I realize $1000 isn't a big budget. So far I am considering : Finding someone on ODesk to create blog content, say a post a day for a month Finding an SEO company to analyse the site and create a link building strategy for me to execute. Surely there are a lot of other ways I could spend my $1000 that would help grow organic traffic. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers Sam
