Google Analytics - multiple counters
-
Hey there Mozzers!
One of our customers wants to seperate one Google Analytics account into multiple accounts. The website is divided in three parts:
- Main: www.website.nl
- Sub1: www.website.nl/sub1
- Sub2: http://www.website.nl/sub2
And they would like 4 different reports under one account.
- R1: Total count
- R2: Website.nl (without Sub 1 & Sub2)
- R3: Sub1
- R4: Sub2
I know multiple counters will get in conflict with each other, so I have to implement some filters. E.g: We can configure a filter for R3 on "astmakids" in URL.
My question is: is there a safe way to implement multiple Analytics filters on one website? And how will R3 see visitors that come from the root domain astmafonds.nl? Are they referrals?
Thanks a lot in advance!!

I had to set up an additional profile to show the hostnames, as given here. Is there a filter on this profile to display the hostnames? If so, delete it.
You're right, you definitely don't want multiple counters.

"Are you saying GA is displaying the entire URL when you view reports?"
Exactly. For some reason, Google shows the full URL for this subdomain. I don't want to work with multiple counters on one website, because multiple counters can obstruct each other.
Do you have experience with accounts that contain both filters and subdomains?
Thanks John!

Are you saying GA is displaying the entire URL when you view reports? It shouldn't be. I set up an additional profile for myself to show the full URL names for all my subdomains in the page URLs. If that's what you're looking for, I can help you with that.

Dear John,
Sorry for opening this question again. We now encounter another problem:
Sub4: http://subdomain.website.nl/
Is it possible subdomain to measure this subdomain as well, without GA displaying the entire URL? (E.g. "http://subdomain.website.nl/page" instead of "/page")\
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Partouter

The new interface is cleaner and easier to use. You can switch back and forth between the new and old interface at will with a link in the header, so I'd recommend trying it out on your terms before they force everyone to switch over! It's not that much different.
You can set up those profiles and filters in the old interface pretty much the same way.

Thanks a lot for your detailed answer, John!
I'm using the old Analytics UI, could that possibly be a problem?

(The instruction below are in the new Google Analytics UI)
That shouldn't be a problem. You only need one Analytics snippet on your site to do this, the rest can be done with profiles and filters. You'll want to create new profiles in your web property to track these for each of your examples above. To filter for www.website.nl/sub1, create a profile and then a filter for it. You can do this by drilling into the profile, and under the Profiles tab, find the Filters subtab. Create a new filter. Choose "Custom filter" and "Include". Choose "Request URI" in Filter Field. For the Filter pattern, you'll put "/sub1". If you're doing anything fancier for request URI, beware that it takes a regular expression.
That should work for sub1, and you can repeat the above for sub2. For excluding those, you should be able to create a profile, and instead of include, choose to exclude, and create two filters on the profile, one for sub1, and one for sub2.
And yes, in the smaller profiles, when someone comes goes from a /sub1 page to a /sub2 page, it'll show up as a referral from sub1 in the sub2 profile.

Discrepancy between FB PPC and Google Analytics
This question was answered in 2011 here: http://moz.com/community/q/facebook-ppc-number-of-clicks-according-to-fb-different-than-visits-in-analytics. Wanted to post it to the community to see if anyone had any new thoughts in the last 3 years. I have been running campaigns on Facebook and seeing dramatic discrepancies between Facebook and GA's numbers. For example, I ran a Facebook ad campaign for a chiropractor where FB shows 35 clicks to the website, but GA only shows 2! An attorney ran a Facbook promotion, got 4 clients who actually filled out a questionnaire online, but GA only showed 2 visitors exiting off the form completion page. Is this because the users did not have JS/cookies enabled? Something else? What is the recommended work around? Tracking URL?

Tracking PDF Downloads in Google Analytics
Hi, I work on a site that allows users to download whitepapers after filling out a form. Once they do this they are redirected to a URL which is the PDF. We use Wordpress and these documents were uploaded to the media center. I've tried researching how to track these downloads in GA, since the code is not present on these pages, but have read a few different answers. Anyone have firsthand experience? Thanks!

Google Keyword Tool versus Google Analytics
Hi I'm trying to establish a methodology to best show the gap between potential and realised organic keyword traffic. To obtain potential keyword traffic I'm using the Google Adwords keyword tool to derive local monthly search volumes for exact keyword matches. To get the realised data I'm using Google Analytics. However, to get the I'm confused as to which is the best way of getting a comparable metric from Google Analytics (GA). I was using custom reports and the 'organic searches' metric. However, this provides different values to a standard report selecting non-paid search in the default advanced segments. What is the best report/metric in GA to use for both organic and paid search volumes that would be comparable to the Google Adwords keyword tool. Thanks Neil
