How to serve a Mobile & Full Site using one URL?
-
Hello,
Does anyone know of any resources or tutorials that outline how to serve a smartphone-formatted website using the same URL as the full site?
I know that one solution is using media-queries to serve a seperate CSS stylesheet, but you still have the full HTML source code. In other words, I might want to serve a smartphone & desktop user different content, but under one URL.
WP Touch (Wordpress Plugin) is a perfect example of what I mean, but how is it technically achieved? It serves two different sets of HTML for smartphone & full, but using one URL

No, I am also in the process of enquiring, I program in ASP.Net MVC, and the new MVC4 comes with a few starter templates (with Visual Studio 2010), this is where i got the info i suggested.
I can send you a starter template if you like, you can have a look though if you like. Actualy you will need VS2010 to run it, you can down load a trial but then you may as well download MVC4 as well.

Hi Alan,
Thanks very much, I agree - it likely would be easier to use media queries, but I am looking for that ultimate fix and insight on how others do it
-
Then of cause you would need to use a server side solution, this is quite simple in therory, all you need to do is get the severvariable HTTP_USER_AGENT to detect the browser, but then there would be a lot of different serveragenst to detect and more in the future. It would also be a pain having to generate html via server script for every page. I tried doing that for Netscape 2 and IE2 but gave up, it was too much work. Back in those days the way of doing things in browsers was completely different untill IE won out.
I think the eay i was saying is much easier, and there is no missing html, its all used on both versions just positioned different.

Hi Alan,
As mentioned. I'm not looking for a CSS solution, but rather a HTML one where different HTML is served if the user-agent is a smartphone.
CSS Media Queries can work in some situations, but not for all. For example, taking the following page - http://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/index.aspx - and using a mixture of CSS and display none; to output http://www.flybmi.com/mobile would result in a mobile site full of hidden/wasted code.

I have a few examples. i used the tag in the head section of the html.
Along with Media css see below. you slip this css into your normal css sheet, and give an alternitive css inside for phones,
if you look at one of my sites http://perthseocompany.com.au/ i have done like this you will notice that when the screen size goes below 850px it then takes on the alternative css. One of the main things you will want to do is make sections of your website line up verticly under the alternitive. You can do this by using float left and float right in normal site and float none in alternative css.
I do not have my site perfect because i have not yet had the time. but you get the general idea by playing with browser width.
Note the max-width: 850px in css, this is the width at witch the css changes@media only screen and (max-width: 850px)
{header .float-left, header .float-right
{
float: none;
}

Hi Tommy,
This doesn't provide any technical answers unfortunately, and refers to mobile devices as opposed to smartphones. Googlebot-mobile is designed for WAP/iMode etc. style websites, Google on smartphones, tablets etc. displays the same results as the desktop version.

Hi Pete!
Take a look in Googles SEO guide on page 26, http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/www.google.com/en//webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf
Good luck!

Address On Every page for e-Commerce site?
For a primarily e-commerce site, should you have your address on every page (in the footer, for example)? Or is it enough to just have it on the contact page? Thanks, Ruben

Anyone migrated a site from PHP into ASP? Anyone migrated into Sitecore?
We have a network of websites in Linux-based PHP and we may be switching them over to ASP.NET and using SiteCore CMS. Right now, we don't have a CMS. We would also be switching from using file extension www.site.com/file.php to no extensions www.site.com/file/ therefore altering our directory structure. We are aware of the potential impacts to traffic of the initial migration, but are now more curious about SiteCore CMS and SEO, performance and indexation/crawlability. Has anyone made this move before or considered making it? Can you offer any success stories, horror stories?

Two Different IP Addresses For Different Parts Of One Site Okay?
I have a client who has a site in Drupal and, for reasons too complicated to go iinto, wants to host part of the site in Wordpress from a different server. So it would be like oldsiteexample.com being in Drupal and the new oldsiteexample.com/marketing and everything below /marketing being in wordpress on a different server, obviously with a different IP address. Are there SEO considerations in this? The existing oldsiteexample.com has a lot of authority/rank/traffic and don't want to inadvertently risk that. Thanks... Darcy

How does a Responsive Site kill SEO?
How does a Responsive Site poentially kill SEO? I've seen a few feeds on twitter how a website took a rankings dive after implementing a Responsive theme; yet, it's not clear to me what is actually going on within a Responsive site that would cause the SEO rank to tank? I can only speculate that it introduces a bunch of 404 errors, or that it changes all of the URLs into gibberish, so you loose all of the links coming into your website if not 301'ed? Can someone clarify, what are the actual mechanical issues on a Responsive website that becomes a concern to SEO? Thanks.

For a varied product type or keywords group is it best to have several sites?
Hello everyone... Question: I have 7-8 generic keywords that I would like to rank for, is it possible for one site to rank highly for all these different keywords, or would this be best achieved by making 2 or 3 websites in total targeting different keywords (product sectors)? More info: We are in a niche industry & would like to know if it would be beneficial to have several websites made for specific product types rather than one main site? Although these sub classifications of products are nice, they are competitive as they have a high search volume Would it be better to build specific websites that only do that one type of product and have related keyword in domain, content & blogs on the site to that effect to increase relevance and positions as a result? Thanks

What's the best was to structure Product page information on my site?
Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4). One of the most critical components of the site is our product database. We don't actually sell anything directly - instead we monetize them by displaying relevant affiliate product feeds and price comparisons. However since the Panda update was implemented in February my traffic (particularly my long tail, product related traffic) has dropped off considerably. I had about a 20% drop in overall traffic, but have made up some of the ground in the past week. However I want to know once and for all how I should structure my product related information as I have a ton of great content that is ready to be published in this section but want to be sure I structure it the best possible way from a SEO standpoint. Here are a few different options I've come up with for displaying information about products on my site. For the purpose of these examples I am going to refer to all of the information that makes up my product pages collectively as "product profiles". Please let me know which is the best SEO wise (or if you have a better way of doing it let me know): - Option 1 - Current Method - Divide Content Sections into different pages / urls Example: http://tinyurl.com/4tpdlbl This is how the majority of my product profiles are currently structured. I did this to improve load times and to keep the total number of links per page down. In addition to the core product profile subpages: "Product Details","Compare Prices", **"**Product Review", "Hot Auctions", and "Checklists", I have the Checklists area further segmented by subset, each of which is on its own page that is only accessible through the main Checklists tab of the profile. - Option 2 - Everything on one url / page the old fashioned way, with everything available by scrolling vertically. This would make the page go on forever though. - Option 3 - Everything on one url / page, but visually segmented using css / javascript tabs. Example: http://tinyurl.com/4kqhauh I looked at the source code and all the page text is there, so it looks like it would be spider-able but you tell me. Or would another method of tabbing be better? My site is wordpress based so the functionality comes from a plugin. - Option 4 - Use post tabs that are technically all on the same page, but make each individual tab be accessible through its own suburl, all of which share the same core canonical url. Example: http://tinyurl.com/4bs9pjs Clicking on any of the individual tabs will result in something like ?postTabs=2 being appended to the core url. Example: http://tinyurl.com/4gvgufc Any input would be greatly appreciated asap! Thanks Mike
