RE: How does the suggested website functionality work in Safari?
What evidence is that based on John?
- Nobody uses my iPad and I haven't changed any preferences
- I never really look at the bbc sport page that it suggests, if I do look at the bbc site it will be the football section and my search would be for "bbc football"
- Many of the sites that I visit regularly never get suggested

How does the suggested website functionality work in Safari?
I don't seem to be able to find out much information on this one. Safari often shows a suggested website as you start typing a query into the browser.
I've uploaded a screenshot to help show what I mean.

RE: Moz Showing 1500+ errors on my site but webmaster showing 130ish. Whats going on?
Sounds like you have a list of issues to fix either way
-
RE: My Google Author Pic Disappeared
I have noticed this problem over the past few days too. If I search in Chrome there are no author pics, but if I perform the same search in Firefox they appear. I'm not going to change anything, I don't think this is anything which requires a fix.

RE: Mobile header and Schema Tags
Sorry if this wasn't clear.. there is a different version of the header which is pulled in for the mobile version. The structure and contents of the desktop header was too complicated to use on a mobile, the client didn't want to amend the design of the desktop site. Only the header section is different, everything else is the same code.

Mobile header and Schema Tags
We have recently made a website I work on responsive. This involved taking their original desktop site and then making it work on mobiles/tablets. Due to the nature of their existing header we are serving a different version to mobiles/tablets.
Do the schema tags which are on the desktop header need to be added to the mobile version or are they just needed on the desktop code?

What content is picked up when you use the testing tool?

How can you measure competitor visitor volumes?
I am trying to understand how I can use SEOMOZ to ascertain the volume of visitors a competitor will achieve either daily, weekly or monthly.

How accurate are the index figures in GWT?
I've been looking at a site in GWT and the number of indexed urls is very low when compared with the number or submitted urls on the xml sitemaps.
The site has several stores which are all submitted using different sitemaps.
When you perform a search in Google, eg
site:domain.com/store1
site:domain.com/store2
site:domain.com/store3
The results are similar to the webmaster urls.
However, looking in the analytics for landing pages used for organic traffic from Google shows a much higher number of pages.
If these pages aren't indexed as reported in GMT, how could they be found in the results and be recorded as landing pages?

Strange indexing of multi language site
I've been looking at a site which has a strange ranking/indexing issue.
The website has several translated versions of the site for different languages and these translated pages seem to be outranking the UK pages in the UK search results.
All of the translated pages are in sub folders, eg
I cant work out how or why Google would see these pages with non english content as more relevant than the UK pages?
One thing I did notice is that there are no meta language tags on there. Could this be the issue?

RE: WordPress post indexation speed
The author tag should already be in there. It shows up when you use the tester tool: http://sht.tl/xGAw

RE: WordPress post indexation speed
The sitemaps are listed in the robots.txt file: blog.looksfishy.co.uk/robots.txt
They are also submitted to GWT. When I add a new post, the urls show up as being submitted but they dont get indexed

WordPress post indexation speed
Has anyone noticed any increases in the length of time it takes for WP posts to get indexed by Google?
I have a website with the following:
domain.com - CMS with lots of pages/content
blog.domain.com - subdomain for the blog using WP
It's odd.. the pages on the main site are indexed almost immediately. The posts on the blog are taking between 2-5 days.
The blog posts are all unique content, here's an example of a recent one:
-
Testing Google Tag Manager
Is there a way to test if the Google Tag Manager is set up correctly? Am I right in thinking that the only code that will be output on the page will be the actual embed code, eg:
SCRIPT REMOVED
Cant work out if there is an issue with what has been set in the account of if there is a problem with how the code has been added to the page..

RE: GeoIP and redirects
Thanks for the replies. I created a sitemap for each store last week. I added the links to the robots.txt and also submitted them to Google.
The SEO Moz site crawler now crawls the full site content, but the pages are still recorded as 302 redirects.
The GWT figures are completely wrong where it displays the number of indexed pages..
-
GeoIP and redirects
I have been looking at an ecommerce site that uses a GeoIP module to take users to the relevant store, eg:
domain.com/uk domain.com/us
domain.com/euro
domain.com/rowAfter using the SEO Moz site crawler, the GeoIP module is using 302 redirects to take users to the relevant page. So, domain.com 302s to domain.com/uk and so on.
What is the impact of this in terms of SEO? Only the US version of the site was crawled by the site crawler, presumably because this was due to the US version of the site being shown based on the IP address. Links to the other stores are clearly placed in the header of the site but they weren't crawled.
Thanks in advance

Subdomains vs ccTLD in International SEO
I'm interested to see if anyone has any additional thoughts or recent experience on subdomains vs ccTLD for International SEO.
An article I found on this site is from March 2011, so just wanted to check if this is still relevant?

RE: Yahoo Paid directory - Worth the Money?
"ethically" by buying links? SEO is funny
-
RE: Should I change my host
Maybe you could experiment with moving one of your sites and then see if that makes any difference?
It will be having an effect on your rankings, as proven by the number of dutch visitors to the site
-
RE: What's the best way to host video for SEO purposes?
dont host the video on your webserver... that will make stuff waaaaaaay slow!
-
RE: New Url Structure
There are words you could remove or swap for ones that have more semantic meaning. eg
/product - what does that mean? It could be anything
Are the same products listed in more than one category? That could cause problems with duplicattion.. it may be best to have a category structure
domain.com/category-name/subcategory-name
but then for a product:
-
Schema Tags Configuration - Ecommerce Category Pages
I'm semi confident that some schema tags are implemented correctly on our ecommerce category pages.. but I would just like to double check.
An example url http://www.freshcargo.co.uk/shoes
I have just fixed some errors using the Google rich snippets tool... but the thing I'm not sure about is why the prices are being displayed as seperate items
Thanks in advance

RE: Stop google indexing CDN pages
It sounds like you have set up your CDN slightly wrong.
After setting up a few like you have I realised that I was actually making a complete duplicate of the site rather than just the images or assets
I imagine you have your origin directory for the CDN in the public html folder.
Create a subdomain, set that as the origin.
Eg.. I'm working on this site at the moment: http://looksfishy.co.uk/
I have a subdomain called assets: http://assets.looksfishy.co.uk/
The cdn content: http://cdn.looksfishy.co.uk/
Files uploaded here:
http://assets.looksfishy.co.uk/species/holder/pike.jpg
Displayed here:
http://cdn.looksfishy.co.uk/species/holder/pike.jpg
Check the ip address on them.
It does make uploading images by ftp a bit of a faff, but does make your site better

RE: Extra Sub Directory
If your rankings are good then I would leave it as it is.. put it on the list of future plans and then change it if you do some major dev work that requires you to change urls
-
RE: Google Product Feeds - New Requirements
How are you creating the feed? is it all done manually?
If you arent already it would be a good idea to look into auto generating the feed, that way you would be able to set rules at say category and sub category level or take more information about the products from your product database.
The more information you get in the feed the better, eg will imporve the optimisation process.. and automating it should also mean it takes much less of your time to manage it
-
RE: Extra Sub Directory
I would say it depends what your rankings are like and also how many pages you will need to redirect.
If you leave it as it is you should put some content on the www.mysite.com/process/ page to stop people encoutering the 404, it will make the site more useful
-
RE: Good tools to compare site speed on different sites?
@Harald - thanks for the list of sites

RE: Any ideas?
And more duplicate content..
"Walking boots are possibly the most essential and personal piece of outdoor kit you can buy, but once you've found that perfect pair you'll want to keep them in tip-top shape."

-
RE: Any ideas?
There are quite a few things on page that could be improved: http://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.gear-zone.co.uk/oTasIFqU
You make the classic seo mistake by putting your logo inside an H1:
Gear-Zone
As already pointed out, some of the coding is a bit messy
There are also potential duplicate content issues: eg /outdoor-footwear
The content in the section "How to Clean and Reproof Walking Boots and Outdoor Footwear" is displayed on the category page and also by clicking through to the gear guide page.
I would re-write the content on the category pages so it is more unique.
-
RE: Dmoz.Org listings - how much more difficult can it be?
I think thats it's kind of ironic how long it takes to get listed in DMOZ..
I know lots and lots of people who havent been able to get listed in there... but then you look at some of the sites that are in there and they are complete garbage!
-
RE: Rankings Dropped
I think to get a better understanding you will need to provide more information.
Although you have a lot of pages that look the same, most websites use the same templates/layout across sections or areas. How unique is the content on these pages?
Has anything else on the site changed?
-
RE: Indexing an e-commerce site
how do you manage to pick up clients without having an understanding of how to optimise their site? seems a bit odd
-
RE: Preparation of website before Submitting to Paid Directories?
If you are going to go down the paid directory route then just check that you read all of the submission guidelines first.. each directory may have different rules on what they do/don't like.
I'm not a big fan of directory links and it's not something that I put a great deal of effort into.. there are lots of other ways to build links or encourage social sharing.
There are quite a few things on your site to look at.. I would work though all of the issues on here: http://gtmetrix.com/
-
RE: Static homepage content and javascript - is this technique obsolete?
It would be possible to have the text at the beginning of the html document but then display it further down using CSS, not java script.
I don't think there is a massive need to do something like this. In the past Google may not have indexed all of the content from a page, especially if the document size was very large. This position trick would ensure that the important SEO focused content would be indexed.. if you build your site properly and take into account the size, page load speed, make sure the code is clean etc then there should be no need to move the content around.
-
RE: Should I outsource any SEO work or can I do it all?
I would say it's like most things, if you can do it yourself then in the long term that might work best.. but then if you don't have time then it can pay to get some help.
Depending on how competetive your sector is, you may be able to pick up some good rankings with good quality content and strong on-page optimisation.
For your initial link building you should start by trying to identify the main sites in your area.. there will likely be some niche directory sites that you can submit to, and that should give you a kick start
One think to be wary of with link building is the types of sites where the links are built and also what happens if you cease working with the company - will these links that have been built stay in place or will they be removed?
-
RE: 301 redirect from root to /index.aspx
Why has the main domain been redirected to index.aspx? it makes no sense
-
RE: Canonicals for Real Estate
I would stick to optimising the main site.com/zip/99999 type pages
As the other ones have no particularly unique content and the fact that they arent permanent pages (eg when no listings) means you will never be able build links into them
-
RE: Difference between Webmaster and SEOMoz back-link stats?
There are quite a lot of posts about this.. OSE doesn't crawl every single page on the internet, so some links may not be listed/discovered. Even Google may not discover all of the links to your site.
Take the figures with a pinch of salt, try not to be so specific, but make sure that both figures are generally always increasing.

RE: How to prevent directory from being accessed by search engines?
shouldn't you put a slash at the end of the directory in the robots file?
you can create the robots file through the Google Webmaster Tools
-
RE: Redirect from old wordpress site to new php site? Best approach
redirect the pages in the .htaccess file.
rather than redirect them all to the homepage, you should redirect them to the most relevant page on the other site.
why are you getting rid of one site?

RE: Does Server Speed Effect SEO Rankings?
slow websites are rubbish.. even if it's not a ranking factor its pretty boring waiting for stuff to load!
without moving server you can still improve the code to make it faster:
