Low Domain Authority
Hi
Our Domain Authority has dropped recently from 29 > 23 - which is really low.
I wondered if anyone had any ideas of why this might be? http://www.key.co.uk/en/key
I'm seeing ranking/traffic improvements for SEO & I'm not currently building any bad backlinks, I did a sweep to Disavow any bad ones last Oct.
I am planning to add good quality links, but is there anything else I can do to improve the authority?

RE: Text to Code Ratio & SEO
Brilliant thank you
I always get this flagged in my audits & just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything.
-
RE: Text to Code Ratio & SEO
Yes I've only used schema and this was implemented before my time, so I may change the code
Thanks

RE: Text to Code Ratio & SEO
Ok great, our dev team have messed our schema up so I need to sort this out
Is there a preference over data-vocab vs. schema?
Thanks!

RE: Text to Code Ratio & SEO
Great thank you, we're trying to add more content to things like product/category pages but getting the balance is sometimes hard.
I think I have about 600 pages being flagged as having a low text to code ratio, but just wanted to make sure I am focusing on my top priorities when it comes to ranking factors
What do you think about schema? I read that it wasn't a ranking signal. but then saw it's included in the periodic table of seo success signals, under 'do your pages use structured data to enhance listings?
Thanks

RE: Google & Site Architecture
Hi
Oh not to worry, there's no rush
It's a development issue, but they are currently reviewing this and we have requested lower levels in the menu structure.

Text to Code Ratio & SEO
Hi
Has anyone had experience of updating their text to code ratio if its too high & whether this has much impact on SEO performance?
I am trying to prioritise tasks & wondered if this is something which should be higher on my list.
Thank you

Data Vocab or Schema?
Hi
I've always used schema mark up in previous companies, however product pages on the site I'm currently working on are in data vocab.
I cant find much about data vocab, so is it best to move away from this?
I need to update the mark up on our product pages - so want the best mark up for this
Thank you

Schema Mark up - Product Listing Pages
Hi
I know you can add product schema to a product page, but can you add mark up to a product listing/category page? If so, which one would you use? I saw the item list mark up but didn't think this was relevant.
Thank you

Paid vs. Organic for Brand
HI
We've seen a huge drop paid campaigns for impressions on brand terms YOY - 37,140 vs. 792. Our impression share is still high.
Organic is higher this year for impressions also.
An agency manage created the campaigns for us and can't seem to find a reason, but the drop is huge - it seems like it's just people not searching but we haven't seen this in organic - could it be organic showing instead of paid ads for brand terms?
Paid is fairly new to me, so just doing some fact finding
Thanks!

RE: WT.Srch - parameter recorded as organic traffic?
Great thanks, we use to but we don't anymore.
Why would this show under my organic segment if it's paid?
I'll look over the resources thank you

RE: Mass Referencing Supplier Product Info & SEO
Hi Sean
This is helpful thanks.
Did you see any drop in authority/rankings when loading them in unoptimised to start with?
Thanks!

Mass Referencing Supplier Product Info & SEO
Hi
I have a mass referencing project which will mean taking between 1000-2000 SKUs from a supplier, taking all their content & loading it onto our site.
I need to make a case for not doing this from an SEO perspective. As these are pages I want to rank.
I'm going to push for optimising titles/meta titles before they're loaded in.
However if not, I may be forced to load in the products as they are & go back to optimise everything - does anyone see a real issue with this?
I know there are so many 'similar' descriptions of products on ecommerce sites & across the web, so how does Google deal with these? The pages won't be identical as the templates are different, but maybe 100-200 words of descriptions could be until we work through them.
Although this isn't ideal - what are the implications?
The problem for me is, the managers just want the products on the site, without much thought regarding organic traffic/categorisation initially.
Thanks!

WT.Srch - parameter recorded as organic traffic?
Hi
I have a lot of revenue for yesterdays organic traffic attributed to ?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=slGO&kw=8695
When looking in Google at what this means I have found this:
To ensure you can accurately differentiate traffic from paid placements from organic traffic, use the WT.srch=1 parameter in the URL from the referring search engine for all paid searches. This parameter always has a value of 1. Organic searches do not include this parameter in the URL. Note that Search Engine Campaign results are displayed in the Marketing > Search Engine >section of the Webtrends Analytics 9 Complete template, not in the Campaigns section.
We no longer use webtrends, what I need to know is, did this traffic/revenue come from organic or paid?

Google Algo Update
Hi
I'm trying to look into how the update in Oct - Nov affected our site.
It's positive with us ranking for more keywords, but I wondered if anyone knew what had changed.
For example, one of our pages ranked for 291 keywords in October, now it ranks for 406 keywords. We've done nothing to this page in that time.
I just want to try and understand what's happening with the algorithm a little more (although I'm sure everyone does :). Does anyone have any insights?
Thanks!

RE: Href Lang tags in audit
Great thank you. I'm just unsure as to why they're flagging as errors anyway
Thank you!

RE: Href Lang tags in audit
Great thank you, Ill check the bing tracking too!

Href Lang tags in audit
Hi
I am getting a couple of issues flag with my href lang tags, but when I manually check the pages I can't see the issues.
Issue 1. No self referencing href lang tag example URL - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/300kg-capacity-manutan-mobile-lift-table-lift-height-860mm-125h204
(these are SKU pages with duplicate content, so we have canonicals pointing to the main product page)
Issue 2. Conflicting hreflang and rel=canonical - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/500kg-capacity-manutan-mobile-lift-table-lift-height-945mm-127h204
I have checked the source code of the pages with errors against the pages which don't have errors and they look the same - so I am unsure what's wrong?

RE: Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
I think I'd have to request these. I know it's something I need to look at, but I;m not sure how high a priority I should put on it.
Do you think it would make a huge difference if they were stopped from being crawled?

Paragraphs/Tables for Content & SEO
Hi
Does anyone know if Google prefers paragraphs over content in a table, or doesn't it make much difference?
-
How can I stop my facets being crawled?
Hi
If my facets are being crawled, how can I stop this? Or set them up so they are SEO friendly - this is new to me as I haven't had to deal with lots of facets in the past.
Here's an example of a page on the site - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lift-tables
Here's an example of a facet URL - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lift-tables#facet:-1002779711011711697110,-700000000000001001651484832107103,-700000000000001057452564832109109&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:5&pageView:list&
I've been trying to read up on URL parameters etc, I'm new to it so it's taking some time to understand
Any advice would be great!
-
RE: Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
I am confused as to whether they're even being crawled if Google ignores everything after the #
Perhaps they're being crawled but not indexed...
-
RE: Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
Thanks, I'll do that as a starting point
-
RE: Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
Hi John,
Yeh I'm just trying to understand it all
Yes that's what I mean with the facet link you've shown.
I just want to ensure I'm not wasting Googlebot's time crawling facets which don't need to be crawled.
I'm not so worried about the duplicate pages as there's a canonical, but I don't think these facets are SEO friendly - I'm trying to work out how to make them SEO friendly
-
Facets Being Indexed - What's the Impact?
Hi
Our facets are from what I can see crawled by search engines, I think they use javascript - see here http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers
I want to get this fixed for SEO with an ajax solution - I'm not sure how big this job is for developers, but they will want to know the positive impact this could have & whether it's worth doing.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
I haven't encountered this before so any help is welcome

RE: Facet Values as Anchor text
Hi John,
Thank you for your answer
If I check in search console, we aren't getting more pages indexed than we have on the site. I'll have a read of your article.
I only noticed these in screaming frog. Are there any other checks you think I need to do?

RE: Internal Anchor Text Links
Hey
Sure i know you need some anchor text, but is there a limit? Will it be spammy if there's too much, or is it going to help rankings?
Thanks!
-
Internal Anchor Text Links
Hi
How important are internal anchor text links & rankings?
I'm researching competitors and am seeing a lot of internal anchor text links with keywords helping them rank - but they have these links in their menu which at the moment isn't possible for us.
We can include our top level 1 categories, but nothing below this in the top navigation
Thanks!
-
Facet Values as Anchor text
Hi
I've reviewing our internal linking structure & have found that the facets/filter buttons on a category, are crawled and have anchor text to each link, for example:
The anchor text to filter the product listing results by those under £50 would be:
| Facet Value Less than £50.00 (15) Less than £50.00 (15) |
This also has the source URL & destination URL of http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers
I haven't come across this before - is this an issue?

RE: Http vs. https - duplicate content

Thanks this is helpful, I'll check out the article! I need to put a case together for moving to https: so that will be my next step

Alt Tags - how important for SEO?
Hi
I know alt tags should be on an image, however at the moment I have 23,741 missing on the site, how important are these? It's a big project for someone to update & I need some justification
Thanks Mozzers

Http vs. https - duplicate content
Hi
I have recently come across a new issue on our site, where https & http titles are showing as duplicate.
I read https://moz.com/community/q/duplicate-content-and-http-and-https however, am wondering as https is now a ranking factor, blocked this can't be a good thing?
We aren't in a position to roll out https everywhere, so what would be the best thing to do next? I thought about implementing canonicals?
Thank you

Search Results Pages Blocked in Robots.txt?
Hi
I am reviewing our robots.txt file. I wondered if search results pages should be blocked from crawling?
We currently have this in the file
/searchterm* Is it a good thing for SEO?

RE: Changing categorisation effect on SEO
Thanks for the reply.
I can definitely do this, they're both important, which is why we want to split them. In terms of SEO I also think having defined categories and moving them higher up in the site structure is worth doing - I just have no stats to prove this as it hasn't been done before
Thanks!

Changing categorisation effect on SEO
Hi
I work on an ecommerce shop & we've discussed changing some of out categories.
We have one named cupboards & lockers, but want to split this out, so we have Cupboards then Lockers so customers can browse through our main navigation like this.
For SEO I know initially our rankings will be affected, but long term moving categories up a level will be an improvement & will be more relevant - has anyone does this before and could provide any advice?

RE: Pagination & View all option on Ecommerce site
Hi
Thank you for the reply.
Would you consider a view all option a good pagination experience or is there something else I should be looking at?

Pagination & View all option on Ecommerce site
Hi
I want to add a view all option to our category pages as recommended by Google and to make it easier for the customer.
I'm not sure how long this will take our developer, but is this an action that is worth doing from an SEO point of view?
Will it add value? For me it will have value, but in terms of SEO actions should it be one I prioritise?
I have issues with our pagination and think this would be the quickest way to solve it - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches
Any help appreciated

RE: Javascript search results & Pagination for SEO
Hi Jake
Thank you for your input.
I've looked in what might be blocked & I still have a couple of .js files blocked, they're AJAX e.g.
http://www.key.co.uk/wcsstore/dojo18/dijit/nls/loading.js
http://www.key.co.uk/wcsstore/dojo18/dojo/fx/easing.js
These aren't in the robots.txt files - do you think it's worth finding & unblocking them?
Thank you

RE: Redirects Being Removed...
Hi
Yes I agree, to be honest most of our product pages won't have many backlinks, if any so I still want the 301 included on the pages which don't.
Thanks

Has Moz update their index again?
We've lost a bit of domain authority - has anything been update?

RE: SEO - Google Local Listing & Same Day Delivery
Great thank you.
I haven't looked into local optimisation before so this helps!
-
RE: SEO - Google Local Listing & Same Day Delivery
This is really helpful thank you.
We do have a huge range of products, so it would be hard to choose just one.
Would this be a case of still optimising the delivery page?
-
SEO - Google Local Listing & Same Day Delivery
Hi
We are looking to offer same day delivery if you're in a 20 mile radius to us. I'm trying to do some research on how to optimise this for Google organic listings.
Would this be the same as optimising for a local business listing?
I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!

RE: Google & Site Architecture
Thank you very much for your replies & advice
Here is an example of our site structure, our URL structure is very simple, nothing sits within a folder.
So if I want to rank this page - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/personal-protection-equipment-lockers
The structure at present is:
Home > Cupboards & Lockers > (linked from main nav) > Lockers (linked from main nav) > PPE Lockers - Linked from Lockers page not in main nav.
In order to better rank the PPE lockers page (the page does need better onpage optimisation) I was thinking of product additional content, user guide/blogs - linking to the page this way.
My struggle is, I don't have the ability to control the top navigation - it's automatic and won't show links to level 3 pages.

RE: Redirects Being Removed...
Thanks
Do you see it as a problem if there is not a dedicated 404 page which all old pages are redirected to?
