Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Is there value in a presence on them?
-
I have a client (professional practice) whose father is a marketing professor. He is pushing the client that he should have a professional page on social sites. While I believe having FB likes, shares, Tweet links, +1, etc. on the page, I really am ambivalent about building pages specifically for social media sites.
For some of you who have tracked the efficacy of these it would be great to know your pros and cons. -
Hi Robert
Apologies for the late reply. beena crazy few days here in South Africa
well lets put this into context. Having a Facebook presence and advertising on facebook using a PPC or CPM campaign are two different entities.
I agree, from my experience, advertising a product for lead generation on Facebook for instance has been a waste of time and doesd not convert well at all to sales.
I feel generally facebook users are there to have fun and pass the time rather than look for great deals and buy things.
However, Facebook and using Facebook advertsfor branding and general brand awereness is pretty powerfull.
Imagine the ripple effect of having 1000 users, who view your status and actually like it or comment or view it a few times. This gets fed into on to their wall and is seen by another 100 friends. So potentially you can reach 100 000 people with minimum effort. Once again, you arent selling anything but you are building your brand awerness. Zero cost, all to gain.
All networks have their pro's and con's. You need to find what is important for the long term benift of your client and then strategise from their. perform your own tettst and start compiling data for that particular client on social media platforms.
I hope that this helps youa little more

Thanks Kyle,
We utilize social bookmarking on almost every client site we have and you are correct. My interest is much more based on just not seeing the efficacy in building site type pages for clients on social media. I want them to spend their money where they get a bang for the buck so that is the reason for the questions.thanks again.

Stefano,
Again thanks for the responses, but..... The "social media is a must" and pro's outweigh the con's statements don't really provide depth. Is there anything in your experience that says: this is where it makes a difference. Something more tangible? I know all the arguments around everyone is there, its how people communicate, building buzz, etc. What i am after is more numbers, etc. - Bob's Tire House started an FB page and with no other advertising built a viral community and sold a thousand tires (yes it is an exaggeration, but purely for illustration of what I am looking for).
Or, an FB page when implemented as such will provide X or Y to your business. Just understand I am looking for a prove up on X or Y. Not being a pain on purpose, just bugged by this question.

I think this really is helpful. It would appear, that in order to make it work, there must also be someone who is monitoring it to insure a client is responded to? I would wonder about a time/value problem here.
With our clients, some do and some do not have say a FB page. (For all professional practices we encourage them being on LinkedIn). How do you judge the cost vs. benefit of monitoring this? -
Thanks for the response,
While I understand it is a "must," my question is, "why is it a must?" Just because people are on facebook, etc? I am wondering if there is any data around what verticals are able to quantify anything from same?
The biggest thing I have seen from (FB for example) is that when doing contextual ads on it the leads generated were purely worthless. I can see where a Groupon type ad, etc. would work, but am really ambivalent to spending a client's $ (even though I am making money by doing same) when I cannot see a real return. Even with throwing out the direct response or ROI piece, I do not see where a physician, attorney, manufacturing company, etc benefits from having a specific FB page.Thoughts

I agree social media is a most... depending on the niche. My normal suggestion for people trying to ease into social media is to use social bookmarking (add this, share this, etc). With social bookmarking you can see what channels your users prefer and based on your analytics you can make educated steps with your social media plan.

Mobile apps are a must if you are doing this, I agree.
-
Yes, i totally agree with you. You have to be pro-active but the pro's outweigh the cons.
look for tools like tweet deck to manage multiple accounts or mobile apps for notifications and to interact on the spot.
-
The biggest con for me is the anticipated response time on questions. When people ask a question on a Social Media site they expect an answer in less than 15 minutes. Sometimes I happen to be sitting at my computer, and that's no problem. However, most questions happen early in the morning, and late at night (auto industry). Because of that, I'm typically not conscious or coherent enough to answer questions about towing capacity, cubic feet of space, etc.
However, I've been able to connect with some people on a personal level, and have been able to get them to come in for service and repairs.
Bottom line, it can improve your bottom line, but the chance to lose a customer is there, as well.

Hi Robert
In this day and age, have a social media presence is an absolute must. Yes, social media can take a lot of work to get up and running but allows a great platform to interact with the public, not only potential clients.
Dont try and sell services, but rather sell your mission statement
As for Linkedin...its a must for any professional looking to network. The reason being is that people on Linkedin are specifically looking to do business and make business connevtions.
The key is to be trans[parent, give as much information as possible and have fun while doing it.
Hope this helps.

How to remove an unwanted Twitter account
Hello Mozers We have just discovered a rogue social media account for our company which was set up back in 2015. It has our company name with 'ltd' tacked onto the end to make a unique handle. Unfortunately as we don't know who set it up, we don't have any of the usernames and passwords necessary to go into it to potentially remove it. Does any one have any suggestions? Thanks Catherine

Value in content from website being shared across social media?
If I write content (small career advice quotes) on my website and I distribute across Twitter and FB I assume my site will get the full credit (from an SEO perspective) since that is where the content was originally uploaded. However, will I still get SEO credit for being active on social media, or will Google view it as duplicate content and evaluate that I am not active on social media? thank you

Facebook comments plugin moderation
Hello I am trying to integrate the Facebook social plugin http://developers.facebook.com/docs/...gins/comments/ into my website. So far I have included the HTML 5 code in my site and it is visible, but how can I moderate the comments before they are being posted? I have included into the header of the root of my site but when viewing the comments area on a page within my site I cannot see any moderation options? Hope this makes sense and someone can help Many Thanks

Facebook Spam - Suggestions?
We put a blog post up on our Facebook page earlier today. Within an hour, there were 560 likes and over 4,000 comments. While that sounds great, that is nowhere in the universe of normal. Almost all of that was spam (there were no services that we engaged in to bring likes/comments). So, has anyone else here been hit by rapid-fire Facebook spam? Any thoughts on what to do - leave it alone, delete the post, filters, etc.? Would love the advice of the Moz community. Thanks guys!

Twitter Personas
How to best set up Twitter personas... Connecting with different groups of people, for different clients. There are even crossovers most notably in Graphic Design Industry 2 different clients want to engage with Graphic Designers. Would prefer to handel all through my own account but don't want people to think huh SEO guy he just cares about links. Best way forwards seem to be to set up client specific accounts? Any thoughts?

Facebook likes - how can I tell how many likes a product page has?
Without actually going to each product page and looking at the number next to the 'Like' button, is there any way of finding a list of all your pages and the number of Facebook likes on each?

Disqus Vs. Wordpress Vs Facebook VS Comment Plug Ins
I'd like to see if the community could offer some feedback on how to 'step up' the comments on our blog. I've been looking over various options, and of course you can find as many pros as you can cons for each of these. In addition to our website, we have a very active, and engaged Facebook page, so my first thought is to install Facebook comments on our blog. However I believe you loose the SEO benefit form the comments (I'm not sure how much SEO benefit you get form the comments anyways if the post content is optimized), people can't comment unless they have, and want to use, their Facebook account (although I've seen some work arounds that allow people to use either or), people don't get notified when there is a reply to their comment, I don't 'own' any of the comments, Facebook does...so if I ever decide to change comment systems, I loose all the comments, and I loose the ability to send a 'welcome email' to first time commenters (which has been very effective for newsletter sign ups.) Facebook sends a large number of traffic to my site, and since there are so many people on our Facebook page, I feel this may be a good option. One other concern I have by allowing people to use either Facebook comments or Wordpress comments is the use of my top commenter plug in. This plug in has been very useful in increasing our blog comment engagement. We are even going to be rewarding our top commenter each month. I'm assuming if you use Facebook comments by itself, or the combo Facebook / wordpress solution I've found online, I wouldn't be able to use a top commenter plugin, since this is pulling the data from Wordpress, correct? One thing I don't understand is I've seen a plug in (I think it's Facebook simple connect) that allows comments to 'sync' between those comments that appear on the blog, and those that appear on wordpress. I'm not sure how this works. Does Facebook recognize a certain url being posted on the Facebook page, and associates that with the same url on the blog, and simply syncs the two? In other words can people comment on the blog (via Facebook comment) and comment on the Facebook page, and simply continue to conversation from either location? This would be a pretty neat feature, but I'm not sure if that's how it works. Also, if I use Facebook comments solely, does anyone know what happens to all of the previous comments left on the blog? Do they all go away? In other words, does it make it seem like I have zero comments on any posts? This wouldn't be good. I know a lot of people use and like the Disqus comment system, but I've read lots of horror stories about loosing comments, blogs being slowed down tremendously, etc. I like how disquis allows you to 'like' someones post. I feel like this would help increase community engagement, but not sure how much. (We already get a fair number of comments as it, I'm just trying to make the experience better.) I'd like for people to be able to post pictures / images in the comments, and I think disqus allows for there (though there may be plug ins that allow this on the native wordpress comments.) Finally I'm wondering if there are some good comment plug ins that would allow me to stay using wordpress native comments, but step up the comments. For instance, using pictures in comments, being abel to rank comments (sort of like the thumbs up / down here on SEOmoz) and any other cool plug ins that help promote engagement. I hope you guys can offer some insight as to the best direction to go with the comments. Thanks in advance!
