Blog URLs
-
I read somewhere - pretty sure is was in Art of SEO - that having dates in the blog permalink URLs was a bad idea.
e.g. /blog/2011/3/my-blog-post/
However, looking at Wordpress best practice, it's also not a good idea to have a URL without a number - it's more resource hungry if you don't , apparently.
e.g. /blog/my-blog-post/
Does anyone have any views on this?
Thanks

Thanks Tom,
That's all very useful stuff, and food for thought.
Cheers

Hi Ben,
The benefits include:
-
having a shorter URL
-
moving keywords to earlier positions in the URL
-
making the pages appear not so deep in the site structure
Some people have said they don't want the date in the URL to devalue a post in a readers mind, where others have said it is useful information for a reader to know the date of a post.
As with most things SEO, it is a case of 'it depends'.
I would add that the 301 redirects shouldn't take too long to sort out and test, and so don't let that weigh too heavily into your decision; decide what you think is the best decision from the SEO point of view and then worry about if that means you need to do 301 redirects,

Fight, Fight!
Thanks everyone, that's useful to know. Can anyone explain the SEO advantages of removing the year and month from my URLs? And are they significant enough, that I should consider doing it - with the necessary 301 redirects in place?

Trust me, you won't run into any resource problems unless you plan to serve to the ten's of thousands!
I personal use mysite.com/postname as I find the category of a post dilutes the target keywords.
-
Ben - you could start a real fight on this topic!!
I myself am a:
/blog/category/post-name/
or
/blog/post-name/
kind of guy, but it can differ depending on circumstances.
It is important to decide on a convention, then stick to it, and make sure you are serving each post via only a single URL. If you've not checked out 'All in one SEO pack' for Wordpress then certainly take a look at that.

I use /%category%/%postname%/ haven't had any resource problems yet.

Moving a blog from unique domain to root /blog/ but on 2 different servers? HELP!
I have a main site hosted on one server, I have the blog hosted on another server - BOTH of which my team has FULL control over. I ultimately want the blog to reside on the root domain: www.mysite.com/blog/ My network team is saying "DNS will not allow this to happen, the resolution will ultimately have to be on blog.website.com" Has anyone out there done this? Is it even possible? HELP!

Strange duplicate url
From your csv report I have this strange issue. This url: elettrodomestici.yeppon.it/climatizzatori/condizionatori-fissi/prodotti/condizionatori-fissi-comfee/ it's a duplicate of this elettrodomestici.yeppon.it/climatizzatori/condizionatori-fissi/prodotti/condizionatori-fissi-comfee/ but the only url that I can see in the website is this one. Why the "-" is transalted some times in "%2D" referrer obviously is elettrodomestici.yeppon.it/climatizzatori/condizionatori-fissi/prodotti/condizionatori-fissi-comfee/solo-disponibili/ I have many duplicate url...Can you help me? Thanks

Keywords in Vanity URL
If I set up a vanity URL that just 301's to the main site, do the search engines look at the keywords in the vanity URL when determing how to rank the site. For example, if I set up a vanity URL of www.coolnewtechgear.com, and redirect it to www.company.com/products/, would the search engines view the keywords of cool, new, tech, and gear and associate that with the page it's getting redirected to? Or does it ignore the vanity URL and only look at the content of the page itself?

Canonical Tag Pointing To The Same URL
Does it matter if a canonical tag points to the URL in which the tag is on? Example Page: http://www.domain.com Canonical tag: rel="canonical" href="http://www.domain.com" /> I only ask because a client of mine has a CMS that automatically does that to every page on the site and there's no way to remove it. Will this have a negative impact or does it not matter at all? Any insights would be great because I can't find a clear answer anywhere online. Thanks!

When URL rewrite can lead to un pretty URLs
Hi Mozzers. I've a client that has done a little bit of mess rewriting the URLs of its site. In fact, also the data base driven URLs are rewritten, but the dev forgot to change the space with "-", so that now the 95% of the URLs are like this one: http://www.portalesardegna.com/search/Appartamenti e Residence/ Obviously not really a pretty URL. I am not so sure if this issue has an SEO consecuences (in fact, the site ranks pretty well also with those kind of url), but I am thinking more on usability issue. Could you suggest me any easy fix to this rewrite problem?
