Hmm, that is an interesting thought. It is automatically added by X-Cart, but I will do some spot checking to make sure.

New URL structure caused a HUGE drop?
I have started working with a client who did an upgrade on their e-commerce sive in May of last year. It totally changed the URL structure and they didn't redirect old URLs or do any of the things they should have. Not unexpectedly they they went from about 300 visitors a day to 0 for then rose up to maybe 50 and have remained there ever since.
There were some major onsite issues including about 15000 internal links that 302 back to the site. In any case I have fixed most of the onsite problems and worked on a little better categorization + content optimization, etc.
We have only been working on this for about 30 days and organic traffic is up and they are ranking for much better keywords, but I expected a little quicker rise.
Here is a screenshot out of GA of their descent. Its pretty rapid.
I dont think it makes sense to redirect their old URLs at this point since most of them have been deindexed for 10+ months. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get back to their previous level. The domain actually has decent authority and link profile, etc.
Is this just going to be a slow climb back? Any thoughts?

RE: Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Yeah I just feel like if SEO people put half the effort they put into tricking Google, into doing SEO the right way and creating value that they could have one hell of an SEO product.
What you are essentially looking to do is create web spam.
It seems like a lot of effort for something that may work for a whille but will almost surely be figured out eventually and doesn't bring any value to your clients.

RE: Which Directory Sites to Choose?
You should put that in a new question and I'll bet it would get more eyes on it.
I've seen it done a lot but not sure as to how effective it is. I would think its pretty easy for google to figure out. Especially if they are all new domains registered to you and hosted on one c block or even the same IP address.
I think to do it where it wouldnt raise obvious flags would be expensive and you are still just getting links from new sites with little/no authority so not sure its worth it.
My guess is Google would figure it out anyway.

RE: How should I resolve duplicate Google Places listings?
In my opinion you should claim both listings so you can at least control them until it gets resolved. The problem you with with deactivating either one of them is potentially losing any authority from the deactivated listing. Thats why I recommend contacting Google to merge them. But a good short term fix is to claim both listings and update them to have same/similar info, but you are still potentially splitting citation authority over 2 listings potentially.

RE: Why do I have one page showing as two url's?
I am inclined to think you must be linking to it somewhere if it is showing up in a crawl. Export your crawl to a csv and search for it and check the referring page.
-
RE: How should I resolve duplicate Google Places listings?
Log into your places account and go to your places page. There is a link to "report a problem." Click that link and explain what the issue is.
Here is the google article on dealing with this problem.http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=183009
It can take several weeks for them to get around to correcting this so be patient.

RE: What is the best practice for changing a url of an existing page
1. It's no guarantee but it's a good place to start. I would reccomend it as a best practice.
2. You could either change the name and 301 redirect the old page to the new one and 9x% of the link juice will pass. The other option is to leave both versions up and add a rel canonical tag to both pages. You would want to have the same tag on both pages referencing your preferred version. If you dont mind having 2 versions I would go with canonical, but you will have to remember to update content of multiple pages which could be problematic on a large scale if not using a content management system. Either solution is acceptable though.
Update - Also remember to update any internal/nav links you may have and any external links that you have any control over.

RE: Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Hi Sean,
I guess I am being a little black and white there. I would try and get listed in any directories that your competitors are listed in that show authority in OSE. It may or may not do you any good but it wont hurt.
Here is Yahoo Directory, submit link.
https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro/
I guess what I am saying is that I would limit my time submitting to directories and try to use that time doing something that ads value, like participating in a community. It will pay you back way more than just pure SEO value and directories just aren't a good use of time or money in any large quantity.
Also check these links out for more info (the fact that SEOmoz has not dedicated ANY resources to updating this list or really discussing directories at all since 2008 is a good indicator of what they think of directories.)
-
RE: Which Directory Sites to Choose?
If you can get into dmoz (impossible? maybe) and Yahoo sites they are worth while. Unless you are just have absolutely no links I think directories are pretty useless anymore.
If you are looking for quick easy links, maybe spend some time in some forums answering questions related to your business. you get a signature link (for what it's worth) and if you add value as a contributer, you can see some REAL referral traffic.
I would not pay for many directories.
Find some good communities and participate.

RE: Google News not indexing .index.html pages
Hmmm, that is strange! Check a cached version of one of your URLs to make sure they new version is in the index. If it is, maybe you should switch to option 3.
I am not sure what if any the implications would be of leaving it the way you have it.
Since it is in 2 different areas of search I am not sure that duplicate content issues apply if you were to just leave it be.
-
RE: Bing Cache
There is no search operator, but you can access the cached version in the search results. Just search "url:websiteurl.com" then click the arrow > and it will open up options for the page. There is a link to view the cached version. See the pic below.
The site: search operator works just like it does in Google on Bing!

RE: Javascript funtion as link? Why not show up?
Hi Rich, JavaScript links are an issue! There is a seriousvrisk that this link will never be counted the way it stands. Here is a recent post on this. http://www.seomoz.org/qa/view/41582/javascript-links Also the webmasterbis not being entirely honest with you. They may be linking out that way in an effort to sculpt their own PageRank, preserving it for themselves instead of their members. I would be irritated by this if I were you.

GA dropping source due to 3rd party checkout?
So I am trying to track ecommerce transactions on a Prostores site and GA is dropping the source because the checkout is on prostores domain instead of the store domain. All ecommerce transactions show a source of the actual website as a referral. I've read googles documentation on tracking across multiple domains but just can't quite get it right.
Can anyone help me out?
Here is my tracking code:

RE: Why google index my IP URL
That is normal i think. You have to fix this. It is a dup content nightmare. It wouldn't hurt to add rel canonical also although it shouldn't matter if you 301.
Google will eventually stop crawling the IP urls once they realize the correct URL.
Did you submit a sitemap too?

RE: Experiences with event rich snippets?
I have heard of this problem before. I was about to pitch a client of setting up snippets in their ecommerce site but decided againt it because I didnt want to be held resoponsible when they invest in the development hours and Google refuses to display them for a year.
Is this common? Anyone else had similar experiences.

RE: How does the "first link" rule work with the "reasonable surfer patent" when it comes to the main navigation for a website?
DO NOT add nofollow to your navigation! It still dilutes the link juice you pass out, it just doesn't actually pass the juice. It is like drilling a hole in your boat. Totally wasted link juice, for internal pages that should be getting link juice. The wasted PR doesnt go anywhere when you do that, it's just wasted.
-
RE: Prevent link juice to flow on low-value pages
As I understand it nofollow still dilutes your link juice even though it does not pass PR (theoretically).
Google made this announcement to combat PR sculpting in 2009. Here is a post from Rand about it.
Unlsee something has changed that I am not aware of you could link in an iFrame and Google will not see it, nor will it dilute your PR passed out.

RE: Too many links!
Absolutely agree that site navigation is an issue. Not really great for visitors of SEs. I would look at a new theme with better navigation.

RE: GoDaddy SEO Services?
Nothing is free and you get what you pay for. If they think that $6/month is going to do anything for their SEO they are kidding themselves.
This is purely an upsell for GoDaddy. They are understandably trying to increase their average invoice by attaching other services, but this one won't add any value.
-
RE: When should you turn off redirects to your new domain?
NEVER!
The only downside is the $9.95 you pay to keep the registration. The downside to turning it off are many. You lose the PR that is is passing, even if there is no traffic coming from that old domain it still passes PR! Keep it forever!

RE: Google News not indexing .index.html pages
They seem to meet these requirements. The only one that is a problem is requirement #3, but it clearly states that is waived with News sitemaps which Matteo said they submitted.
With that said I do like Matteo's option #1 better than the naming convention they chose to go with.

RE: Google News not indexing .index.html pages
It does sound weird, but I am not sure that search operator works in Google News.
Here is a simple test. Search Google News for "Google"
The second story I see is http://phandroid.com/2011/04/22/will-spotify-be-google-musics-savior/
However a Google News search for "inurl:will-spotify-be-google-musics-savior" returns no results.
Clearly the story is indexed!

RE: Google News not indexing .index.html pages
I had another thought too. Just because the pages say they are indexed in Google WMT, doesn't mean the new content including the new canonical tags have been crawled or added to the index yet.
I recently did a similar project adding canonical tags to an ecommerce site. The new URLs are only showing up correctly in the search results maybe 10% of the time, even for pages I know have been crawled and I submitted a week ago. The important thing is that more URLs are updated each day.
I dont believe they throw out their index the first time they crawl an established page and something has changed. I believe the index gets changed as they continue to crawl they compare versions and index data based on multiple crawl agregates, especially if it is for existing pages that have been in the index for a while. So in other words, if they compare 20 recent crawls and only see 1 version as being different, they may not throw out the old version right away until they crawl it multiple times and see that the the new version exists, say 5 or 10 of the most recent 20 crawls. BTW I don't have any data to back that up just my personal observation/theory.

RE: Which Shopping Cart is best for SEO? Magento vs. X-Cart
Yeah, thats good for a small ecommerce site.
Not practical for an Enterprise solution though.
-
RE: Google News not indexing .index.html pages
If you used the rel canonical tag properly and only submitted sitemap yesterday, its just a waiting game. You will get crawled and indexed properly soon.

RE: What is the best solution for printable product pages (duplicate content)?
I think I will go with canonical.
Just a thought why would I put all the fules in a subdirectory instead of just blocking products.php?printable=Y
I guess it would be the same thing I think?
-
What is the best solution for printable product pages (duplicate content)?
What do you think is the best solution for preventing duplicate content issues on printable versions of product pages? The printable versions are identical in content.
Disallow in Robots.txt?
Meta Robots No Index, Follow?
Meta Robots No Index No Follow?
Rel Canonical?

Should I move x-cart installation or 301 redirect?
We have an existing e-commerce site built on x-cart. The default store location is www.site.com/store.
The domain root however is just a static HTML page (currently using mainly graphics) and a nav menu.
What would be a better option:
1. Move the install location to the root directory and get rid of the static HTML page. We would have to manually 301 redirect all the old pages to the new location. Not sure if there are negative implications with that.
2. Just optimize the HTML landing page? Seems like it is better to have products and categories as close to the root domain as possible...
3. 301 redirect the domain to www.site.com/store/ and optimize the homepage within the store. This option means we dont have to worry about 2000 redirects or the hassle of moving the store.
Anyone had any experience with this and suggestions?

RE: Product ratings causing 302 redirect problem
Ok so I am trying to figure out the best way to add 50,000 links to the robots.txt file and future proof it so we dont have to keep adding manually to the file whenever a new product is added. I am not all that familar with x-cart.
Here is how the urls i want to block are formated...
website.com/store/product.php?mode=add_vote&productid=XXXXXX&vote=100"
Would adding "Disallow: /product.php" work?
Or should I "Disallow: /product.php?mode=add_vote&productid" <---will that work?
Would this have any consequences I am not thinking of?

Product ratings causing 302 redirect problem
I am working on an ecommerce site and my crawl report came back with 7000+ 302 redirects and maxed out at 10,000 pages because of all the redirects. The site really only has maybe 1500 pages (dynamic content aside).
After looking into it a little more I see it is because of the product rating system. They have a star rating system that kinda looks like amazons. The only problem is that each star is a link to a dynamic address that records the vote and then 302's back to the original page the vote was cast from.
So virtually every page on this site links out anywhere from 15 to 45 times and 302's back to itself, losing virtually all of its PR. Am I correct in that assumption or am I missing something? I don't see the links being blocked by robots.txt or noindex, nofollowed. Also it is an anonymous rating system where a rating can be cast from any category page displaying a product or any product page. To make matters worse every page links to a printable version which duplicates the issue by repeating the whole thing over again.
So assuming I am correct that is site has a major PR leak on virtually every page, what is the best recommendation to fix this.
1. Block all of those links in robots.txt,
2. no index, nofollow these links or
3. put the rating system behind a submit button or disallow anon ratings
4. something else???
Looking at their product ratings on the site virtually everything is between 2-3 starts out of 5 and has about the same number of votes except less votes on deeper pages. I dont believe this is real at all since this site gets almost no traffic and maybe 1 sale a week, there is no way that any product has been rated 50 times. I think the crawler is voting as it crawls and doing it 5 times for every product which is why everything is rated 2.5 out of 5.
This is an x-cart site in case anyone cares.
Any suggestions?

Is this site penalized?
So I am working on a potential new client and they run several very well established and well ranking ecommerce sites. They have 1 site which is new and underperforming which they want me to "start" on as a trial. The idea being that if they like the progress I would take over SEO on the other sites. After a little research I am concerned that this site may be have a penalty. The site is www.discoverhookah.com
The MOZrank and MOZtrust are actually pretty good considering the site is 6 months old, but if you look at the links they are ALL junk. They seems to be some reciprocal linking as well. I believe this is something they have done on their other sites and been ok with because they are 10+ years old and very trusted, however for a new site this link profile worries me.
I do not have their analytics yet but looking at their traffic in compete.com shows a HUGE drop off shortly after the site went up (like from 2500 to under 100 visitors). I dont really trust compete.com's numbers outside of being and good indicator for trends, but it has me concerned.
The client did tell me they are getting virtually no traffic. I am waiting on the crawl report to confirm its not a crawl or onsite problem but i dont think it is.
I have 2 concerns:
1. I am taking this site on the cheap in order to establish a successful project, so I can work on their other sites, and I dont want to walk into a losing situation on the cheap!
2. I believe their webmaster is following some misguided SEO strategies but she has been with them for a long time. I dont think she wants to do theor SEO anyway, as she is very busy with maintenance and development, but if I could prove a penalty it would go a long way in helping me win the whole account from an SEO standpoint.
