First Mozscape index of the year is live
I'm happy to announce, the first index of the year is out. We did have a smaller count of subdomains, but correlations are generally up and coverage of what's in Google looks better, too. We're giving that one a high five!
We've (hopefully) removed a lot of foreign and spam subdomains, which you might see reflected in your spam links section. (another woot!)
Here are some details about this index release:
- 145,549,223,632 (145 billion) URLs
- 1,356,731,650 (1 billion) subdomains
- 200,255,095 (200 million) root domains
- 1,165,625,349,576 (1.1 Trillion) links
- Followed vs nofollowed links
- 3.17% of all links found were nofollowed
- 63.49% of nofollowed links are internal
- 36.51% are external
- Rel canonical: 26.50% of all pages employ the rel=canonical tag
- The average page has 89 links on it
- 72 internal links on average
- 17 external links on average
Thanks!

RE: Can PPC harm SEO results, even if it's off-domain?
Josh,
Please do not throw TAGFEE around without fully understanding its meaning. It is fine to have a disagreement, and for the most part this is a wonderful discussion. You however are being quite condescending and not empathetic to others. I've warned you in the past, and this is a final warning.

RE: 10/14 Mozscape Index Update Details
Hi Joseph! I'm sure Rand will chime in as well, but I know our engineers are currently working on a write-up that explains the future of the index, plus some of the issues of the past. They're trying to get all the details in there, and hopefully we can get that published by early next week. What I know so far, is that they've fixed some issues and this index is looking much better. I'll let the engineers explain what that means though.

RE: 10/14 Mozscape Index Update Details
Hi Donna,
I think it's fair to feel that way, it's definitely frustrating on all ends. While we do try hard to be as open and upfront as we can with information, we can most definitely work harder on getting it out sooner. I also very much appreciate the kind words about the community, and that you took the time to leave your thoughts. I'm sure many folks feel the same way. I'll let Rand (or others) jump in and respond as well, but I wanted to say thanks!

RE: Just a test, please disregard. :D

Just a test, please disregard. :D
this is a test to see if this thing is on.

RE: MOZ Monthly Custom Report Question
Unfortunately right now there is not. We try to get them out as quickly as possible though. If you're having issues again this coming month, please email us at help[at]moz.com and we'll see if perhaps there's something specific going on with your campaigns.
-
RE: I can't pull September monthly report, only August available, please help?
Hi Francois!
All reports start running on the first of the month, but may not be complete until the 4th of the month. Plus, I see that you're in South Africa, so you may also simply be checking before the reports have finished on our end. If you don't see the report in the next 24 hours, send us an email at help[at]moz.com with the details of the campaign, and we'll dig into it! I hope this helps a bit.
Thanks!

RE: MOZ Monthly Custom Report Question
Hello there!
This is a great question, and one that can be a bit confusing. When you set up a monthly report in a campaign, we run all those reports on the 1st of the month, and start sending them out. It may take until the 4th of the month for all of them to run and get emailed and show up in your campaign.
If you don't see the report by the 5th (since it looks like you're in Australia), please send us an email at help[at]moz.com so we can dig into your account a bit more, and take a look at specific campaigns.
I hope this helps answer your question!

RE: Google Plus not loading...any ideas?
Hello! This can be a bit confusing especially if you have several accounts set up under your profile. First you'll want to track the profile, once that's set up, you'll add the specific page that you want to track. For example, in the image I've attached, I first set up my Google+ profile which is an admin on the Moz Google+ page. Then I went in and added the Moz Google+ page, after my profile was created. Hopefully the attached image and explanation will help! Please me me know if you have additional questions.

RE: Does Social Media hold value with SEO? If so then how?
Totally agree with Ken. I actually did a presentation recently about Social's influence on search, it might be a good one to check out: http://www.slideshare.net/jennifersablelopez/social-medias-influence-on-search-going-beyond-rankings.

Hope this helps,

RE: Why do I not see any data in Open site Explorer for my site www.mtg-sg.com
Hello!
It looks like your site is fairly new, and while most new sites and links will be indexed by our spiders and Open Site Explorer within 60 days, it can sometimes take even longer for many of reasons, including the crawl-ability of sites, the amount of inbound links to them, and the depth of pages in subdirectories.
Just so you know, here's how we compile our index:
- We grab the most recent index.
- We take the top 10 billion URLs with the highest MozRank (with a fixed limit on some of the larger domains).
- We start crawling from the top down until we've crawled 90,000,000,000 pages (which is about 35% the amount in Google's index).Which means, if the site is not linked to by one of these seed URLs (or one of the URLs linked to by them in the next update) then it won't show up in our index. Sorry!
You can get a bit more info about our crawl here: http://moz.com/help/guides/research-tools/open-site-explorer.

RE: Moz Private Message Restriction
I can totally understand that frustration, however It's not about whether you're a Pro Subscriber or not. Our site isn't currently set up to work as Facebook or other sites with on-going private messages unfortunately. The more messages sent, means the higher amount of spam that comes through, which we currently don't have a team to support the influx of spam reports.
-
RE: Moz Private Message Restriction
In addition to what was already noted, we've had issues with people spamming members through private messages.

RE: Moz health check for newbies
Hey Ben! I'd also like to add to what Christy mentioned is that we do have a welcome webinar this Friday at 10am PDT: https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/355765902. It's an hour long, and we'll walk you through Moz Analytics and other tools, and you'll have plenty of time to ask direct questions to the team and such as well.
And welcome!

RE: Oops! This does not appear to be a valid URL. Please try again.
Hello!
Since the avalonu.org redirects to www.avalonu.org you should try adding the final URL in there. See if that works ok for you.
Thanks!

RE: Problem with redirects in coldfusion
Ok, it looks like you've set up your redirects correctly. Let me see if I can get someone who can help figure out what's going on with your crawl report.

RE: Problem with redirects in coldfusion
I just checked your URL and it does show a 301 redirect in my browser, in our Moz toolbar, and with our Moz crawler. Are you possibly looking at an old crawl report?
Thanks!
Jen

RE: Problem with redirects in coldfusion
Hello! Can you give a bit more information about your set up? Coldfusion does have redirect tags you can use, but normally Coldfusion runs on IIS, so you need to set up the redirects there.

We need your expertise! Do you have a tool hack or trick you use with Moz Pro?
Hey friends!
We're looking for any tricks and tips you have for other people using Pro. Everyone has their own way of doing things. We'd love to see if you have any hacks you've created. You can send over just a screenshot, or a blog post, or anything you've got!
Here are a couple examples:
[blog post] Did you know you can use OSE's anchor text export to see if you are getting setup for a penguin penalty? This is a blog post about it: http://moz.com/academy/google-penguin-and-you
[screenshot] Did you know you can get all your keyword ranking historical data by clicking this one little button? http://i.imgur.com/l4KxqBt.jpg
Do you have anything you'd like to add? We're hoping to help spread these to others to help people utilize the tools to their potential.
Thanks!

RE: OG meta image showing something different
Hello!
I just ran the page through the Facebook debugger: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.laserfiche.com%2F which re-caches the page, and it looks like it's pulling the logo fine? It is doing a 302 redirect to the US-EN version of the site that you might want to check into (not sure if it should be a 301 or not?).
If ever you have an issue with Facebook, be sure to run the debugger to get the page re-cached. I find that often helps!
Hope that helped a bit.

RE: Measuring reach and engagement on all social media platforms
Sadly there is not a way to do this in Moz. Your best bet is to do a trial of True Social Metrics, as they have all that info! You can also check out Rival IQ, and see which works best for you. Hope that helps!

RE: Tool for checking open graph

RE: Tool for checking open graph
Hey Michael!
Most of the ones I know of and have used are usually one-off URLs. I was interested in seeing if there was anything out there though, and I did find Sitebeam.net. I just took the free trial and it looks like there is a bulk open graph test in there. It might be worth looking into more!
Hope this helps,

RE: Meta Refresh
Hi Vijay,
You can learn more about the meta refresh here: http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection. Generally it's not good for SEO, as in it doesn't really pass link equity. So, if the crawl test says you don't have any, then that's a good thing.
Hope this helps!

RE: How do you feel when Moz marks one of your questions as "answered?"
Yep! I totally read it. I'd say this part "For us, we find that many people don't come back to mark something as answered, which is why we changed it around a bit. We use the "answered" bit, as a way to see how many questions get asked, replied to, AND "answered." answers that. We want to see how many questions were answered, and the original posters are notorious for NOT marking things as answered. Even after we started emailing them asking them to mark things as answered.
I'm not saying it's perfect, just giving you our thoughts on why we do it. Also, I don't believe anything happens automatically. But Associates and staff are asked to mark a question as answered if they feel they've answered a question. A lot of this comes from the old days of "private questions" where if we didn't mark a question as answered, we could literally spend hours and hours going back and forth with a member.
Hope this helps bring light to why we do things that way. As I mentioned above, we're totally open to changing, and I'm definitely not trying to say our way is best. Just giving insight as to WHY we do it.
Thanks!
-
RE: How do you feel when Moz marks one of your questions as "answered?"
Thanks for this response EGOL, between you and Dana, you've got us all talking. We want to make the right changes for the community, so I always appreciate when these conversations come up. We're going to keep your suggestions in mind as we start to delve into some changes to Q&A.
Also, thanks for all you do!

RE: How do you feel when Moz marks one of your questions as "answered?"
Hi Dana,
Thanks for bringing this up! It's an interesting topic for sure, and actually something we've discussed. For us, we find that many people don't come back to mark something as answered, which is why we changed it around a bit. We use the "answered" bit, as a way to see how many questions get asked, replied to, AND "answered."
I'm not sure I totally agree that by marking something as answered, means that it's shutting down the discussion. In our mind it simply means that the original poster got the answer they needed. It doesn't necessarily mean that the discussion has ended. But this does mean that if it's not clear, we should re-think it.
We'll definitely take this into consideration though in the coming months as we discuss changes/upgrades/etc. to Q&A. I love that people care enough to even bring this stuff up!! We may reach out to you if we come up with some changes/solutions, and get your thoughts. I also like the idea of proposing some ideas here in Q&A for changes to Q&A and see how people respond. This gets me very excited!
Thanks again for bringing this up, and getting this conversation started. I know we'll be talking about it soon because of it!

RE: Why are my Custom Reports not auto emailing?
Hi Thomas,
I'm excited to hear you're diving into the custom reports. The emails will send based on when you set up your report. Did you set it to daily or weekly, and when did you originally set it up? I'm curious if it just hasn't gone out yet.
Thanks!
